Trevor Bauer threw a sarcastic message toward his critics Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania after throwing a rather impressive second start for the Long Island Ducks.
“Trevor Bauer sucks so much,” he wrote on X. “He’s so washed.”
The 35-year-old righthander, with 10 major-league seasons and a 2020 Cy Young Award behind him, had just fired a seven-inning no-hitter against the Lancaster Stormers. The Ducks took a 13-0 Atlantic League victory in game one of a doubleheader at Penn Medicine Park.
It marked the third no-hitter in Ducks history and the first to last seven innings. They went on to sweep the twinbill and the three-game series, winning the second game 6-2 to improve to 4-2.
Through 5 1/3 innings, Bauer was riding a perfect game. Then he issued a walk — the lone batter to reach against him.
Bauer tossed a fastball on the outside corner for a called third strike to end it, his seventh K of the day. Fifty-four of his 84 pitches went for strikes.
Then, just like after his first game in the chill Tuesday night at Fairfield Properties Ballpark in Central Islip, he was out there signing autographs.
That first start lasted four innings. Bauer yielded two runs, five hits and three walks with eight Ks against Hagerstown, throwing 56 of his 93 pitches for strikes.
“I hadn’t pitched in a game in eight months or something now,” Bauer said afterward. “For having no spring training starts and jumping right in, I thought it was good.”
Now he’s 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA.
Bauer had said there was communication previously with all 30 major-league teams. But he has gone unsigned following his 194-game suspension for what was labeled a violation of MLB’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy and then his subsequent release by the Dodgers in January of 2023. There were no criminal charges.
His last big-league appearance was with L.A. on June 28, 2021, when he beat the Giants at Dodger Stadium. He was soon placed on administrative leave.
His career record with four teams in the majors is 83-69. His career ERA is 3.79 across 222 games, 212 of them starts. He pitched in Japan and Mexico across the past three seasons.
“I’m blackballed,” Bauer said following that initial Ducks outing. “I’m not allowed to play Major League Baseball.”
Bauer is currently scheduled to make his next start Saturday night at home against the Lexington Legends.
