The 1954 classic “On the Waterfront” really was a contender at the Academy Awards. Elia Kazan’s seething drama about a longshoreman (Marlon Brando) who turns informant on the dock’s corrupt union bosses racked up eight Oscars, including one for best picture as well as for Brando and co-star Eva Marie Saint, Kazan and longtime Quogue resident Budd Schulberg for his screenplay.

Now the movie is coming back to theaters in Farmingdale and Holtsville Sunday, April 24, and Wednesday, April 27, as part of Turner Classic Movies’ Big Screen Classics series with Fathom Events. Accompanying the movie will be newly filmed commentaries by TCM host Ben Mankiewicz preceding and following the film.

The movie mirrored Kazan’s own troubles when he became a pariah in left-wing circles after giving names of associates involved with the Communist Party when he testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Kazan, however, said he had been planning to make “On the Waterfront” long before his testimony and that the movie was based on actual events that happened to a longshoreman friend of his.

Show times are 2 and 7 p.m. both days and tickets are $13.50. For more information and to make reservations, go to fathomevents.com
