Sunday was Old-Timers Day at the Great South Bay Music Festival, a rocking throwback to the 1960s and ‘70s starring some of the most influential musicians from that era. 
Sunday’s sold-out show — the lineup included former Allman Brothers Band guitar king Dickey Betts, an electrifying Hot Tuna and swamp rock masters Little Feat — also provided an opportunity for music lovers who came of age during the Nixon, Ford and Carter administrations to strut their stuff through Shorefront Park in Patchogue. 
“Anyone here under the age of 60 is probably with their parents,” cracked Pat McHugh, 61, of Huntington. 
During the festival, which was co-sponsored by Newsday, pink-haired Cheryl Schruefer of Hicksville seemed to generate smiles wherever she went as she walked through the park on stilts and a robe that made her look like a 12-foot butterfy. 
“This crowd is amazing,” Schruefer said as she posed for a photo with Theresa Martin of Speonk. “So friendly and so fun. You can tell they are really into the music, it’s a chill crowd that loves to dance, men and women.” 
Stephen Hurtes of Plainview, meanwhile, strolled past vendors selling jewelry and Grateful Dead gear with his friend Gloria Olivera. Hurtes wore a cabana shirt featuring art from the Rolling Stones’ 1978 album “Some Girls.” 
“I love the attention. Everybody stops me to say, ‘I love your shirt.’ It drives her crazy,” Hurtes said, nodding at Olivera, who howled with laughter. 
Jeff Kay of Franklin Square sported a T-shirt that said, “If you don’t know Jorma, you don’t know Jack,” a reference to Hot Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. 
“It’s hard to say how many times I’ve seen Hot Tuna, but I’m a loyal fan. I go all the way back to the Commack Arena. I’ve been seeing Hot Tuna for 40 years,” said the 57-year-old, referring to the now-defunct venue once located on Veterans Highway. 
“I go back to the midnight shows at the Palladium,” he added, referring to the also-defunct Manhattan music hall. “They’d play five, six, seven hours. You’d walk out and the sun would be up.” 
The afternoon started out warm and humid and the skies off Great South Bay were overcast. But a refeshing sea breeze soon blew the clouds away. 
Business at the Wake and Bake booth was brisk, said Carolyn Michelitsch, the owner of the Rocky Point-based bakery, as wisps of marijuana smoke drifted by. 
“I’ve been smelling that all weekend,” she said, laughing. “We have been meeting all their munchies needs.” 
Ellen Pellegrino of Mount Sinai, who hosts a cable TV show that focuses on spirituality called “Age of New Beginnings,” said days filled with music and friends can be an important tool for those seeking deeper lives. 
“It’s all about letting go, about being open to amazement,” Pellegrino said. “It’s about letting go and having fun. What we are meant to do is be happy and this is a happy place.”

The 12th edition of the Great South Bay Music Festival kicked off Thursday with a mix of Long Island’s rich rock history and its near future. 
Those willing to rush between the two stages at Shorefront Park in Patchogue were treated to nearly seven hours of rock that put Long Island on the musical map and up-and-coming bands that will keep it there. 
It centered on the anticipated comeback of Envy on the Coast, who came of age in the heyday of the Long Island music scene of the Aughts. “We’re super-honored to be here with this great lineup,” said Envy singer Ryan Hunter. “I’m very happy to be here.” 
The band’s energetic 40-minute set included songs from last year’s comeback EP “Ritual,” as well as older material, culminating in a scream-along and a bit of a moshpit for “The Gift of Paralysis.” 
Hunter had said before the show how Envy on the Coast has been influenced by bands like Kansas’ The Get Up Kids, who followed them on the main stage. Get Up Kids singer Matt Pryor told the crowd how his band used to play The Dublin Pub and Long Island VFW halls, as he introduced “Shorty,” which showcased the two-singer sound adopted by bands like Taking Back Sunday and Brand New. 
Newcomers Bohemians kicked off the day with songs influenced by the synth pop popularized in the '80s on WLIR, including the new single “Grow.” 
“It feels so good to be part of the Long Island scene this way,” said singer Luke Lotardo of Manorville. 
Long Island pride was also on display from both the bands and the crowd. 
“We’re from Long Island,” said King Neptune singer Ian Kenny, drawing screams from the audience, as the band rolled out its infectious power-pop like “Everyone’s Falling in Love.” Islip’s Staleworth offered some potent Taking Back Sunday-tinged indie rock, while a thunderous set from Thrice and headliners The Front Bottoms showed the latest developments of that style. 
Festival producer Jim Faith said VIP tickets for the Friday and Sunday shows if the four-day festival are sold out, though a limited number of general-admission tickets remain for the rest of the festival. Sublime with Rome headlines the Friday show, with Umphrey’s McGee topping the Saturday slate. The Dickey Betts Band, paying tribute to the late Gregg Allman, will close out the festival on Sunday.

Dickey Betts, founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, will close out the Great South Bay Music Festival with a set that will include a tribute to the late Gregg Allman.
Betts’ Great South Bay appearance on July 15 at Shorefront Park in Patchogue will be his only festival show this year, aside from The Peach Music Festival in Scranton, Pennsylvania, started by The Allman Brothers Band. It is part of the guitarist’s comeback this year, following his retirement from touring in 2015.
“Everywhere I go fans keep saying they want me to get out and play again,” Betts told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in December. “I think the time is right.”
The Front Bottoms, Sublime With Rome and Umphrey’s McGee are also set to headline the four-day festival, with acts ranging from Long Island’s reunited Envy on the Coast to classic rockers Little Feat also on the bill.

Sublime With Rome, Umphrey’s McGee, Little Feat and Long Island’s reunited Envy on the Coast will headline The Great South Bay Music Festival at Patchogue’s Shorefront Park from July 12 through 15.
Long Island’s largest music festival is also planning some changes for its 12th year, including a stage dedicated to tribute bands, though its overall structure will remain intact.
The Thursday, July 12, show will focus on indie rock, with The Front Bottoms and Envy on the Coast set to headline a hard-hitting slate of bands that also includes Thrice and The Get Up Kids.
Sublime With Rome, the Dirty Heads and Less Than Jake will headline the Friday, July 13, slate, which features 14 acts on three stages, including a night of prog rock tribute bands Us &amp; Floyd, Yes tribute Awaken and Genesis tribute Rael.
As always, Saturday (July 14) remains Jam Rock Day, with Umphrey’s McGee headlining, alongside Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Papadosio, with a day of tributes that includes Albums We Love performing Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” in its entirety, The “The Band” Band and the Grateful Dead tribute band Reckoning.
Sunday, July 15, remains a classic rock day, featuring headliners Little Feat, and for their fourth time, Electric Hot Tuna, leading the day of 19 artists. The Imagination Movers will also return for the Sunday Morning Kids Concert.

The music was hot, the beer cold, and the crowd cool as the Great South Bay Music Festival wrapped up Sunday at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.
The lineup for the fourth day of the festival included classic rock acts from the 1960s and ’70s — Jesse Colin Young, Dave Mason, Poco, Eddie Money, the Zombies — and the live and let live spirit of those times.
“I’m here for the music, music, music,” said Robert Shainwald, 70, of Ridge, who was wearing a T-shirt that said “Dirty Hippie Anarchist.” “Good vibes, good scene.”
The first two days of the festival were dampened by rain, but Sunday’s weather reminded the thousands of music fans who came out why they live and play on Long Island. Boats bobbed on the bay, and a steady breeze from the water helped keep festivalgoers cool on a sunny day.
“It’s a beautiful day to be here,” said Jocelyn LaRocca, 39, of East Williston, who came to the festival with her husband, Anthony, 43, and their 2-year-old daughter, Athena. “I love live music.”
Karen Plaveck, 56, of Milford, Connecticut, also turned the festival into a family outing. She came with her daughter Sarah Plaveck, 32, of Yaphank.
“I’m excited to see Dave Mason,” Karen said. “I’ve seen him a few times and he has always been great.”
Dozens of vendors sold everything from hamburgers and turkey legs to Tibetan prayer flags and Grateful Dead T-shirts. Colin Salmaggi, 31, of East Moriches, said business was brisk at his Long Island Woodwork booth, where he was selling LI-themed art.
“We’ve been here for four years now and we are beginning to get a following,” he said. “People come every year to get a new piece for their wall.”
Brian Gonzalez of Long Island Glass, had a big crowd surrounding his booth, which offered pipes, jewelry, fleece blankets and other items.
“This weekend had been amazing, even with the bad weather the first two days,” said Gonzalez, 45, of Selden.
“This is our 11th year here and I’ve seen it grow. The set up is smooth and the security is great. The security stays in the background, so do the police. It’s like they come out just enough to let you know that they are there.
“To have all these people here with alcohol, and not have any problems is great,” he added. “It’s a well-behaved crowd.”
Attendance figures were not immediately available Sunday night.
George Overin and his son, Daniel, 31, were dressed in historic garb as they manned the booth for Ye Pyrate Brotherhood, an organization dedicated to preserving pirate life.
“Pirates were involved in the history of this country,” said Overin, 62.
Haley Gibbons, 20, of Bellport came to the festival to see her sister Shannon perform with her band, The Om-en, on the Jambalaya stage. She admitted she didn’t know much about Mason, Poco and the other acts on the main stage.
“But my grandma was excited to see Eddie Money,” Gibbons said.

After two days of rain, the sun came out for Day 3 of the Great South Bay Music Festival at Shorefront Park in Patchogue on Saturday.
“I’m a big festival fan,” says Scott Porciello, 61, of Stony Brook, who attended with his wife, Amy. “This is a summer tradition for us. We were supposed to go on vacation but we don’t leave until we come here first.”
Opening the Main Coors Light Stage was Patchogue’s own Soundswell, which blends surf rock with R&amp;B soul and features the Swinson sisters on vocals.
“We’ve got that sibling harmony going on,” says Sydney Swinson, 22.
Corey Swinson, 25, adds, “It’s surreal to have a festival like this with national acts in our hometown.”
Heather Mahlstedt, 41, of Farmingville brought her twin 4-year-olds Autumn and Greyson specifically to see Soundswell. 
“We love their vibe,” she says. “Their favorite song is ‘Spider Monkey.’ We hope they play it!”
Though rain doused the first two days of the festival, featuring Taking Back Sunday on Thursday and 311 on Friday, organizers say the festival is a success.
“We were sold out,” says event founder and producer Jim Faith with a smile. “Not one person left. People were loving it. If anything, the rain added to the festivities.”
Over at the Clamshell Bandshell stage, Lennon Ashton, 18, of Plainview and Katie Zimmer, 18, of Commack were busy keeping classic rock alive — acoustically. The duo jammed on covers of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and “The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin plus a few originals like “On My Way.”
“We grew up listening to the Beatles, Rush and Yes,” says Ashton, who was named after the late Beatle John Lennon. “We want to bring it back.”
One popular treat this year at the festival is rolled ice cream from Bar A Dessert, which is set to open in Patchogue in mid-August. The frozen sweet is made with fresh ingredients in front of the patron on cold slabs set at minus 23 degrees (Matcha Green has green tea, mint, blueberry and coconut flakes).
“I got the idea from Thailand,” says owner Junggle Fu. “The taste is smooth, not icy because we use pure cream.”
Adam Maxwell, 42, of Wading River bathed himself in sunscreen with son Jeremy, 19, by his side as the father and son team settled in for a daylong concert.
“For me it’s all about the music,” says Maxwell. “I’m mainly here to see Gov’t Mule but the weather is great, so why not hang out?”
The festival continues Sunday with Dave Mason, Poco, the Zombies and Long Island’s own Eddie Money.

Soaking downpours and muddy mosh pits couldn’t sink spirits at the opening night of the Great South Bay Music Festival in Patchogue as Taking Back Sunday led a powerful slate of rock bands at Shorefront Park Thursday night. 
“There’s something about being back on Long Island,” singer Adam Lazzara said, drawing a roar from the crowd, as the band took a rare break from its hard-hitting set. 
“We’re the luckiest men you’re ever going to meet,” added Lazzara, who revealed the band had been practicing for its upcoming national tour in Lindenhurst this week. 
The last time the Long Beach-based band played Great South Bay, in 2014, it ushered in the festival’s expansion to four days. This year, it kicks off Long Island’s biggest music festival ahead of headliners 311 on Friday, Gov’t Mule on Saturday and Eddie Money and the Zombies on Sunday.
Lazzara talked about looking to visit the American Waffle House in Massapequa where he used to work and finding that it had become a bank. And that’s not the only thing that has changed since Taking Back Sunday has grown from playing VFW halls and basements around Amityville into an international headliner. 
During their hourlong set, Taking Back Sunday mixed songs from last year’s standout “Tidal Wave” album, including the rousing “Call Come Running,” with classics like “A Decade Under the Influence” and songs from their breakthrough “Tell All Your Friends” album. However, the focus was on strong newer material like the thunderous “Death Wolf” and the catchy pop punk of “Stood a Chance.”
Few things got a louder response, though, than when Lazzara declared, “We’re Taking Back Sunday and we’re from right here.”
Thursday’s lineup on the main stage was packed with acts that came through the Long Island scene that spawned Taking Back Sunday in the early 2000s, including New Found Glory, Saves the Day and Frank Iero’s (formerly of My Chemical Romance) new band Frank Iero and the Patience.
New Found Glory singer Jordan Pundik had the capacity crowd jumping around in the rain to hits including “All Downhill From Here” and songs from their catchy new album “Makes Me Sick.”
Saves the Day singer Chris Conley was so pleased by the crowd reaction that he got down on one knee and proposed marriage as well as leading several singalongs, including one for “At Your Funeral.”
Some new Long Island scene bands tried to keep that feeling alive, as they made great impressions themselves. Manorville’s Bohemians kicked off the day with their charming ’80s-influenced dance rock. And King Neptune urged the crowd to embrace the downpour, as they played their irresistible party music. “Let’s just all get wet,” suggested singer Ian Kenny when the rains returned, though at that point there was little choice.

Taking Back Sunday singer Adam Lazzara says the band didn’t know what the Great South Bay Music Festival was all about when they first headlined it in 2014.
“We didn’t know what to expect,” said Lazzara, calling from his North Carolina home. “B.B. King was headlining a couple days after us. But when we got there, it was a fun time.”
It was so much fun that the Long Beach-based rockers jumped at the chance to headline the opening night of the festival again this year, on July 13, their final show before heading out on a summer tour that includes shows at Webster Hall on July 14 and July 15.
“The lineup should be awesome,” Lazzara says. “It’s our friends like Saves the Day and New Found Glory. It will be great to see them again.”
Jim Faith, the festival’s co-founder and producer, says that seeing headliners return validates what the Patchogue festival has been doing for the past 11 years, growing into Long Island’s largest music event. That validation also comes when outsiders like Canadian travel agency Flight Network recently named the Great South Bay fest one of the most exciting music festivals in the world this year.
“We’re just growing in an organic way,” said Faith, adding that ticket sales this year are stronger than ever for a slate that also includes Gov’t Mule headlining July 15 and The Zombies and Plainedge native Eddie Money closing out July 16. “We’re more of a community roots festival. We just try to lay some new music on people.”
Nick Hexum, singer of July 14’s headliners 311, says the band didn’t know what to expect when it first headlined the festival in 2015, especially when the band was driving around Patchogue trying to get to Shorefront Park.
“We thought, ‘What an unusual setting!’ ” Hexum said. “It turned out to be an awesome party, though. There was all this new energy in this big, open place and we had a great, rowdy, boisterous crowd. We’re excited to be back out there.”
Lazzara says Taking Back Sunday is excited to be back on tour again this summer after a few months of weekend festival shows. “We’re always tinkering with things,” said Lazzara, adding that the band will start working on the follow-up to last year’s “Tidal Wave” when this tour is done. “We’re still working out what songs we want to learn. This tour will be a mix of ‘Tidal Wave’ stuff and older stuff. We’re going to switch things up.”

The rockers are set to launch their “Come What May” tour in May, to support their upcoming 10th studio album. But the headlining slot of Long Island’s biggest music festival on July 15 is part of the band’s always-busy summer festival schedule.
G. Love &amp; Special Sauce and Rusted Root are also on the bill, which will feature at least 17 bands on three stages throughout the day.
