And the Tony Award goes to . . . the New York Police Department? Two New York City police precincts will be joining the casts of shows like "American Idiot" and "Lend Me A Tenor" at this year's Tony Awards.

The Midtown North and Midtown South precincts are being awarded the Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre, the committee that administers the awards announced Monday, The Associated Press reports. The awards are in recognition of the precincts' work in the city's theater district, the committee said.

On May 1, police dealt with a potential car bomb that had been parked outside the theater where "The Lion King" plays. In December, a plainclothes police officer killed a suspected scam artist near a landmark Broadway hotel after a gunfight.

"We had decided on this particular Tony Honor well before the May 1 incident in Broadway/Times Square, which brought the NYPD's skills to the forefront of a very public stage," said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League. "So our desire to award them for their consistent day-to-day dedication proved even more appropriate."

The Tony Awards are scheduled for June 13.
