'30 for 30' recalls a night in Vegas

That's OK. I'm happy to be here. Let's begin with the latest ESPN "30 for 30," titled "One Night in Vegas" and premiering at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The film, by Reggie Rock Bythewood, recounts the events of 14 years to the day earlier, when Mike Tyson fought Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in front of a crowd that included his friend, the rapper Tupac Shakur.

Later that night Shakur was gunned down on a Vegas street, shocking the music world and Tyson, who is among those interviewed.

One of the beauties of "30 for 30" is that it offers vastly different film-making approaches, and Bythewood's work is no exception from the start - a spoken word poetry session. The film also uses animation to unusual effect.

The portraits of Tyson and Shakur generally are sympathetic and somewhat lacking in depth, perhaps understandable given the time constraints.

But "One Night in Vegas" is a jarring, behind-the-scenes look back at a wild night that many viewers probably remember only vaguely, even though it was a mere decade-and-a-half ago.
