Three weeks after Comedy Central was dragged into a running battle with the creators of "South Park" after blacking out depictions of Muhammad in the series' 200th episode, the network was back in the soup again Thursday. It announced that Jesus Christ is the subject of one of its new shows the network has in development.
The show, entitled "JC," was described as a half-hour animated show about Jesus Christ - who moves to New York to get out from under "his father's enormous shadow." Father? He's described as someone who's "all-powerful yet apathetic" and "would rather be playing video games" than listening to his son. The description concluded, " is a playful take on religion and society with a sprinkle of dumb."
The Catholic League immediately attacked the proposed show, saying in a statement by its president, Bill Donohue, "These are the same executives who delight in bashing Christians while continuing to censor any depiction of Muhammad on 'South Park' [but] . . . Muslims may not be too pleased to learn that one of their revered figures is going to be ridiculed on Comedy Central."
The network declined to comment. A company executive said, "We announced 22 projects and if three made it to air, that'd be a lot." The exec characterized the likelihood of "JC" being picked up as a series as "slim."
