Beating the strongest comedy field in years, <a href="/topics/ABC">ABC</a>'s "Modern Family" was crowned TV's best last night at the 62nd Annual Primetime <a href="/topics/Emmy_Awards">Emmy Awards</a>. 
Not quite an upset and not quite a sure bet either, the punditocracy had pretty much narrowed this race to just two shows - "Glee" and "Modern Family." And early in the evening both appeared evenly matched, winning key acting, writing and directing awards. Clearly, it was to be a "Glee"-vs-"Family" kind of night. In the end, only one could win, even if it seemed like both should. 
Oh yes, and "<a href="/topics/Mad_Men">Mad Men</a>" won as best drama for the third consecutive year. 
Meanwhile, there were upsets in a night not always kindly disposed to surprises or shocks. Northport High grad <a href="/topics/Edie_Falco">Edie Falco</a> pulled down a win for outstanding actress in a comedy series - "Nurse Jackie" - becoming the first actress to win both a top drama and comedy actress Emmy award; she won three times in the drama category on "<a href="/topics/The_Sopranos">The Sopranos</a>." 
Jim Parsons, the splendid über-nerd Sheldon Cooper of "<a href="/topics/The_Big_Bang_Theory">The Big Bang Theory</a>," toppled multiple winner <a href="/topics/Alec_Baldwin">Alec Baldwin</a> of "<a href="/topics/30_Rock">30 Rock</a>." And maybe the biggest eye-popper was <a href="/topics/Kyra_Sedgwick">Kyra Sedgwick</a>, whose Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson of "<a href="/topics/The_Closer">The Closer</a>" has long been admired and long-nominated. She won her first Emmy upsetting the favorite, <a href="/topics/Julianna_Margulies">Julianna Margulies</a>, of "The Good Wife." And longtime reality winner "<a href="/topics/The_Amazing_Race">The Amazing Race</a>" was upset by "<a href="/topics/Top_Chef">Top Chef</a>." 
Multiple winner <a href="/topics/Bryan_Cranston">Bryan Cranston</a> of "<a href="/topics/Breaking_Bad">Breaking Bad</a>" won for best actor/drama for the third time, and his longtime and equally excellent castmate, Aaron Paul won for best supporting actor/drama, another upset. 
The <a href="/topics/HBO">HBO</a> movie "<a href="/topics/Temple_Grandin">Temple Grandin</a>," about a young autistic woman who beat the odds, had a great night, too, with a best movie win, as well as a best actress win for <a href="/topics/Claire_Danes">Claire Danes</a>. "The Pacific" - <a href="/topics/HBO">HBO</a>'s magnificent bookend to "Band of Brothers" - won best miniseries.

'BORN TO RUN' OPEN 
<a href="/topics/Jon_Hamm">Jon Hamm</a>, <a href="/topics/Betty_White">Betty White</a>, <a href="/topics/Jorge_Garcia">Jorge Garcia</a>, <a href="/topics/Tina_Fey">Tina Fey</a>, <a href="/topics/Lea_Michele">Lea Michele</a>, <a href="/topics/Randy_Jackson">Randy Jackson</a>, <a href="/topics/Tim_Gunn">Tim Gunn</a> and <a href="/topics/Kate_Gosselin">Kate Gosselin</a> - got the <a href="/topics/Emmy_Awards">Emmys</a> off to a rousing launch. Who was missing? Unless you include the guy who actually wrote and performed the song a few decades ago, very few names (who either earned nominations, or did not - <a href="/topics/Kate_Gosselin">Kate</a> among the latter) This was an entertaining open, but a crowded, noisy one, and when host <a href="/topics/Jimmy_Fallon">Jimmy Fallon</a> belted out the final chords - gamely, loudly, passionately - you realized why Auto-tune was invented.

A NEW 'FAMILY' 
Last night's show launched with comedy awards, with the segment ending with a pre-produced tribute, if you will, to "Modern Family" - re-imagined as sort of a (non-gay) testosterone-laced sitcom. Special guest stars in this segment included "<a href="/topics/Family_Guy">Family Guy</a>" Stewie Griffin and (who else?) <a href="/topics/George_Clooney">George Clooney</a>.

FALLON AS HOST? 
He brought an odd, offbeat presentation that was utterly unpredictable and always interesting. In a tribute to three deeply loved and now-departed classics - "24," "<a href="/topics/Law_%26_Order">Law &amp; Order</a>" and "Lost" - he actually channeled songs and impressions by <a href="/topics/Elton_John">Elton John</a>, Boyz II Men and Billie Joe Armstrong of <a href="/topics/Green_Day">Green Day</a>. The audience wasn't sure if this was tribute or parody, comedy or maybe even insanity.

'Modern Family' beats out 'Glee' for best comedy

<a href="/topics/Hollywood">Hollywood</a>'s in a dark mood, if the dresses on the red carpet at Sunday night's 62nd Annual Primetime <a href="/topics/Emmy_Awards">Emmy Awards</a> are any indication. The Nokia Theatre in <a href="/topics/Los_Angeles">Los Angeles</a> was packed with women (and men) glammed up in navy, purple and not-so-basic black. 
Leading the naval brigade: "<a href="/topics/Glee_%28show%29">Glee</a>'s" <a href="/topics/Lea_Michele">Lea Michele</a>, in a ruffled stunner from <a href="/topics/Oscar_de_la_Renta">Oscar de la Renta</a>. She'd worn other colors at other awards shows, she said, and was looking for something new. "I was thinking, 'Oh, oh, I should do blue, and then when I saw this it was perfect," said Michele. 
Her co-star, <a href="/topics/Jane_Lynch">Jane Lynch</a>, who got married earlier this summer, left her character's tracksuits at home and was one of the classiest looks on the red carpet, in a deep purple gown by Ali Rahimi with a delicate crystal clasp on the shoulder. 
Others doing up the dark: <a href="/topics/Padma_Lakshmi">Padma Lakshmi</a> (in Carolina Herrera's navy strapless chiffon), <a href="/topics/Jane_Krakowski">Jane Krakowski</a> (in custom-made Escada), <a href="/topics/Eva_Longoria_Parker">Eva Longoria</a> Parker (in noir Robert Rodriguez), <a href="/topics/Julia_Louis-Dreyfus">Julia Louis-Dreyfus</a> (Narciso Rodriguez), <a href="/topics/Edie_Falco">Edie Falco</a> (<a href="/topics/Bottega_Veneta">Bottega Veneta</a>) and the queen of the D-List, comedian <a href="/topics/Kathy_Griffin">Kathy Griffin</a> (looking rather A-Listy and skinnyyyy - is she coming out with a diet book or something? - in a sleek black <a href="/topics/Oscar_de_la_Renta">Oscar de la Renta</a>). 
As for the men, salutes go out to host <a href="/topics/Jimmy_Fallon">Jimmy Fallon</a> and "House" star <a href="/topics/Hugh_Laurie">Hugh Laurie</a> - their navy tuxes (<a href="/topics/Jimmy_Fallon">Fallon</a>'s was by <a href="/topics/Tom_Ford">Tom Ford</a>) gave them just a subtle pop in a sea of standard black formalwear. 
Of course, there were some brighter shades worth shouting about - and other looks that just had us shouting. So here they are - our nominations for some additional eye-catchers of the red carpet: 
Biggest surprise: <a href="/topics/Tina_Fey">Tina Fey</a>, who has had so many red-carpet wrongs to her roster that we've wondered if it was intentional. But last night she was serene and classy in an embroidered, chic Oscar de la Renta. 
Best pop of color: We're liking <a href="/topics/Kyra_Sedgwick">Kyra Sedgwick</a>'s choice (berry, by <a href="/topics/Monique_Lhuillier">Monique Lhuillier</a>) and "<a href="/topics/Glee_%28show%29">Glee</a>'s" <a href="/topics/Kevin_McHale">Kevin McHale</a>, going bold with a yellowy-gold bow-tie (it worked). 
Best <a href="/topics/Michael_Jackson">Michael Jackson</a> homage: <a href="/topics/Anna_Paquin">Anna Paquin</a>. How else to explain the "<a href="/topics/True_Blood">True Blood</a>" newlywed's gold epaulet get-up and oddly hiked skirt? (It was by <a href="/topics/Alexander_McQueen">Alexander McQueen</a>.) 
Worst hair: A tough category. There's <a href="/topics/Kelly_Osbourne">Kelly Osbourne</a>, who looked like someone drove her to the Emmys in a convertible (then stole all her combs). <a href="/topics/Claire_Danes">Claire Danes</a>, impersonating a PTA mom. And what happened to <a href="/topics/January_Jones">January Jones</a>? The scared-straight 'do is a crime on someone as beautiful as she is.

Where did real life and <a href="/topics/Hollywood">Hollywood</a> truly intersect? In the Emmy Awards audience. 
Assisted suicide champion <a href="/topics/Jack_Kevorkian">Jack Kevorkian</a> and animal sciences expert <a href="/topics/Temple_Grandin">Temple Grandin</a>, both the subject of <a href="/topics/HBO">HBO</a> movies that earned honors at Sunday night’s Emmy telecast, sat in the audience with the creators of their shows. They got to applaud as the actors who portrayed them, <a href="/topics/Al_Pacino">Al Pacino</a> and <a href="/topics/Claire_Danes">Claire Danes</a>, won Emmys for their work. 
And each got to hear effusive praise from the people who brought their stories to life — along with one of the funniest lines of the night. 
“I’m grateful you’re my friend,” said Adam Mazer, who won an Emmy for writing “You Don’t Know Jack,” about the right-to-die activist and his fight for assisted suicide. “I’m even more grateful you’re not my physician.”

“Bones” star <a href="/topics/Emily_Deschanel">Emily Deschanel</a> was one of many actress who wore purple on the red carpet at the Emmys, but her choice was especially striking: a floor-length, one-shouldered gown in a bold, deep purple with tiered ruffles from <a href="/topics/Max_Azria">Max Azria</a> Atelier. 
“I just put it on and loved it. I love this color, this particular shade of purple,” <a href="/topics/Emily_Deschanel">Deschanel</a> said. “It was just one of those things where you try on a couple dresses, and they’re nice, but then you try this on and it’s, ’This is the one.’ ... And then, of course, you have to try on about 20 other ones just to make sure this is the one. And then ... you go with this one!” 
Jane <a href="/topics/Jane_Lynch">Lynch</a> didn’t spend quite so much time sorting through choices before putting on her own purple gown for the evening, a one-shouldered number with a diamond brooch on the strap from Ali Rahimi, “who makes every dress I wear to these things.” 
“He chose the color, he chose everything about it, because he’s really good at this stuff, so I just let him do what he wants,” said Lynch, a winner for best supporting actress in a comedy series for her role as the acerbic Sue Sylvester on “Glee.” 
As for all the vibrant colors women wore on the carpet, Lynch said, “It’s kind of the antioxidant colors, like strawberries and blueberries.”

The red carpet can be exciting and glamorous — all those stars, all those jewels, all the glamour! But it’s also&nbsp;a little loud and crowded and swarming with media, on the ground and in the air, as Jesse Tyler Ferguson from “Modern Family” found. 
“It’s so unbelievable. It’s very hot,” said Ferguson, who had been nominated for best supporting actor in a comedy series — an award that went to his on-screen husband, Eric Stonestreet. “I feel like there’s, like, a bandit loose or something ’cause all the helicopters are going. I’m thinking maybe there’s a convict on our heels. 
“This is very overwhelming,” he added. “It’s really exciting.”

Some of the ladies from “Glee” were also the ladies in red. 
Jessalyn Gilsig walked up first in a clingy, floor-length <a href="/topics/Nicole_Miller">Nicole Miller</a> gown with a train and a ruffle down the side. 
Why did she choose it? 
“I just knew,” she said. “I put it on and I said, ’You know what? I don’t care what happens tonight, I love my dress.’ It makes me feel strong and it makes me feel happy and hopeful. Those are all good things.” 
A few moments later, co-star Jenna Ushkowitz walked up in her own long, red gown, designed by Kevin Hall and accessorized with gold Neil Lane jewelry. 
So why did she choose hers? 
“I feel like people don’t usually wear red, so that’s why we’re wearing red. I put this one on, it was the first one and it just felt right, you know? It felt good. And you just know.” 
Then Gilsig ambled by and the two greeted each other with a “Hey, lady in red.” But Ushkowitz joked afterward: “We should call each other. Last time we wore the same designer.”

Before the telecast, host <a href="/topics/Jimmy_Fallon">Jimmy Fallon</a> posted a video on Twitter of himself backstage preparing for the show. 
“I’m so excited,” said <a href="/topics/Jimmy_Fallon">Fallon</a>, while gripping his hair anxiously.

Memorable quotes from the Primetime Emmy Awards

Here’s what some of our Emmy watchers were seeing from the lobby, the trophy table and seat 215, Row AA of the Nokia Theatre at the 62nd Annual Emmy Awards.

 So, you were watching the <a href="/topics/Emmy_Awards">Emmys</a> at home and probably wondering how host <a href="/topics/Jimmy_Fallon">Jimmy Fallon</a> could go from looking like <a href="/topics/Elton_John">Elton John</a> at a piano one moment to impersonating a guitar-slinging <a href="/topics/Green_Day">Green Day</a> frontman <a href="/topics/Billie_Joe_Armstrong">Billie Joe Armstrong</a> the next. As <a href="/topics/Jimmy_Fallon">Fallon</a> paid tribute in song parody to such bygone programs as “24,” “Law &amp; Order” and “Lost,” a cadre of women was standing nearby, waiting to literally rip one costume off him, revealing another underneath. When he was done, the Nokia Theatre orchestra broke into a version of <a href="/topics/David_Bowie">David Bowie</a>’s “Fame.” 
But how did Fallon navigate, guitar-in-hand, through a darkened Nokia Theatre to perform his comedy song segments throughout the three-hour show? Simple. He had a guy with a little flashlight guide him around. 
Fallon’s opening musical number slayed the theatre audience, which went wild as his makeshift “Glee” club explosively appeared on stage, with a special cameo by guitar-playing “<a href="/topics/American_Idol">American Idol</a>” judge <a href="/topics/Randy_Jackson">Randy Jackson</a> to perform an amped-up parody of <a href="/topics/Bruce_Springsteen">Bruce Springsteen</a>’s “Born to Run.” Then came a little bump in the road when Fallon’s next comedy bit, reading what were supposed to be funny tweets delivered by Twitter-using viewers, fell flat. Fortunately, he quickly returned to the guitar. &nbsp; 
<a href="/topics/Ricky_Gervais">Ricky Gervais</a> is no <a href="/topics/Oprah_Winfrey">Oprah Winfrey</a>, but at least he tried. After Gervais joked that the more uptight Emmys could benefit from letting the booze flow a bit more freely, like they do at the <a href="/topics/Golden_Globe_Awards">Golden Globe Awards</a>, a handful of servers showed up with free beer. Unfortunately, there was only enough to go to the first few rows. Anyone else who wanted a beer had to dash to the lobby during a commercial and shell out $10.75. 
One of the best things about watching the Emmys from inside the Nokia Theatre is not having to sit through commercials. Instead, the audience is treated to clips of particularly funny and charming past Emmy acceptance speeches. One of them this year was the classic clip of <a href="/topics/Lucille_Ball">Lucille Ball</a> fumbling about without her glasses and then be rescued by <a href="/topics/Milton_Berle">Milton Berle</a>, who rushed onstage. 
Will the real <a href="/topics/Amy_Poehler">Amy Poehler</a> please rush back to her seat. The star of “Parks and Recreation” got so caught up mingling with her former “<a href="/topics/Saturday_Night_Live">Saturday Night Live</a>” cast members during a commercial break that she barely made it back to her camera-friendly front-row seat in time to trade with her seat filler. 
As <a href="/topics/David_Strathairn">David Strathairn</a> accepted his Emmy for supporting actor in a movie or miniseries for “<a href="/topics/Temple_Grandin">Temple Grandin</a>,” Jewel quietly took the stage off-camera with her guitar and had a moment alone in the darkness as she prepared to deliver “Shape of You” during her moving tribute to TV industry figures who died this past year. As their pictures flashed on the screen, Gary Coleman, <a href="/topics/Rue_McClanahan">Rue McClanahan</a> and <a href="/topics/Dennis_Hopper">Dennis Hopper</a> got the warmest rounds of applause from the theatre audience. 
Don’t get him wrong, <a href="/topics/George_Clooney">George Clooney</a> enjoyed that joke scene during the Emmys that put him in bed with Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, who play the gay couple on “Modern Family.” But it was good “to talk about things that matter,” <a href="/topics/George_Clooney">Clooney</a> said backstage after accepting the Television Academy’s <a href="/topics/Bob_Hope">Bob Hope</a> Humanitarian Award. The trophy was delivered to him by <a href="/topics/Julianna_Margulies">Julianna Margulies</a>, his love interest on “ER.” 
After Eric Stonestreet won the Emmy for supporting actor in a comedy, his “Modern Family” co-stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ty Burrell and <a href="/topics/Julie_Bowen">Julie Bowen</a> were there to reward him with an old-fashioned group hug. Jane <a href="/topics/Jane_Lynch">Lynch</a> and <a href="/topics/Stephen_Colbert">Stephen Colbert</a> experienced a different kind of physicality, however, after <a href="/topics/Stephen_Colbert">Colbert</a> presented Lynch with her Emmy for supporting actress in a comedy. The pair had to be chased down and grabbed by a statuesque Emmy wrangler when they exited the stage the wrong way. 
The upset of the night, as far as the Nokia Theatre audience was concerned, was when the Bravo channel’s “<a href="/topics/Top_Chef">Top Chef</a>” wrestled the best reality show Emmy away from “<a href="/topics/The_Amazing_Race">The Amazing Race</a>,” which had won it seven years in a row. The most surprised people in the audience? Perhaps the show’s co-host <a href="/topics/Padma_Lakshmi">Padma Lakshmi</a> and judge Gail Simmons, who had to race through the audience to meet their colleagues on stage. 
<a href="/topics/Bryan_Cranston">Bryan Cranston</a> and his “<a href="/topics/Breaking_Bad">Breaking Bad</a>” co-star Aaron Paul may have pulled a one-two sweep of the best actor and best supporting actor awards for drama series, but they got stuck with just about the worst seats in the Nokia Theatre. The two were seated at the far right end of the stage, directly in front of the orchestra. The cast members of “Glee” had the best seats, center stage. 
Many Emmy winners don’t want to turn loose of their hard-earned awards. Not Jim Parsons who collected the lead actor in a comedy series award for “<a href="/topics/The_Big_Bang_Theory">The Big Bang Theory</a>.” “I take this with me?” Parsons asked as he arrived at the backstage trophy table to collect his real Emmy, not the one they hand out in front of the cameras. Asked how he planned to celebrate when he got that Emmy home, Parsons said, “Maybe I’ll have ice cream.” 
Inside the Nokia Theatre lobby minutes before showtime, it was chaos. You couldn’t hear the audio being piped in from the red carpet outside because of the crush of chatty attendees schmoozing. “Please make your way into the theater!” a security guard finally barked. 
Just outside, the lobby’s men’s room, “The Amazing Race” host <a href="/topics/Phil_Keoghan">Phil Keoghan</a> was wolfing down a bag of popcorn while <a href="/topics/Seth_Meyers">Seth Meyers</a> of “Saturday Night Live” was fidgeting with his smartphone as the show was about to begin. Across the way, <a href="/topics/Lauren_Graham">Lauren Graham</a> fiddled with her hexagon-shaped purse as she mingled with the crowd. <a href="/topics/Kevin_McHale">Kevin McHale</a> from “Glee” chatted with “Dexter” co-stars <a href="/topics/James_Remar">James Remar</a> and <a href="/topics/C.S._Lee">C.S. Lee</a>. 
 Inside the theatre, Terry O’Quinn from “Lost” and <a href="/topics/Kate_Gosselin">Kate Gosselin</a> from “Kate Plus 8” were finding their seats while others stood to watch the last of the red carpet scene as it was broadcast on large television screens. “Turn that prompter towards me. Thank you,” <a href="/topics/Billy_Bush">Billy Bush</a> could be heard barking during a commercial break. 
A little more than three hours later, it was time to clean up, as Jimmy Fallon’s attempt to douse the audience with a farewell champagne spritz fell short and mainly just soaked the camera guy positioned below him.

The view from inside the Emmy Awards

Hi all. Sorry for the looooong break ,but I'm baaaack and (pleasantries thus dispensed) let's get down to business. 
The Emmys. The Primetime Awards telecast is this Sunday on NBC, so excuse me if I seem a little one-track this week. But this past Saturday, the Creative Awards were handed out, and they are hugely important too. 
Creative essentially refers to the craft awards, from make-up to sound and on and on.&nbsp;The Academy splits 'em off from the main awards to avoid making the telecast 10 hours long. 
Big winner Saturday was "The Pacific," with seven awards. Absolutely no surprise there. "Pacific" earned multiple noms in several categories, and in one -- Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Miniseries or a Movie -- it got all four nominations. "The Pacific" was great and deserves everything it earned and more; a total of 24 nominations, and the big one -- best miniseries -- is a certainty. 
Meanwhile, &nbsp;outstanding guest actress in a drama series went to Ann-Margret for NBC’s "Law &amp; Order: Special Victims Unit;" outstanding guest actress in a comedy series went to Betty White for NBC’s "Saturday Night Live;" outstanding guest actor in a drama series went to John Lithgow for Showtime’s "Dexter," and outstanding guest actor in a comedy series went to Neil Patrick Harris for Fox's "Glee." 
All of these were 100 percent deserved, though I can't say I recall seeing the Ann-Margret guest-role; did you know -- I didn't -- that AM has been nominated&nbsp;five times, and this is her first win?
