Hey, if Charlie Sheen could do it, why not "Law & Order" - a consideraly greater cultural treasure by an order of magntiude of a million.

If Charlie can declare it's over, and then come back - again! - then why can't "Law & Order" stick around too?

In other words, don't strike those sets on the Chelsea piers just yet.

There's been plenty of Internet speculation - which, as you know, is not always the most reliable sort of speculation - that "Law & Order" could get a TNT pickup, and that Dick Wolf is still pressuring his partners at NBCUniversal to figure out a way to make an "L&O" 21st season happen, which would give Wolf his record of longest-running primetime drama.

My question is: Why TNT? Why not USA? That would seem to make more sense for the obvious reason of corporate ownership.

The beauty of heading to cable also would give, it seems to me, "L&O" a future even beyond the 21st season; if the economics can be worked out, and the numbers add up, it could go on and on - much as it has all these years.

Here's my earnest and sincere wish for this morning, May 18, 2010: Let's hope a deal happens. It'd be great for cable, great for viewers, great for fans, great for Chelsea piers, great for Wolf, great for New York actors, and - maybe most important - great for New York. This has been an institution for two decades, and still has plenty of life, plenty of fan support.
