These are the replies from some districts to the Newsday questionnaire regarding the use of new technologies in their classrooms.

Some of the answers are elaborate, and have not been edited or reduced. Some districts did not answer the questions directly.

1. Please list any major technological innovations introduced in the classroom in the past three years. Please give the name and list the use for each item.

Some of the major technological innovations introduced in the Southampton classroom have been SMARTBoards, document viewers, and student response systems. We also use digital video cameras, YSI Science Probes, and laptop carts.

SMARTBoard - Interactive white board with software built-in so teachers can make interactive engaging lessons.

Smart Document viewers - minimally allows users to capture documents digitally. Allows much more, can attach to microscope to project on screen, as well as projects anything you put under it.

Student Response Systems - allows teachers to easily poll/assess students to check for understanding.

Digital video cameras- used for multimedia projects in the classroom.

YSI Probes - used in the field for water samples in HS science class.

Laptops/computers: project based learning, collaborating, software, and web 2.0 tools

Wireless access in two of our three building.

Skype - Video conferencing to communicate globally with other students.

2. Please tell us of any major innovations you are planning to introduce within the next year.

Using iPads as an assistive technology tool for students with learning disabilities.

Complete wireless project at the Elementary school

3. Are teachers or students using cellphones in the district for instructional purposes?

Not at this point, although we are exploring it. Biggest issue is not all students have one. We provide our classrooms with student response systems and computers.
