Meet Kennard Jones
Kennard Jones, 29, joined the Ducks for the 2011 season after spending 2010 with the Newark Bears. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in the third round of the 2002 draft, the son-in-law of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn has played as high as Triple-A. Last year with the Bears, for whom he batted .296 with 40 steals and 80 runs in 135 games, he was named to the Atlantic League postseason All-Star second team. Entering Sunday's game, he was batting .270 (.407 OBP) through 74 at-bats. His 17 walks ranked second in the Atlantic League.
Greatest moment of your career?
"Being the first African-American player in the Big Ten [at Indiana] to win the player of the year award. Nobody knows that."
What is your greatest asset?
"I feel like I'm an all-around player, but probably speed. Other than that, I feel like I'm pretty well-rounded."
How nervous were you meeting Tony Gwynn for the first time?
"I was and I wasn't. Because when you grow up in the Baltimore area, you don't really get to see the guys on the West Coast like Tony Gwynn. I grew up watching the Cal Ripkens and the Albert Belles."
What is the best part about playing on the East Coast near your hometown?
"Playing on the East Coast is a blessing. Just being able to play is a blessing."
Who is the most famous person in your cell phone not named Tony Gwynn?
"[Baltimore Orioles outfielder] Adam Jones."
Ultimately, what would you like to accomplish this season?
"Hopefully to be a major-league baseball player before I get old and dusty. While I'm playing at a high level, hopefully somebody will see the passion I bring to the field. If not, I'll be with the Ducks competing for a championship until the end of the season."
