2 more nabbed on LI in wrong-way incidents
Two more motorists were arrested on charges of driving the wrong way drunk on Long Island roads over the weekend, marking at least the 13th and 14th such arrests in the past seven weeks.
The first incident happened Saturday, when, according to the Suffolk sheriff's office, William Selby of Mastic was spotted by authorities near Exit 57 of the Sunrise Highway going west in the eastbound lanes at about 5:35 p.m. That portion of Sunrise was closed due to a propane gas leak investigation in the area, authorities said.
Sheriff's office Chief of Staff Michael Sharkey said Selby, 62, narrowly missed striking a patrol car with his Toyota, then tried to get away via the road median but got stuck in the snow. Sharkey said Selby then jumped out of his car and tried to flee. Once in custody, Sharkey said, Selby kicked out the window of a sheriff's vehicle.
Sharkey said Selby faces charges including driving while intoxicated with drugs and alcohol, reckless driving and unlawfully fleeing an officer. Arraignment information was not immediately available.
At about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Suffolk Police Officer Artie Hull spotted James Hanley, 19, of Brentwood, drive a 2003 Hyundai through a red light on Wheeler Road in Central Islip and head north in the southbound lane, authorities said.
Hull tried to stop Hanley, authorities said, and Hanley pulled to the side of the road before taking off again. Hull then pulled the Hyundai over again on Church Street, authorities said, where Hanley refused to leave the vehicle. Authorities said they charged Hanley with driving while intoxicated, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, reckless driving and resisting arrest. Arraignment information was not immediately available.
The first of the recent spate of wrong-way arrests dates to Nov. 15, when off-duty New York City police officer Andre Menzies of North Babylon was killed in a head-on collision by an accused wrong-way driver on the Northern State Parkway in Dix Hills.
