Blood drive in Commack honors fallen Suffolk police officer

The Suffolk County Police Department and the Commack Fire Department host their annual blood drive Saturday in honor of a Suffolk County police officer who died in the line of duty.
The blood drive will be held at the Commack Fire Department at 6309 Jericho Tpke., Commack, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event has been held every year since Officer Glen Ciano was killed by a drunken driver on Feb. 22, 2009, and more than 220 donations were made last year, officials said.
Police, fire and other officials were scheduled to hold a news conference Friday to publicize the blood drive.
“This year’s blood drive is especially timely because there is a shortage of blood donations due to the aggressive flu epidemic,” the police department said in a news release.
