TAMPA, Fla. -- Eduardo Nuñez's right wrist area isn't healing quite as quickly as the Yankees, or the reserve infielder, hoped.

Nuñez, who left Monday's game in Clearwater against the Phillies after he was hit by an Austin Hyatt pitch, said he definitely would not play Thursday and wasn't sure when he'll be back.

"We'll see tomorrow how I feel," said Nuñez, his lower right forearm in a wrap.

The 24-year-old Nuñez, who had X-rays Monday that were negative, said, "Yeah, a little bit," when asked if he still felt soreness.

"We'll just go day by day," Joe Girardi said.

Soriano gives it a go

Rafael Soriano was not scheduled to throw Wednesday but took over for Hiroki Kuroda to start the third.

"He came and said he was ready," Girardi said. "So we put him on the list. For whatever reason he wanted to pitch today so I didn't ask any questions. I think it's good for him to get out there and I was pleased with what I saw."

Soriano allowed a hit and struck out two in one scoreless inning.

Yogi's in town

Yogi Berra, a fixture at Yankees' spring training, flew to Tampa Tuesday night and came to camp Wednesday.

"I felt like camp started today, Yogi's here," Girardi said. "It's great to see him. Just kind of puts a smile on everyone's face."

Garden City graduate Matt Daley, the former Rockies righthander who signed a minor-league deal in the offseason, threw 15 pitches off a half mound Tuesday, his first work off a mound of any kind since last June.

"A lot better than I thought," said Daley, who underwent surgery to repair his labrum in August. "I feel really good. No soreness."

Daley will throw again Friday.

Extra bases

Mark Teixeira, who jammed his left thumb Tuesday in Bradenton against the Pirates, said he was "all good," and still planned to make the trip to Dunedin Thursday for the game against the Blue Jays. The first baseman was not scheduled to play Wednesday and took regular BP with no issues . . . Several scouts have raved about what they've seen early this spring from 19-year-old catching prospect Gary Sanchez, particularly his throws to second . . . Mariano Rivera will throw his second live BP session this morning and could make his first spring appearance Sunday . . . Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, scheduled to play its entire season on the road as PNC Field is renovated, will be nicknamed the Empire State Yankees for 2012.
