In another stark demonstration of that new media adage "think before you tweet," CNN's Global Affairs correspondent Elise Labott has been suspended for two weeks over a tweet criticizing the House vote on limiting Syrian refugees into the country.

"House passes bill that could limit Syrian refugees. Statue of Liberty bows head in anguish," she posted Thursday at 11:32 a.m.

The tweet subsequently got thousands of likes and retweets -- an unusual volume -- but also got the attention of influential Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple, who wondered -- not without bite -- that "she's CNN’s global affairs correspondent and not a commentator, meaning that she’s bound to comply with the CNN neutrality principle/sham."

CNN late Thursday told told him she had been suspended for two weeks.

Labott -- a well-traveled and highly regarded reporter for CNN -- later apologized for editorializing in the tweet. A suspension like this, for a ranking network correspondent, is unusual. Keith Olbermann earned one in February when he was at ESPN, after fulminating via Twitter against Penn State students, notably over their use of grammar and other matters (he has been a long-standing critic of the college's athletic programs). But Olbermann is a professional fulminator and critic; that was hardly out of character.

CNN declined to comment Friday.
