These are the replies from some districts to the Newsday questionnaire regarding the use of new technologies in their classrooms.

Some of the answers are elaborate, and have not been edited or reduced. Some districts did not answer the questions directly.

The Copiague Public School District is committed to providing state of the art technology and access to all students from grades k-12. The district refreshes all technology on a 4 year cycle and has high speed wireless Internet and network connectivity in every classroom. Over the last 3 years the district has put the following educational technology programs in place: Classroom SmartBoards for interactive, student centered instruction Podcasting allows students to create video and audio projects to reach audiences beyond their classrooms. Copiague has just introduced IPod carts for use in ESL classrooms and teachers have developed materials for student use.

Laptop labs for every grade level and subject area to provide computer lab access within each classroom Robotics instruction at the secondary level Over 1400 technology training sessions conducted in 2009 On-line Credit Recovery Classroom eBoards - these webpages provide opportunities for anytime, anywhere learning and sharing On-line video libraries Video Conferences - Copiague Schools have consistently conducted the most videoconferences in Western Suffolk. Students ³travel² to museums, zoos, and a variety of cultural and educational institutions Age and subject appropriate software tools (i.e. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Office, Finale) The ability to search all building library holdings from every classroom Graphic and web design courses Student Response Systems (clickers) allow students respond to participate interactively for every question BrainPop.

This web-based resource is used to introduce and reinforce subject matter in the 4 core subject areas Digital video and photography offerings Document cameras allow for the projection of enlarged images of print media, chemistry experiments, dissections and more Access on every computer and to every resident to the Grolier suite of on-line references Scholastic Keys - This product allows elementary students to use the Microsoft Office suite with a child friendly interface Graphic organizers (Inspiration and Kidspiration) to help students develop writing skills Physical Education digital tools including FitnessGram and DanceRevolution, a digital fitness device that responds to student movement On-line repair requests for any teacher in need of technical training or support In-house media streaming server for web-broadcasts including news stories and high school graduation ceremonies Re-designed website with user customizable calendars Future plans: Expansion of podcasting and multimedia production opportunities for students Development of a video production program in conjunction with News 12 Mounting of SmartBoards and projectors in all classrooms over the next two years (currently, 1/3rd of classrooms have mounted SmartBoards).

Pilot the use of mobile computing devices including IPads for classroom instruction.
