Black Poetry Day Celebration
The Black Poetry Day celebration kicks off the launch of Celebrating Jupiter: An Anthology of Poems by Black Poets on Long Island, which will be published soon. The program will include a special presentation by Mr. Williford to commemorate Jupiter Hammon's birthday. Hammon, who was born on October 17, 1711. Hammon was enslaved by the Lloyd family in Lloyd Harbor, Suffolk County, Long Island. Hammon became the first published Black poet in the United States with his 1761 poem “An Evening Thought.”
