Tim Richmond took it to limit

Tuesday night's "30 for 30" documentary on ESPN is "Tim Richmond: To the Limit," a look back at the driver who shook up NASCAR's good-old-boy culture in the mid-1980s with his flamboyant showmanship and lifestyle.

Richmond eventually died of AIDS at age 34 in 1989.

The story might be old news to NASCAR diehards but I had forgotten most of it, assuming I even was paying attention back then, so it was both interesting and educational.

The storytelling benefits from the fact there is ample archival footage of Richmond from his heyday. The filmmaker supplements that with fresh interviews of key figures in Richmond's life and career, including his sister.
