Kirk Douglas turns 100: Celebrate with these special screenings

Spartacus is about to have a birthday of Colosseum-sized proportions.

Kirk Douglas, one of the last leading men left from Hollywood’s golden age, turns 100 on Friday, Dec. 9, and celebrations are in the air — and on the air.

On Friday, Movies! (Optimum Ch. 113) will present a pair of films from Douglas’ salad days — the 1948 rom-com “My Dear Secretary” (3:30 p.m. with an encore at 2 a.m. Saturday) and his 1946 screen debut “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” (1 p.m., with an encore at 11:30 p.m.) as Barbara Stanwyck’s weakling husband.

If you want to join other Douglas fans for the occasion, head to Temple Beth El, 660 Park Ave., in Huntington on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. for a screening of Lee Grant’s 2005 documentary “A Father . . . A Son . . . Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” about the actor and his relationship with his son Michael Douglas. Film historian Philip Harwood will also talk about the elder Douglas’ career, and for a $5 admission, you can enjoy birthday refreshments, too.
