The Replacements' 'Songs for Slim': Benefit EP for guitarist Slim Dunlap

The Replacements are pulling for one of their own.

Dunlap, who replaced the band's original guitarist, the late Bob Stinson, in 1987, has been partially paralyzed since a massive right-brain stroke last February. "Insurance does not pay for long-term care, and the general prognosis for Dunlap is that he will likely need around-the- clock care for the rest of his life," according to a statement from New West Records.

The five-song covers EP includes Westerberg- sung versions of Dunlap's "Busted Up," Gordon Lightfoot's "I'm Not Sayin' " and Sondheim's "Everything's Coming Up Roses." Mars recorded a version of another Dunlap tune, "Radio Hook Word Hit."

The EP will be available digitally on March 5 and in 12-inch form from New West in April. "Songs for Slim" kicks off a series of 7-inch vinyl releases that will be auctioned -- as "Slim" was last month -- and sold to raise funds for the ailing guitarist. Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Jakob Dylan are to take part in those.
