Huntington’s first spray park, which will be named for slain NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, is expected to open in the summer of 2018.
The town board approved appropriating $380,000 for the development of the water facility at Elwood Park on Thursday. 
Tuozzolo, a father of two, was shot and killed in November 2016 while responding to a 911 call in the Bronx. He and his wife, Lisa, had lived in Greenlawn for about nine years, close to where the spray park will be built.
“It was an honor to work with Sgt. Tuozzolo’s family to create our first Huntington spray park,” said town board member Tracey Edwards, who sponsored the resolution. “This will allow Sgt. Tuozzolo’s legacy to live on.”
The total cost of the park is not to exceed $380,000, and the money will come from three sources: $200,000 from the town Environmental Open Space and Park Fund Review Advisory Committee Park Improvement Fund; $128,000 from the Neighborhood Parks Fund; and $52,000 from a park improvement payment for community benefit from The Engel Burman Group, the Garden City-based developer of The Seasons at Elwood age-restricted condos on Elwood Road.
The appropriations were approved in a 5-0 vote at the town board’s Thursday meeting.
The 2,500-square-foot park will have 1,600 square feet of active play features. The park will likely be similar to the water park at Smithtown’s Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve, town officials said.
The area also will have a shade structure, six park benches, a 4-foot vinyl-coated chain-link fence and a memorial trellis with the name of the spray park.
Town officials said construction should begin in the spring, and the park should be open by July 1. 
“I’m very excited about this,” Town Supervisor Frank Petrone said. “We worked very closely with the family and the developer. It’s the perfect spot for a spray park and memorial for the officer.”
Petrone said the town also plans to build a second spray park at Manor Field in Huntington Station by the James D. Conte Center on Fifth Street.
“I’m hoping the one at Manor Field opens this summer as well,” Petrone said.

The widow of the NYPD sergeant from Long Island who was slain in the Bronx a year ago Saturday said she has spent the past 365 days struggling to be a mom and dad to her young sons. 
Lisa Tuozzolo of Greenlawn, addressing a memorial plaque unveiling for her husband, Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, outside his base, the 43rd Precinct, likened her family’s heartbreak to a vase shattered to pieces. 
“Every day since November 4, I continue to learn how to be both a mom and a dad to two young boys. Every day I continue to navigate an unwanted reality where I’m responsible for ensuring my boys have everything they need and to ensure that they grow up to be kind, caring, loving and respectful human beings,” she said Saturday in remarks that drew a standing ovation. 
Gone are the days when the boys, now 4 and 5, would wake up the couple to watch cartoons, eat breakfast in bed, enjoy Super Bowl parties with chicken wings and would guess “how many bad guys Daddy caught that day.”
“At night when I put the boys to bed, and I’m left all alone without my husband by my side, or my best friend to go over my day with — that’s when it’s the hardest,” she said. 
Standing before the widow were officers who have become close to the family, some in memorial T-shirts, others wearing Patches4Paul — a memorial cloth she designed with Paul Tuozzolo’s fellow sergeant and work partner, Manny Kwo, who was shot in the leg during the Nov. 4, 2016, confrontation.
Tuozzolo, 41, died after being shot by Manuel Rosales, 35, of Brentwood, while Tuozzolo was responding to a 911 call about a disturbance at the home of the gunman’s estranged wife. Rosales was shot and killed by the police.
On Saturday, hundreds of police officers, along with politicians such as Mayor Bill de Blasio, recalled Tuozzolo, a man who loved kids, his job and family. De Blasio said the city wouldn’t forget Tuozzolo. 
“We will be there,” de Blasio said, as the boys, Joseph, 4, and Austin, 5, sat nearby, one in a Spider-Man top. “Everyone of us will be there for Lisa and her wonderful children.”

The little boys of a slain NYPD officer from Greenlawn held onto their mom Wednesday as she implored the people of the Bronx neighborhoods he patrolled to remember him always.
Speaking at a street-naming ceremony for her husband, Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, widow Lisa Tuozzolo said her husband loved his 19 years on the force, and always made his family and fellow officers feel safe. 
“Paul loved serving this community. He was a kind, gentle soul, and nothing could rattle him,” she said. “In the most challenging of situations, Paul’s favorite thing to say was, ‘easy peasy’ or, ‘I’ve got this.’ ”
She added: “He couldn’t wait to come home to the loves of his life, Austin and Joseph, and nothing made him happier than hearing his boys run to him once he opened the garage door at the end of the work day.”
Purdy Street at St. Raymond Avenue is now also named in honor of “Sergeant Paul J. Tuozzolo.” His sons helped pull a rope unveiling the sign. 
Wednesday morning’s ceremony took place over the distant squeals of schoolchildren playing at nearby schools — making the Parkchester intersection a fitting tribute to Tuozzolo, who relished being a role model for his boys and others’, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
The naming is temporary; for the honor to be permanent, the City Council must pass special legislation, a biannual process next set for December for all such honors citywide.
De Blasio called Tuozzolo, killed on Nov. 4, 2016, “a leader who put his fellow officers first and a family man.”
Tuozzolo, 41, died after being shot by Manuel Rosales, 35, of Brentwood, while answering a 911 call reporting a disturbance at the home of the gunman’s estranged wife. Rosales was in turn shot and killed by the police.
The shooting left Tuozzolo’s sons, Joseph, 4, and Austin, 5, fatherless.

The 5-year-old son of slain NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo on Tuesday accepted the police department’s highest honor on behalf of his dad, a Greenlawn resident killed in the line of duty last year while protecting a young Bronx family from their armed, estranged father. 
As Tuozzolo’s own family looked on, he was remembered as someone who embodied the best of those who put their life on the line every day.
Tuozzolo “responded not just as a police officer, but responded as a father when he understood that a family was in danger, that they were being held at gunpoint, a mother and child literally on the brink of such danger,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio, who placed the medal, bearing 12 white stars on a green ribbon, around the neck of the late officer’s older son, Austin.
“They love coming to see how daddy is honored and they understand that daddy was a hero,” said the sergeant’s wife, Lisa Tuozzolo, in an interview after the ceremony at police headquarters in Manhattan. “They don’t know the specifics, but they know that daddy was a hero. And he’ll always be a hero in their eyes.”
Tuozzolo, who was 41 and served in the NYPD for 19 years, died in November after, police said, he was shot in the confrontation in the Bronx.
On Tuesday, Austin was accompanied by his mother and younger brother, Joseph, 4 — the boys both clad in blue polo shirts — and other family members, including the sergeant’s parents, Denise and Peter, and his brothers, Michael and Peter.
Lisa Tuozzolo, who cried at times during the event and hugged her sons, said she was proud of her husband’s actions that day. She called him “humble and so reserved and so not about the accolades.”
“It’s bittersweet because he wouldn’t be here if my husband didn’t love what he did for the city and for the department, and go 100 percent toward protecting the community that he worked in,” she said. “I know he’s looking down on us and he’s proud. But I want him back.”
NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill also spoke at the ceremony, in which he said the department recognizes officers for bravery and heroism in situations that “would have made most people run the other way.”
Tuozzolo answered a 911 call from a friend of the estranged wife of the gunman, Manuel Rosales, 35, of Brentwood, who said he had broken into her Beach Avenue home in the Van Nest section of the Bronx, where she lived with the couple’s 3-year-old son, police said. 
Rosales fled in his red Jeep and Tuozzolo spotted the vehicle about a half-mile away at Bronx River and Noble avenues near Noble Playground, police said.
Tuozzolo warned his fellow officers — Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, Officer Arvid Flores and probationary Officer Elwin Martinez, a recruit just days into field training — shouting repeatedly, “Gun!” 
Rosales opened fire, striking Tuozzolo in the head and torso. He died at the hospital. Kwo was hit in the legs several times, but survived. Martinez returned fire and fatally shot Rosales, police said.
Lisa Tuozzolo said her husband’s actions that day reflected his affection for his job and colleagues.
“I would expect nothing less from him,” she said. “That was his demeanor toward his co-workers — he put them first, he protected them, he fought for them, he defended them. He made sure his squad was so well cared for so they could do their job. And they knew he had their back 110 percent. . . . I think his actions of that day proved that.”

This was not about a baseball game — it was so much bigger than that. This was about two communities that came together through love for family to celebrate the life of a fallen police officer at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip on Monday.
More than a thousand people were on hand to honor Sergeant Paul Tuozzolo, who worked in the 43rd Precinct of the South Bronx and was killed in the line of duty on Nov. 4, 2016. 
The neighboring towns of North Babylon and West Islip recognized Sgt. Tuozzolo and his commitment to family and community through his 19 years of police work. His wife of five years, Lisa Martinolich-Tuozzolo, wearing a Tuozzolo jersey with his badge number 870 across the back, and their two young sons Austin, 5, and Joseph, 4, enjoyed the game.
“I’m honored for Paul that people care and I don’t want anyone to forget what he sacrificed,” Martinolich-Tuozzolo said. “He bled blue and loved his job. He went to work every day to protect people. His guys would do anything for him because he was a true leader. I’m thrilled at how the communities came together for this.”
The boys, along with their mother, threw out the first pitches. Martinolich-Tuozzolo accepted an authenticated American flag that was flown by the Port Authority of NY-NJ over the One World Trade Center. The flag was delivered by Dan Rhein, an 18-year veteran of the Port Authority, and a 1993 graduate of North Babylon High School.
Rhein, who graduated with Lisa, said, “I wanted to reach out and do something special for the family. It’s an honor to be in the brotherhood. I could forget about ninety-nine percent of the people in high school but she was one worth remembering. Her husband saved his partner’s life and his death was senseless.”
North Babylon won, 5-4, on a walk-off, infield single by Nick Elliot that scored Nick Burke in the eighth inning. North Babylon’s Paul Tchinnis had a pair of two-run singles.
 Both schools wore commemorative uniforms and all the proceeds from the game and fundraising events will go toward memorial scholarships for both schools in Sgt. Tuozzolo’s name.
“I have two digital memory boxes, one for each of our sons,” Martinolich-Tuozzolo said. “It’s so important that I remind my kids every day about who their Dad was and that he served the community to make a better world.”
North Babylon baseball coach Steve Corrado said, “Lisa connects the districts. She was a grad of North Babylon and now the assistant principal at West Islip High School. She’s as good a person as I’ll ever know. Her loss was our loss and it was overwhelming.”
Corrado contacted West Islip coach Shawn Rush and the two agreed to play a Suffolk League IV game at the home of the Long Island Ducks.
“We saw two big South Shore school districts come together like family to support one of their own,” said Glen Eschbach, the superintendent of North Babylon schools. “The message was clear. You’re a member of the North Babylon community forever, no matter where you go. It’s an awful tragedy and heartbreaking but the family knows they have a large support system.”

Lisa Tuozzolo, the wife of an NYPD sergeant from Long Island killed in a Bronx shooting last month, never leaves home without a pack of tissues in her purse. 
She said she keeps them close to wipe away tears when the grief of losing her husband, Paul Tuozzolo, overwhelms her.
“It’s too soon. It’s too fresh. It’s too raw. It’s too hard to think about,” Tuozzolo said during an interview.
Tuozzolo said her pain is compounded by the holiday season, when every twinkling light and holiday window serves as a heartbreaking reminder of her loss: a devoted husband and father who dedicated himself to helping those in need.
“I want to close myself up in a closet for the holidays, but I can’t . . . for my boys,” Tuozzolo said when asked how she and her sons have been coping. “I need to figure out what life needs to be like going forward for my boys and what will be important to them in terms of the holidays.”
With the help of relatives, friends and her family in blue, Tuozzolo, 41, says she is trying to move away from the pain and come to terms with the loss. “I have a lot of people around me that are keeping me up and keeping me strong,” she said.
Since her husband was killed, Tuozzolo’s parents have temporarily moved into her Greenlawn home, offering support and help with her sons, Austin, 4, and Joseph, 3. “They don’t necessarily need to be with me right there, holding my hand,” Tuozzolo said. “But the fact that I know they’re in the background, waiting for me in case I need them, is so important.”
She has kept her children on the same schedule they had before the shooting. She says she never pulled them out of school and makes sure they have the same time at night to watch television, read books and then take a bath before bed.
There have been trips to a Jets game at The Meadowlands and a visit to the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center.
The family was shattered on Nov. 4 when Sgt. Tuozzolo, a 19-year veteran, was shot in the head in a confrontation with a man from Brentwood.
Tuozzolo and others were responding to a 911 call from a friend of the estranged wife of the gunman, Manuel Rosales, 35, who said he had broken into her home on Beach Avenue in the Van Nest section of the Bronx, police said. The wife and the couple’s 3-year-old son were in the apartment.
Shortly after the call, Rosales fled in his red Jeep. 
Minutes later, Tuozzolo, the designated response sergeant, spotted the vehicle about a half-mile away at Bronx River and Noble avenues near Noble Playground, police said. 
Tuozzolo, Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, Officer Arvid Flores, and probationary Officer Elwin Martinez, a recruit who was just days into his field training, closed in on Rosales. 
The Brentwood man drew his weapon and Tuozzolo warned the others, shouting “Gun, gun, gun!” Rosales opened fire, the first bullets in a 20-round exchange with police. 
He struck Tuozzolo in the head and torso. Kwo was hit in the legs several times. Martinez managed to fire back and fatally shot Rosales. Both wounded sergeants were rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, but only Kwo survived. Tuozzolo was taken off life support hours after the shooting. He was 41. 
Paul Tuozzolo was posthumously promoted to sergeant special-assignment at his funeral at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa, which was attended by thousands of police officers from across the country, and Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill, who delivered the eulogy.
“It is a rank and designation in line with a man who has made the supreme sacrifice,” O’Neill said.
At the funeral and every day that followed, Tuozzolo says she has had one simple message for anyone who crossed her path: “Tell everyone you love them every day,” she said with tears welling up. “Because you never know when it’s going to be your last time to tell them.” 
Paul Tuozzolo joined the department in December 1997 and was first assigned to the 28th Precinct in Harlem. He eventually moved to the 25th and 26th precincts during the next nine years. During his stint at the 26th Precinct, a mutual friend introduced him to Lisa. Paul, who worked the midnight shift, would often meet Lisa before she left for work at a nearby school, sometimes bringing her breakfast.
Tuozzolo was soon promoted to sergeant, with the help of his wife, who said she helped him study for the exam. He was eventually reassigned to the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx.
Lisa Tuozzolo, now an assistant principal at West Islip High School, remembers her husband as a laid-back man who loved to wisecrack and keep everyone loose.
She said he loved to work with his hands, from cars to computers to construction. Paul Tuozzolo would regularly purchase a classic car with no engine and spend the next two months building it from scratch. Once fully assembled, he would sell it, hoping to soon find another car and start the process again. The latest car he had rebuilt was a late 1960s Plymouth Road Runner, she said.
Tuozzolo worked on cars with his brother and father when he was younger, and had an engine lift installed in his garage. He’s also reconstructed a baby blue Chevrolet pickup truck and a Mustang, affectionately known to his children as “Daddy’s superfast race car Mustang convertible,” the one they would take to visit family on the South Fork.
Lisa Tuozzolo said her husband also loved construction, rebuilding his entire basement and adding a home-theater system, complete with stadium seating. His wife’s heartbreak returns when she reflects on the plans they had: His retirement was just a year away, and Lisa and Paul talked about a family trip to Walt Disney World next summer and of spending quality time at home.
Paul Tuozzolo’s custom Jets jersey hangs on a closet door, untouched. It is one of the things she has not put away. The boys spot the jersey during bath time. It is emblazoned on the back with the number 75, the year Paul Tuozzolo was born. “That’s Daddy’s jersey,” the boys exclaim when they see it, she said. 
Tuozzolo’s latest project had been a tree house he started to build in October for his children. There are no walls and no roof, but there are platforms and hanging ropes that Austin and Joseph can swing from.
Their father has become their favorite topic, and they ask nonstop questions about him and scour through old photos. “Kids are really resilient,” said Tuozzolo, as she dried her tears. “Way more than you ever expect them to be.”
Austin often dreams about his father and one recent morning the boy ran into Tuozzolo’s bedroom to tell her about the latest one, she said. In the dream, his father is alive and plays with him.
“It’s stuff like that that breaks my heart because I’m scared that my son is going to only have those memories of dreams rather than the experiences that he’s had with him,” Tuozzolo said through tears.
Tuozzolo wants her husband’s heroic legacy of service to emerge as an example to schoolchildren. A scholarship has been set up in his name. She knows it is up to her to mold her young family into her late husband’s image.
She tells them their father was caring, thoughtful and courteous.
“He was someone who risked his life for strangers,” she said. “I want my boys to remember their dad as a hero.”

Mourners at Tuozzolo’s funeral were told the sergeant’s final words were a warning about the suspect they were closing in on: “Gun! Gun! Gun!”
Thousands of police officers formed a sea of blue outside St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa. Utility poles along Merrick Road, the route of the hearse, were festooned with blue ribbons and handwritten signs offering prayers and support.
Then came an emotional two-hour funeral Mass in the packed church — with top police officials, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and Cardinal Timothy Dolan in attendance.
Tuozzolo, 41, of Greenlawn, who was married with two young sons, died after being shot in the head last Friday by the fleeing burglary suspect, Manuel Rosales, 35, of Brentwood. Rosales died in a hail of police gunfire.
Edward Mullins, president of the Sergeants’ Benevolent Assocation, told mourners that Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, who was shot in the leg in the shootout, asked him to share a recent conversation. 
“Sgt. Kwo said to me, ‘Paul saved my life, Ed. . . . Paul’s final words were a warning to me and my partner. He yelled to us, ‘Gun! Gun! Gun!’ ”
Mullins said of Tuozzolo: “Paul was a warrior. His actions last Friday can only be described as those of a hero.”
“We were blessed to have him among us, and the NYPD was blessed to call him our own,” NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said in his eulogy, pausing as his voice quaked with emotion. “ . . . Paul protected all New Yorkers, and he died while keeping people safe.”
At one point, O’Neill, attending his first line-of-duty funeral since becoming the top cop, addressed Tuozzolo’s wife, Lisa, and their sons, Austin, 4, and Joseph, 3.
“We can never thank you adequately for what he gave our department and our city,” he told them.
O’Neill described Tuozzolo as a cop with a “level demeanor” — a front-line supervisor “with a dry sense of humor, who never got upset.” 
Tuozzolo joined the NYPD in 1997, because, the commissioner said, “he wanted to lead a life of significance. And he did.”
O’Neill announced that Tuozzolo would be posthumously promoted to sergeant special-assignment, drawing rousing applause.
Tuozzolo, who grew up in Bayville, was a 19-year veteran of the NYPD, a department that has grappled with the loss of five officers — all killed in the line of duty — since 2014. In attendance Thursday were the parents of Det. Wenjian Liu, fatally shot in December 2014, and the father of Det. Brian Moore, shot and killed in Queens in May 2015. 
Fellow officers from the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx filled the pews of the church’s balcony. One buried his face in his hands, covering tears. Others clasped their white-gloved hands in prayer.
De Blasio, paused and bowed his head in front of Tuozzolo’s coffin, before delivering his remarks. 
That afternoon in the Bronx, Tuozzolo could have sent his fellow officers forward, but he took the lead, de Blasio said. “That is the measure of the man, and he gave his life protecting his fellow officers, protecting all of us.”
De Blasio added: “There is one fewer dangerous person on the streets today because Sgt. Tuozzolo stepped forward to fight danger, to fight crime, to fight the evil around us.”
Police officials said President-elect Donald Trump had called the widow to offer his condolences.
Outside the church, thousands of NYPD officers gathered in tribute, joined by cops from Canada, Chicago and other departments across the metropolitan area. 
Police recruits from the NYPD and Nassau and Suffolk police departments lined the funeral procession route, where Putnam County, New York State, and Park and MTA police were also represented.
Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini and acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter stood with their officers. 
All saluted as pallbearers carried the sergeant’s burgundy coffin draped with the green, white and blue NYPD flag.
A sobbing Lisa Tuozzolo followed, held up by two men — one on each side.
Burial was at St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries in East Farmingdale.

Hundreds of mourners paid tribute to slain NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, killed last week by a gunman in the Bronx, at his wake in Bethpage on Wednesday. 
Many came from Bayville, where Tuozzolo grew up and where blue ribbons now line the roads. Others were politicians and leaders in law enforcement, lamenting an increasing spate of violence against police officers. Some came from out of state. 
Tuozzolo, 41, of Greenlawn, a 19-year NYPD veteran, was fatally shot in the head Friday afternoon by Manuel Rosales, 35, of Brentwood, police said. Rosales was later killed by police during an exchange of gunfire.
Police officers wearing helmets, protective vests, and holding heavy weaponry, along with bomb-sniffing dogs, guarded the Fredrick J. Chapey &amp; Sons Funeral Home in Bethpage, where the wake took place.
“Our whole town is turned upside down,” said Harry Carter, 43, a teacher from Bayville who grew up with Tuozzolo and his brothers. He remembered Paul Tuozzolo’s love of fishing and fixing cars. “It’s ridiculous how much sorrow people in our town have.”
Visitors included Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford); NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill; O’Neill’s predecessor, William Bratton; Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano; and top brass from the Nassau County Police Department. 
Hundreds of officers attended an evening wake, as did New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who entered the funeral home about 7:15 p.m. and left some 20 minutes later.
King said the shooting “should be a reminder of how tough a cop’s job is.” 
“People should be very reluctant to second-guess a cop when he has to use deadly force,” he said, noting that it “shows the constant danger cops are under.”
He said that while cop shootings across the country are too frequent, “all too often, cops are being criticized.”
Nassau police Chief of Department Steven Skrynecki, who also attended the wake, said, “every day” police are “willing to make these sacrifices for public safety.”
He offered the department’s support to the grieving NYPD community. “We will be here as a unified force to make sure the family and police get through this,” he said.
He noted this was the second time in “recent history” that mourners were gathering for a fallen cop at the funeral home, referring to NYPD Officer Brian Moore, 25, of Massapequa, who was shot and killed in May 2015 in Queens.
A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Church, 2 Bayview Ave. in Massapequa, according to the funeral home’s website. Interment will be private, the website said.
The Massapequa school district is closing schools Thursday because of the road closures and expected traffic, the district’s website said.
A friend of the family, Jeannette Whitehead, 64, of Manhasset, said “it’s incredible when you see this many people come out.”
Leslie Williams, a condolence correspondent for the South Carolina Sheriffs Association, based in Columbia, South Carolina, offered support from his out-of-state colleagues.

The handgun used by a Brentwood man to shoot NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo twice in the head Friday in the Bronx, killing the 19-year veteran from Greenlawn, was reported stolen in 2011 in Suffolk, police said Monday. 
It was unclear how Manuel Rosales, 35 — who police said fatally shot Tuozzolo, 41, and wounded NYPD Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, 31, during an encounter just before 3 p.m., obtained the semi-automatic .45-caliber handgun. Rosales, arrested 17 times in Suffolk County — most recently for domestic violence — was shot and killed in a gun battle with cops who fired 23 shots in the exchange after responding to a disturbance call at the Bronx home of his estranged wife, Tia Rosales.
An autopsy revealed bullet wounds to the brain and skull killed Tuozzolo, a law enforcement official said. Funeral services for the married father of two young children are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Rose of Lima Church in Massapequa.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office responded Monday to assertions by Tia Rosales on social media that prosecutors ignored her phone calls about the domestic violence case and judges acted negligently in releasing him from custody.
“If anyone is truly to blame for this tragedy, I blame Suffolk County District court and the judge who let him walk out of there knowing he was in mental distress, knowing he needed immediate psychiatric care,” Tia Rosales wrote on Facebook. “Because of this GROSS negligence, two husbands and two fathers are lost.”
Rosales, who referred to herself as “grief stricken,” wrote that she was thinking of Tuozzolo’s wife and children. But her post also cast Rosales as the victim of abuse as a child that he couldn’t rise above, bringing “violence” into their marriage.
Tia Rosales could not be reached for comment Monday, and Manuel Rosales’ father declined an interview.
“Manny should never have been on the street in the condition he was in,” she wrote. “Suffolk County District Attorneys office was aware of his condition mentally when he was arraigned for his last arrest. Instead of taking proper measure, a gross negligence occurred and he was released. I attempted two separate phone calls to assistant district attorney Elizabeth Moran last week trying to understand what was happening with this case. I never received a call back.”
Robert Clifford, a spokesman for District Attorney Thomas Spota, disputed her assertions, saying in a statement that prosecutors returned her calls. 
“In fact on Sept. 20, 2016 a phone call was made to Ms. Rosales at the number she provided to police, the number was out of service,” the statement said. “On Oct. 28, 2016, Ms. Rosales called the District Attorney’s Office twice. Both calls were promptly returned and messages left to call back. No further call back was received from Ms. Rosales.”
The statement also said prosecutors requested bail of $20,000 cash at Manuel Rosales’ July 30 arraignment on charges of aggravated harassment. District Court Judge Pierce Cohalan set bail at $2,000 cash or $4,000 bond, which Rosales posted. 
The case then appeared three times in the county’s Domestic Violence court. At the last appearance, on Oct. 26, prosecutors asked to reduce the charges to a misdemeanor, a court spokesman said. His next appearance would have been Nov. 16. 
Mary Porter, a spokeswoman for Suffolk courts, said in a statement:
“This is a tragedy for all families involved. The judge at arraignment considered all of the relevant factors and set bail consistent with the information he had at the time. . . . The purpose of bail is to ensure that a defendant appears in court at all of his or her future court appearances. Mr. Rosales appeared at all of his subsequent court dates.”
Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini declined to comment Monday on the court’s handling of the case, saying only that in Rosales’ last arrest “a judge made a determination to release this individual.” 
Sini said the department is taking a “hard look” at its interactions with Rosales.
“The fact that he was arrested repeatedly in Suffolk County, I think speaks volumes about what the Suffolk County Police Department did to keep tabs on this individual and to be as active as possible,” said Sini. “But certainly we’re looking at all the encounters that we had with him and if there can be any lessons learned here.”

The wake for fallen NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo will be held Wednesday in Bethpage, and funeral services are scheduled for Thursday morning in Massapequa. 
Tuozzolo, 41, of Greenlawn, a 19-year NYPD veteran, was shot and killed Friday trying to apprehend a gunman in the Bronx. 
Visiting hours are 2 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Fredrick J. Chapey &amp; Sons Funeral Home, 20 Hicksville Rd., according to the funeral home’s website.
There will be a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima, 2 Bayview Ave. in Massapequa, according to the website.
Interment will be private, the website said.
Nassau County police said parking is prohibited on Hicksville Road, between Hempstead Turnpike and the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, and on Stewart Avenue, from Hempstead Turnpike to Boundary Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Also, on Wednesday, Stewart Avenue from Hempstead Turnpike to Boundary Avenue will be closed to traffic from noon to 10:30 p.m., police said.
On the day of the funeral, Merrick Road, between Hicksville Road and Park Boulevard, will be closed to traffic at 9 a.m. until around 2 p.m., police said.

Paul Tuozzolo was unassuming, but there was no doubt the NYPD sergeant from Huntington was devoted both to his family and protecting the public, those who knew him said. 
“He was a good guy, a family man,” said a neighbor, Danny Clarke. “A good person, a decent human being. It’s so sad to hear his life was taken like that.”
Tuozzolo, 41, who was married with two young children, was shot and killed in a shootout with an armed suspect Friday afternoon in the Bronx. 
The slain officer’s friends, neighbors and NYPD comrades mourned the loss of the friendly man with the cheerful smile.
One of Tuozzolo’s former high school teachers was shaken for his parents, who still live in the community. Tuozzolo’s mother is battling cancer.
“He was such a nice boy,” said Beatrice Rupp of Bayville, now retired. “He came from such a nice family.”
Tuozzolo grew up in Bayville. Several years ago, he and his wife moved to Huntington, where they were raising their two sons, both under age 5, friends said.
The officer, a 19-year NYPD veteran, spent the last 10 years in the Bronx, the department said.
At a news conference, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio hailed Tuozzolo as “a longtime and devoted member of the 43rd Precinct and a loving father of two young children.”
Bill Urban, 73, of Bayville, said Tuozzolo grew up in the house next door. 
“Nice family,” Urban said. “I can’t believe it. Man alive.”
Urban, who said he does not know the family well, said Tuozzolo, his wife and their children often returned to the neighborhood to visit his parents. 
“I saw them almost all summer,” he said. 
Tuozzolo family members could not be reached for comment.
In front of Tuozzolo’s three-story, cream-colored home in Huntington, four Suffolk police cars were parked Friday eveing.
On the quiet street, news of the tragedy quickly spread.
A neighbor, Fred Chacalos, 62, said Tuozzolo was friendly. “If I saw him washing his car while I was walking my dog, I’d say hello.”
Among the many people saddened by the death was Ann Vikingstad, who lives across the street. 
“My grandson wants to be a police officer,” she said Friday evening. But now, after another fatal line-of-duty shooting, she’s thinking of her grandson’s safety.
“This is too close,” she said.

An NYPD sergeant — a 19-year veteran from Huntington — was killed Friday by a Brentwood man who opened fire as officers responded to a report of a disturbance at the Bronx home of the gunman’s estranged wife, officials said.
Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo, 41, was shot in the head shortly before 3 p.m. at 1575 Bronx River Ave. as he and several other officers closed in on Manuel Rosales, 35. 
Rosales shot another officer, Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, in the leg, officials said.
Kwo, 30, was listed in stable condition at Jacobi Medical Center, where Tuozzolo was pronounced dead after being taken off life support.
Rosales also was shot and killed by police gunfire, including by a new recruit who was still in training, officials said. Rosales was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This city is in mourning, and the family of the NYPD is in mourning and particularly all the men and women of the 4-3 [Precinct] are in mourning right now over the loss of a very good man, a devoted man, the man who committed his life to protecting all of us,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference announcing the death of Tuozzolo, a married father of two children younger than 5.
The sergeant is the fifth line-of-duty death suffered by the NYPD since December 2014. It comes amid a spate of shooting deaths of police, which includes the ambush of two officers earlier this week in Des Moines.
De Blasio appeared with NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill at the hospital about 6 p.m. Friday night to announce details of the first fatal shooting of an NYPD officer since the October 2015 shooting death of Randolph Holder, 32, who was killed along the FDR Drive in Manhattan while pursuing a shooting suspect. 
“It is with great anguish that I have to tell you today that an NYPD sergeant was shot and killed while doing his job, while trying to keep the people of this great city safe,” O’Neill said before describing the events that led up to the shooting.
“I always talk about what a great job this is, but there’s nothing worse than a day like today,” O’Neill said.
In a statement, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said: “Today, a sergeant in the New York City Police Department has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” adding that “my deepest sympathies are with the families of the officers involved in today’s tragedy in the Bronx, and with Commissioner O’Neill and the NYPD as they cope with the loss of one of their own.”
Ed Mullins, president of the NYPD sergeants’ union who also knew Tuozzolo, said: “What occurred here today was the result of police officers protecting a woman who was afraid of her own husband and, unfortunately, Sergeant Tuozzolo lost his life.” 
Patrick Lynch, president of the rank-and-file union of NYPD officers, said the 25-year-old rookie who fired on Rosales had been on the street in field training for just three days. 
“His training kicked in,” Lynch said. “He saw a gun come out that window and rounds start being fired and fellow police officers, a sergeant, go down. He responded like a professional with 30 years, meanwhile he has three days. He did well.”
“Sgt. Tuozzolo is a resident of Huntington so he was a neighbor as well as a law enforcement brother,” said James Carver, Nassau County Police Benevolent Association president, in a statement. “The Nassau County PBA and its members can be counted on to do whatever they can to support the families of the two officers and the brother officers of the NYPD and especially the 43rd Precinct where Sgt. Tuozzolo was assigned for the last 10-years. It is a sad day for law enforcement.”
The NYPD said the drama unfolded when police received a 911 call about 2:45 p.m. from a woman who said that an armed man had broken into her home at 1460 Beach Ave. in the Van Nest section of the Bronx. A dispatcher told responding units that the man had left the home shortly after the incident was broadcast, and that he was driving a red Jeep, O’Neill said.
Living at the location were Rosales’ estranged 29-year-old wife and her two children, as well as a 50-year-old woman who made the 911 call, the NYPD said.
The NYPD said officers noticed a vehicle matching that description on Bronx River and Noble avenues near Noble Playground about 2:52 p.m. and approached the vehicle, at which time Rosales opened fire and struck Tuozzolo in the head and upper torso. 
Kwo was shot in the leg several times.
“A preliminary review of the suspect’s history reveals 17 prior arrests within Suffolk County, New York, where we believe he has been living,” O’Neill said.
Court records list a 35-year-old Manuel Rosales with aggravated harassment and second-degree criminal contempt of court in Suffolk’s domestic violence court. He was due in court on Nov. 16.
The charges arise out of an incident in which Rosales grabbed a woman’s hair and shook her head back and forth, according to a law enforcement source. This incident happened in July at the Rosales home on Shirley Street in Bohemia, the source said.
Records show Manuel Rosales has served time in prison upstate, most recently for a conviction of fourth-degree criminal contempt of stolen property.
In Brentwood, where police said Rosales was living, a man who identified himself as the suspect’s father said his son had gone astray early in his life.
“It looks like they killed my son,” said a man who said his name was Manuel Rosales. He added that he had tried to stop his son from misbehaving when he had brushes with the law as a teenager but that the criminal justice system was too lenient on him.
“Even when parents want to help the children, the system is in bad shape,” Rosales said. “When he was 16, a judge told me that he was emancipated and I couldn’t tell him what to do.”
The elder Rosales said that his son likely went to the Bronx address to confront his estranged wife, with whom he was embroiled in a custody dispute over their 2-year-old child.
“She took their child to the Bronx and put an order of protection on him because she was using the child to fight him,” said Rosales, who owns a small construction company. “When he came to a Halloween party here that we had with costumes, my children came with the grandchildren and the only child missing was his and when he left I knew he was feeling sad.”
Rosales didn’t specify what incidents his son had been involved in, but he lamented his untimely death.
“In the last few years he had changed a lot, straightened out his life” when he married, the elder Rosales said, adding that his son had problems “over the child.”
On another section of Long Island, four Suffolk police cars were parked in front of and near Tuozzolo’s three-story, cream-colored home on a quiet street in Huntington. 
A family member of a neighbor said an NYPD helicopter had landed nearby earlier. Three SUVs were parked in the driveway of the house, which was dark except for an outdoor light.
Hours after the shooting, the Van Nest neighborhood where it occurred was teeming with cops. Scores of officers canvassed the area with detectives knocking on doors and uniformed cops conducting a line search for evidence.
Shakira Hatim, who lives on Bronx River Avenue where the shooting occurred, returned to her home Friday night in tears. 
“The police officer got shot, it’s very upsetting,” she said, crying. “The officers protect us.”
She learned about the shooting when she came home from work to find her street blocked and a flood of officers. She planned to spend the night elsewhere. 
“It’s so upsetting,” said Hatim, 47, a child care worker. “This is sad — right in front of my house.”
In 2014, Wenjian Liu, 32 and Rafael Ramos, 40, were gunned down by Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, 28, as they sat in a patrol car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20. Brinsley fled to the subway, where he committed suicide.
Six months later, Brian Moore, 25, of Plainedge was killed after he was shot in the head during a street stop in Queens Village. In October 2015, Holder was gunned down. Criminal cases against suspects in the Moore and Holder killings are pending.
Moore, Liu, Ramos and Holder were all posthumously promoted to detective.
“This heartbreaking incident puts into clear focus both the difficulties our police officers face every day and the true scourge of guns and gun violence faced by our police, our communities and our nation,” Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr. said Friday after the death of Tuozzolo.
The mayor’s office announced Friday night that all flags on New York City buildings would fly at half-staff until Tuozzolo’s interment.
