Disney-Marvel's first official trailer for “Captain America: Civil War” puts the emphasis on inter-Avenger strife and a possible showdown between the World War II hero and his modern-day friends.

The trailer depicts Captain America (Chris Evans), as a superhero whose public has turned against him. “You've operated with unlimited power and no supervision,” says William Hurt’s General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. “That is something the world can no longer tolerate.”

It's the kind of backlash that superheroes from Batman to Spider-Man have faced before. In this case, the Captain's loyalites seem torn between his Avengers allies (including Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Anthony Mackie as Falcon) and his old friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), better known as the formidable Winter Soldier.

Robert Downey, Jr.'s Tony Stark is on hand, as usual, to deliver pithy one-liners, including this one to the Captain: “Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth.”

“Captain America: Civil War” touches on many of the topical themes that have appeared in other Marvel movies (and action films in general), including rampant surveillance, government overreach and the moral conundrums presented by war and terrorism. Here, it's the usually slippery Stark who lays down the ethical gauntlet: “If we can't accept limitations, we're no better than the bad guys.”

“Captain America: Civil War,” directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, is due in theaters May 6, 2016.
