Listeria in Made Fresh, LoBoy macaroni, tuna salad, spurs recall by Bay Shore company, state says

A Bay Shore company is recalling two food items after listeria was found in its macaroni salad and tuna salad, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets said.

Made Fresh Salads, Inc. located at 1249 St. Louis Ave, said it is recalling its 5 lb. containers & 30 lb. containers of "Macaroni Salad" and 5 lb. containers of "Tuna Deluxe Salad" because of the presence of listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, a statement said.

While healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The "Macaroni Salad" & "Tuna Deluxe Salad" were distributed statewide in retail stores. The recall applies to all lots and codes of LoBoy brand Macaroni Salad, LoBoy brand Tuna Deluxe Salad, Made Fresh Salad brand Macaroni Salad, and Made Fresh Salad brand Tuna Deluxe Salad.

Made Fresh Salads, Inc. said they urge consumers who have purchased "Macaroni Salad" and "Tuna Deluxe Salad" to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-765-0082.

The recall comes after six people died from a nationwide listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to premade pasta meals. One person who became ill was pregnant and it resulted in the death of a fetus, The Associated Press reported.
