Top 10 night on “The Voice” was strange on a number of levels — as if the tension from Ferguson, Missouri, was spilling over into the singing competition.
The pacing seemed off. The coaches seemed on edge. But the Top 10 were energized.
“This is the best live show I’ve ever seen,” Blake Shelton said. And he was right.
All 10 finalists were on point with their performances, with several delivering some of their best work.
Here’s how the night shook out:
1. MATT McANDREW, “Fix You”: His take on the Coldplay hit was almost too faithful, even staying in his falsetto longer than Chris Martin does. It wasn’t until the growl near the end that he took the entertaining performance in a different direction, but that was enough to keep him ahead of the pack. “You really can do everything, but you do it in such a way that’s so humbling,” Adam said. “You can do anything you want.”
2. CRAIG WAYNE BOYD, “I Walk the Line”: Turning the Johnny Cash classic into an outlaw country ballad was smart, but there was way too much note at the end and the emphasis got all messed up. That said, it was compelling and a sign that he could be a front-runner. “You’re going to have a whole career after this,” Gwen said, with his coach Blake adding, “It was magic.”
3. DaNICA SHIREY, “I Have Nothing”: DaNica actually does the Whitney Houston classic justice — always a tall order, as she delivers the difficult balance of strength and vulnerability. She received nothing but raves, including one from Clive Davis himself. “Could you do it again?” Gwen said.
4. TAYLOR JOHN WILLIAMS, “Come Together”: His instincts were good on reworking The Beatles classic (though maybe he could have rethought the headband). He didn’t quite pull it off all the time, but was still strong. “You looked like a ninja, it was awesome,” Blake said. “If I was 15 right now, you would be all over my locker,” Gwen said.
5. LUKE WADE, “Try a Little Tenderness”: Back on track after struggling last week, Luke did a great job with the first two-thirds of the Otis Redding, but then the move into The Throne’s version of “Otis” felt a little forced. “I felt like Jay Z,” Carson Daly said. “I wanted to come in on that.”
6. ANITA ANTOINETTE, “Let Her Go”: Her reggae take on the Passenger song was clever and fun, though not as well executed as it could have been. Her performance actually was more engaging than her voice, oddly enough, making Pharrell comment, “The way to shine is to just have fun.” Gwen said, “It really feels like a song you would do.”
7. CHRIS JAMISON, “Uptown Funk”: It took him a while to nail the swagger of the Mark Ronson/Bruno Mars hit, but when he got there, it was impressive. “It’s something that we haven’t seen on this show,” Adam said. “That, to me, is awesome.”
8. DAMIEN, “You and I”: Sometimes, his emotion got away from him on the Stevie Wonder classic, but when he was in control, especially during the escalating runs, he was stunning. “I felt the entire audience get on board,” Adam said.
9. REAGAN JAMES, “Fancy”: Not sure why Blake is letting her do songs outside the regular mold, but doing the Iggy Azalea hit was a bit of a misstep. She did fine with it, handling both the singing and the rapping bits, but let’s be honest, no one really comes to Iggy looking for vocal prowess. “I think this was your best performance so far,” Adam said.
10. RYAN SILL, “Starlight”: He really is rapidly improving. The question is whether young Ryan can improve fast enough to stay in the show and time may have run out, even though his take on the Muse hit was quite charming in places. “You’re blossoming into this artist before our eyes,” said Gwen, who personally got the song rights for him.
