Ducks closer Jon Hunton is a poster child for the rapid-fire roster changes of the Atlantic League, where late-season acquisitions are often thrust into starring roles.

Obtained in a Sept. 11 trade with the 2011 American Association champion Grand Prairie (Texas) AirHogs, Hunton appeared in only three regular-season games with the Ducks.

But he will be instrumental as the team looks to defeat the York (Pa.) Revolution in the best-of-five Atlantic League Championship Series, beginning Wednesday night at Bethpage Ballpark at 6:35 p.m.

It would be the franchise's second title (and first since 2004).

"At first, I came here not knowing my role," Hunton said. "I talked to the front office and said, 'I'll do whatever you want me to do.' So I really didn't know what my role would be."

But Hunton, 28, had come off a standout season with the AirHogs, where he led the league with 25 saves and had a 1.77 ERA. Now, Hunton has the rare opportunity to win two professional titles in one season.

"It would mean a lot," Hunton said. "Obviously, we set our goals to win one ring every year, no matter where you are at."

Hunton took over the closer's role from Bubbie Buzachero, who had 22 saves during the regular season. In the Liberty Division Championship Series against Southern Maryland, the 6-9, 260-pound Hunton nailed down both of his save opportunities.

"Before we even started the playoffs, he gave us a little taste of what he has," manager Kevin Baez said. "He's our closer and has done nothing but good things for us."

Hunton is raring to go, appreciative of the organization's faith in him as the late-inning go-to guy.

"I like to rise to these occasions," Hunton said. "I don't want to go out there and blow the game."

Rotation stalwart Mike Loree, who led the Atlantic League in wins (14), ERA (1.98) and strikeouts (131), will start Game 1.

The outfield platoon will consist of Kennard Jones, Matt Esquivel, Lew Ford and Chaminade alum Kraig Binick.
