David Arquette apologized Wednesday for his candid comments on Howard Stern's radio show Tuesday, in which he went into graphic detail about his separation from wife Courteney Cox.

"I went on Howard Stern yesterday to provide clarity and honesty about what I'm experiencing," he posted on Twitter, "but while doing that I shared too much . . . it's alright for me to be honest about my own feelings but in retrospect some of the information I provided involved others and for that I am sorry and humbled."

On Stern's show, Arquette, 39, spoke about how long it had been since he and "Cougar Town" star Cox, 46, had been intimate. He talked about his brief affair with a cocktail waitress, following what he described as an understanding that the separated couple were free to see other people. And he said he believed Cox had been involved in an "emotional affair" with her co-star Brian Van Holt.

Stern himself defended Arquette on his show Wednesday, saying, "He was protecting his wife and kid by telling the truth . . . He didn't hide away in his house. He went on a legitimate show and spoke his mind and it was refreshingly honest. Anyone who heard it knew he was being honest."

Adding a twist to events, TMZ.com reported yesterday that Cox and Arquette spoke before he phoned in to the Stern show, and that she was "fine" with what Arquette planned to say.
