Mosquito spraying in Suffolk salt marshes Tuesday, health officials say

Parts of some Suffolk County salt marshes will be treated with pesticide Tuesday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., with an eye toward controlling mosquito larvae, the county health department said.

Precautions are not recommended, health officials said, as "the helicopter will be flying at a very low level over marsh areas and taking other precautions to control drift into inhabited areas."

The pesticides being used -- Vectobac 12AS and Altosid liquid concentrate -- "have no significant human toxicity," officials said.

The marshes are located in ponds, preserves, golf courses, beaches, creeks and other places in the towns of Brookhaven, Babylon, Smithtown, Riverhead, East Hampton, Southampton and Islip. To learn more see: http://www.suffolkcountyny.gov/departments/healthservices.aspx
