Shopping cart accidents are a major cause of injuries among young children.

The University of Michigan Medical System offers suggestions to help prevent these injuries:

  • Only allow children to ride in the seat, buckled in. Children should not ride elsewhere in the cart.
  • Never allow an infant to be strapped into a car seat on top of a shopping cart.
  • Placing a child seat on top of a shopping cart increases the risk of tipping.
  • Instead of using a shopping cart, carry an infant in a baby sling or carrier, or shop with baby in a stroller.
