Suffolk to conduct aerial spraying for mosquitoes on salt marshes, Fire Island

Suffolk officials will conduct aerial spraying of streets in Point O'Woods and Davis Park on Fire Island, and on salt marshes in seven towns in the county on Tuesday to reduce the volume of mosquitoes, health officials said in a news release.

The Department of Health Services announced that the Suffolk Department of Public Works is set to treat the Fire Island communities from 6 to 10 p.m., targeting adult mosquitoes.

Salt marshes in the towns of Babylon, Brookhaven, Islip, Southold, East Hampton, Riverhead and Smithtown are also scheduled to be sprayed to control mosquito larvae.

The marshes will be sprayed from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Officials said that they expect little to no human exposure to the spraying in the salt marshes. They recommend people in the Fire Island communities close windows and stay inside until about 30 minutes after spraying, particularly children and pregnant women.
