Enrollment on NY health insurance exchange tops 865,000

Close to 39,000 New Yorkers enrolled for health insurance on the state's health insurance exchange on Monday, bringing the total to more than 865,000, state Department of Health officials said Tuesday.
Monday was the last day to sign up with the NY State of Health for coverage this year to avoid a federal tax penalty. The state extended enrollment to April 15 for those who were unable to do so because of identity issues, technological problems or customer service delays.
Nearly 134,000 people have signed up over the past week.
"These gains represent the highest volume of enrollments since the launch of NY State of Health" on Oct. 1, state officials said in a statement. Throughout March, enrollment numbers stayed high, with 9,000 to 11,000 people signing up daily, according to the health department.
"Year One on the marketplace has been a great success, and we're thrilled that more than 865,000 New Yorkers have enrolled in quality, low-cost insurance," said Donna Frescatore, executive director of NY State of Health.
Of the total enrollment of 865,487, Medicaid represented 453,386 and private insurance the rest. More than 70 percent of enrollees were previously uninsured, state officials said.
The agency said it is "on track to meet or exceed" its enrollment goal of 1.1 million by the end of 2016.
