Matt LeBlanc says that after his "Friends" spinoff, "Joey," tanked in 2006: "I don't know if burned out is the right word, but I wanted some time off. I have a daughter who's 6 now, and I just wanted to be a dad."
Speaking in Manhattan Tuesday night at a screening for his upcoming Showtime sitcom "Episodes," the actor, 43, insisted: "My favorite thing to do in the world is nothing. I'm great at doing nothing. I love it. It's amazing. But after four, five years off, I felt like I want to go back to work now. I should really rephrase that," he reconsidered. "This came along and made me want to go back to work."
"Episodes" is a half-hour BBC co-production in which LeBlanc plays himself as the star of a British sitcom that becomes horribly mangled in its translation to U.S. TV. The show, scheduled to premiere Jan. 9, was created by "Friends" co-creator David Crane and a former "Mad About You" producer, Jeffrey Klarik.
As for "Joey," "What are you gonna do? It had become really stressful by the end. A part of me was relieved, a part of me was disappointed" when it was canceled, LeBlanc said. "There was a lot of pressure on that show. It was a good experience, though. I learned a lot of things about the business and a lot of things about myself."
