 Englishman <a href="/topics/Robert_Williams">Robert Williams</a> purchased more than 5,500 acres of <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> land from the <a href="/topics/Matinecock%2C_NY">Matinecock</a> Indians in 1648, not realizing the history he was setting in motion. 
 The area was known as the Williams Estate until 1836 when settlers and captains of industry gave it a new name, Hicksville. James Janis, 47, of <a href="/topics/Malverne%2C_NY">Malverne</a>, the hamlet’s historian, said the then <a href="/topics/Long_Island_Rail_Road">Long Island Rail Road</a> chief Valentine Hicks named the area after himself when the <a href="/topics/LIRR">LIRR</a> line ended in Hicksville after the railroad ran out of money to expand. 
 “The best way to define Hicksville is really two ways. It’s really a series of immigrations of people coming for business opportunities and later on a place for people looking for a nice place to live,” he said. Janis has been the hamlet historian for four years but studied its history for nearly a decade. “Hicksville never really figured out what it wanted to be. It always seems to be tearing itself in two directions that way.” 
 Over the next 175 years Hicksville saw the rise and fall of the “gold beating” form of jewelry making, the opening and closing of the Heinz pickle factory and the construction and expansion of Broadway, Hicksville’s downtown stretch. 
 Hicksville’s population comprises diversity and multiple generations. Sharon Holzapple, 54, of Hicksville is responsible for accounts payable at the Hicksville Public Library business office. A hamlet resident of 51 years, she remembers Hicksville before <a href="/topics/Oyster_Bay%2C_NY">Oyster Bay</a> officials widened Broadway and before many of the ethnic businesses opened their doors. 
 “Culturally it has changed. It went from the mom-and-pop stores to now it’s all over the world,” Holzapple said. “[Hicksville’s] original movie theater, it was a single-screen movie theater that we all went to. Then it was an Indian movie theater, and now it’s a school and a church.” 
 The 1961 widening of Broadway is a sore topic for many longtime residents. Holzapple said that the process destroyed many of the mom-and-pop shops and the “hometown feel” of Hicksville. 
 Firefighter, EMT and library maintenance worker Pat Dammes, 60, said her favorite chocolate malt shop was lost in the widening. She also said she’s seen the diversity in Hicksville expand very quickly. 
 “The other day [while working with the fire department], the dispatcher said, ‘There’s a language barrier,’" she said. One of the firefighters in the house offered their interpreter’s services, but to no avail. “The dispatcher said, ‘It’s not Spanish.’” 
 Hicksville has long been the landing place for new cultures, according to Janis. While it was originally an English settlement, after the Civil War many soldiers made their way out to the island and settled down in the hamlet. <a href="/topics/World_War_II">World War II</a> had a similar impact taking the population from about 4,000 people in 1941 to about 8,000 in 1945, according to Janis. The fallout of the two wars brought in many Irish and German families. In the 1950s a real estate boom on newly vacant farmland helped the population jump again from 8,000 to 40,000 and began drawing in Middle Eastern cultures. Today, there are several Indian, Chinese and Thai businesses in the hamlet’s downtown, including The New Curry and Chilli Restaurant. 
 “I enjoy mixing the two cultures [American and Indian],” said Sanumyan Varee Pratan, one of the restaurant’s owners. She moved to Hicksville to be surrounded by friends from <a href="/topics/Thailand">Thailand</a> and <a href="/topics/India">India</a> who had adopted American culture while keeping some Indian traditions. 
 “In <a href="/topics/India">India</a> we are very loving, but there’s too much pampering. Here you are out after 21. We say, ‘Let them go but with love.’” &nbsp;

Hicksville Focus: Hamlet tells its story

Young students in the after-school program at Martial Arts America recited, “. . . I will develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and in others" at the command of instructor Rick Hellerer Tuesday afternoon. 
 Next week students at the Hicksville school will use that self-discipline to help feed the needy. 
 Students, ages 6 and younger,&nbsp; will be asked to perform 500 kicks each on Nov. 19 and, students, ages 7 through 13,&nbsp; will be asked to perform 1,000 each as part of the school’s annual Thanksgiving Basket Brigade. School owner Michael Donohue has set a goal of 50,000 kicks for the event. 
 Each student is responsible for obtaining sponsorship either by receiving a pledged amount for each kick they do or a flat donation for the whole event. The school has each student make one basket -- filled with non-perishable items needed to make a Thanksgiving dinner -- and asks parent volunteers to come to the school at 300 South Broadway the week before Thanksgiving to help make them. They will be donated to the social services center at Saint Ignatius Loyola Parish In Hicksville. 
 “We want to teach our students to not only defend themselves, but be better members of the community,” said Donohue, who has been doing the Thanksgiving Basket Brigade for the past 15 years. 
 Christine Rogers, 39, of Hicksville, was at the school Tuesday while her daughters Michaela, 10, and Fiona, 8, were in a weapons-training class. 
 “They want to help with anything they can,” said Rogers of her daughters. “And I think self-defense gives them enough self-confidence that they can see the need to help others.” 
 Rogers was chatting with Maureen Aluotto, 40, of Levittown, about helping to make the baskets. Aluotto enrolled daughter Jennifer Daly, 12, in the school because it was recommended by her doctor for Jennifer’s Asperger syndrome, a form of autism. According to her mom, martial arts training has helped Jennifer become focused, coordinated and confident enough to deal with kids who picked on her in school. Now she’ll use karate to help others through the Thanksgiving Basket Brigade. 
 “I think it's fantastic,” Aluotto said. “It’s nice because you’re not just here for karate, but you’re doing nice things for the public.”

Hicksville Focus: 50,000 kicks for the needy

In the center of a peculiar loop in eastern Hicksville sits a 19th century building that has served the hamlet in the most disparate of ways. 
 The Hicksville Gregory Museum is home to thousands of fossils and minerals from all over the world, as well as artifacts from Hicksville. Open six days a week, the building itself is a local artifact. 
 “It’s a great town,” said Don Curran, 61, of Freeport, the museum’s curator for 23 years. “The people who live here and all around really care about it [the museum], and they can come here to enjoy it.” 
 The museum was named by Gardiner Gregory, a Hicksville schoolteacher and avid collector. Hundreds of his accumulated fossils, minerals, moths, wildflowers and butterflies fill the cases along the old building’s walls. He opened the original museum in 1963 in his home on Cottage Boulevard, but expanded into what was the Heitz Place Courthouse in 1969. He died in 2005 at the age of 88. 
 Curran’s earliest record of the building, owned by the Town of Oyster Bay, dates to 1895. The museum once served as Village Hall -- although Hicksville was never an incorporated village -- a jail and a courthouse. The jail’s first reported prisoner was housed there in November 1895, occupying a jail cell where a bathroom is today. He was tried for disorderly conduct in what is now the museum’s main exhibit area. 
 Curran doesn’t have any records of murders or other heinous crimes from back then, but there were other interesting incidents. One story involves a horse thief who was caught after he stole a neighbor’s horse and used it to pull his carriage down Broadway. Many of the other crimes were alcohol-induced disorderly conduct and coin counterfeiting. 
 According to Curran, the building served as Village Hall until 1935, when it became the Fourth District Court. The court vacated the building in 1967. 
 Today Curran has accumulated thousands of new artifacts, like prehistoric sea creatures, fossilized dinosaur footprints from New Jersey and industrial-grade diamonds. The museum sees between 50 to 100 walk-in visitors each week and 100 to 200 people coming in scheduled groups. 
 “It’s an easy way for the people who live around here to see something they’d have to travel into the city to see,” he said.

 As I wrap up Newsday’s "Town Focus: Hicksville," I have several more stories coming today and Saturday. 
 Yesterday I spent some time with Don Curran, the curator of the Hicksville Gregory Museum, above, learning all I could about the 100-year-old building, a former courthouse. My look at a Hicksville couple enjoying and contributing to the hamlet's diversity is coming later today, along with a Veterans Day story that starts off in Hicksville and goes all the way to the Pentagon. 
 We'll finish things off with the story of Hicksville, as told by its residents.

Town Focus: A Week in Hicksville, Day 5

Kumar Chhetri and his wife, Sanumyan Varee Pratan, moved to Hicksville three years ago to start a restaurant because they were attracted to the cultural mix and accepting community. They opened New Chilli &amp; Curry Restaurant on Woodbury Road on Mother’s Day 2008. 
 “We thought it was a good day because every culture loves their mother,” said Chhetri, 52. 
 Their sense of culture has driven not only their decision to move to Hicksville, but the theme of their eatery. New Chilli &amp; Curry serves Chinese, Thai and Indian food and has decor to match. Hanging on the wall over the entrance to the dining room is a photo of the <a href="/topics/Dalai_Lama">Dalai Lama</a>, a spiritual leader of Buddhism. A mix of Indian, Chinese and Thai music fills the restaurant with ambient sound. 
 Varee Pratan, 42, said the couple and many of their Indian friends were drawn to the hamlet because of friends and family there, and she liked how other Indian residents meshed traditions with American culture. 
 “I enjoy mixing the two cultures [American and Indian],” she said, highlighting that in <a href="/topics/India">India</a> families often stay together in the same house for multiple generations. “In <a href="/topics/India">India</a> we are very loving, but there’s too much pampering. Here you are out after 21. We say, ‘Let them go but with love.’” 
 Customer William Geiger, 54, of Hicksville stops in once a week with his significant other, Elizabeth Squires, 46. The two often venture out to try new foods, and Geiger said he has come to trust the owners to the point of trying a goat dish the next time he visits. 
 “We were first drawn to Kumar and Sanaam's [the name Sanumyan goes by] genuine warmth, and that was followed up with delicious food,” said Geiger of the Chhetris, who make it a point to chat with all of their customers to create a family <a href="/topics/Atmosphere_%28musician%29">atmosphere</a>. 
 Varee Pratan said she and her husband run the restaurant with family in mind and hope they can integrate some Indian cultural values into American families the way their American customers have rubbed off on them. 
 “In here you have kids sitting between parents and they’re on their iPads,” she said, laughing. “In <a href="/topics/India">India</a> we talk to each other at dinner. We say, ‘How was your day?’ We want that for our customers in here.”

Hicksville Focus: Cultures mix at eatery

My colleague Erin Geismar and I had dinner last night at the <a href="http://long-island.newsday.com/restaurants/new-chilli-curry-restaurant-1.856254">New Chilli &amp; Curry</a> on Woodbury Road. We learned first-hand why Indian food is so popular and why the owners, Kumar Chhetri and Sanumyan Varee Pratan, were drawn to Hicksville three-and-a-half years ago. 
 Today I am planning to visit the <a href="http://long-island.newsday.com/things-to-do/museums/hicksville-gregory-museum-1.811040">Hicksville Gregory Museum</a>, a former courthouse turned science museum.

Town Focus: A Week in Hicksville, Day 4

Levittown's Patti Brownstone, 51, is a real estate agent who has been selling Hicksville properties for eight years. She was having lunch Wednesday at Broadway Mall with her mother-in-law, Marsha Greene, 77, of <a href="/topics/Farmingdale%2C_NY">Farmingdale</a>, when she answered questions about her experience in Hicksville. 
 Q: What are some observations you've made about the Hicksville community? 
 Brownstone: It's a very mixed community. It’s a very nice place to live and has good shopping. 
 Q: Why are people buying in Hicksville? 
 Brownstone: A lot of the attraction is the commuting into the city. I think the younger couples out here buy their first home so I think they're thinking about the easy commute. And the taxes here are lower than the surrounding area, so people looking to downsize are drawn here.

People of Hicksville: Patti Brownstone

Hicksville resident Joseph Bargiuk, 71, has lived in the hamlet since 1950. A lot has changed for him in the last 61 years, including his political views. Newsday caught up with him Tuesday while he voted at Old Country Road Middle School. 
 How has Hicksville changed in your time here? Bargiuk: It changed a lot. There used to only be two schools. Now there's more and a lot more crime. I saw the roads change too. 
 Are there any changes about Hicksville you like? Bargiuk: I used to work with my father in construction where I was a cement mason. I did [worked on widening] Newbridge Road back in 1980. I like that that they made the roads wider but, of course, now there's more traffic. 
 Why have you stayed in Hicksville so long? Bargiuk: I have no idea. My family and friends were here . . . they’re gone now. 
 What are you thinking about when you go to the polls? Bargiuk: Well, basically they [pundits] talk about Obamacare and property taxes. I voted all Republican. I used to be a Democrat, I’ll never vote Democrat again.

Sharon Holzapple, who is responsible for accounts payable at the Hicksville Public Library's business office, has lived in the hamlet for 51 years. She took a few minutes to talk about life in Hicksville then and now: 
 Q: What was it like growing up in Hicksville? 
 Holzapple: Not as busy. It was like small-town living. I remember Broadway before they widened it and Newbridge Road before they widened it. 
 Q: What was school like back then? 
 Holzapple: There were all the little different grade schools. Junior high was grades 7, 8 and 9 and then high school was 10, 11, and 12. My graduating class was 1,200 kids. Now it’s around 300 and they say they’re overcrowded. 
 Q: How has Hicksville changed in your time here? 
 Holzapple: Culturally it’s changed. It went from the mom-and-pop stores to now it’s all over the world. We had the original movie theater, it was a single-screen movie theater that we all went to. Then it was an Indian movie theater, and now it’s a school and a church. 
 Q: Is there anything you’d like to see restored that has changed? 
 Holzapple: I would like the mom-and-pop stores back. You just got personalized service and they knew you and you knew them. Like the 5 and 10, there’s no 5 and 10s anymore. Hicksville is really a commuter town now. I really miss that hometown feeling.

Joseph Reinhardt Jr., 69, has lived in Hicksville more on than off since 1941. The registered Republican stopped by Old Country Road Middle School to cast his vote for Oyster Bay’s future leaders and answered some questions about his life in the hamlet. 
 What issues are you thinking about in the voting booth today? Reinhardt: Obviously I guess everybody would say property taxes. The other is the revitalization of downtown Hicksville. It has really become a primary parking spot since they widened Broadway and never finished the job. 
 What was it like growing up in Hicksville? Reinhardt: It was really neat. I remember having to get my errands done before 1 p.m. because at 1 p.m. a freight train with about 100 cars would roll through the middle of town and you couldn’t get from one side to the other. It would take the train three quarters of an hour to pass and I remember the guy that operated the gates only had one leg. 
 When you think about how Hicksville has changed, what’s the first thing that pops in your head? Reinhardt: Traffic. That just jumps in my head. The whole island is ridiculous. 
 What’s one change in Hicksville that you enjoy? Reinhardt: (Pauses for a while) -- I'm still here, I must like something, right? The people. I used to call them the LTHR, longtime Hicksville residents 
 What’s one change you’d like to undo here in Hicksville? Reinhardt: There’s not enough empty land. I don’t know how the water stays clean with all of the concrete. 
 How did you vote today? Reinhardt: I am registered Republican but I vote Independent. I voted for Rose Walker because it's funny -- revitalization is a primary thing but also if I see her walking down the street I know I can approach her. She has the people of Hicksville at heart. &nbsp;

Pat Dammes, 60, is a maintenance worker at the Hicksville Public Library and a volunteer with the Hicksville Fire Department. Three generations of her family live in the hamlet. 
 Q: What was it like growing up in Hicksville? 
 Dammes: I liked growing up in Hicksville. But it was very different. A lot of open land. 
 Q: What was school like back then? 
 Dammes: There were so many kids that they didn’t have enough room. 
 Q: How has Hicksville changed in your time here? 
 Dammes: There’s a lot more traffic, and culturally there have been big changes. The other day [while working with the fire department], the dispatcher said, “There’s a language barrier.” One of the firefighters said, “I have an interpreter here,” and the dispatcher said, “It’s not Spanish.”

 Dammes: The parks, I really like the parks we have. There were some parks before, but they aren’t what they are now. It’s nice to have for the kids. When the kids are playing, they’re full. And it’s not just the kids; it’s the families. It’s very family-oriented, as far as, everyone comes out to watch. It’s very sporty. It’s always been that way and I hope it always stays that way.

 For my third day in Hicksville I am all over the place. I am hoping to meet with an 85-year-old resident who has lived in the same house in the hamlet his whole life. He has seen everything from the suburbanization of farmland to the widening of Broadway, a sore topic with everyone I’ve spoken to on the subject. 
 Also, be on the lookout for a story at some point this week about the Sweet Shop, which has excellent chocolate ice cream and egg creams, by the way. I sat down with owner Phil Zouros, who has been the shop’s owner since 1974. He went through its history with me, and I even had the opportunity to sit down with one young man who was enjoying his first-ever root beer float. 
 I’m also hoping to catch up with some Indian restaurant owners and find out why Hicksville is good for their businesses.

Town Focus: A Week in Hicksville, Day 3

 In the eight short hours I spent in Hicksville yesterday, I learned quite a bit about what locals enjoy and dislike about the hamlet. I got an update on renovations for a Hicksville puppet theater and saw first-hand the community’s diversity just by sitting in the library. 
 Today I’ll be visiting local polling places to find out what Hicksvillians (a term coined by Hicksville historian James Janis) are thinking about when they cast their ballots. Are locals thinking about the reconstruction of the municipal parking garage or downtown revitalization when they elect town officials? What other issues linger in their minds? In this economy, do party lines matter?

Town Focus: A Week in Hicksville, Day 2

This week, for the second installment of our “Town Focus” series, community journalist T.C. McCarthy will be embedded in the hamlet of Hicksville. 
 The town of about 41,500 people is widely known for its <a href="/topics/Long_Island_Rail_Road">Long Island Rail Road</a> station. In fact, the town is named after Valentine Hicks, the second president of the <a href="/topics/LIRR">LIRR</a>, who helped establish the station in 1837. It is now one of the busiest stops in the system. 
 But it there’s a lot more to it, including some shopping malls, a culturally diverse array of restaurants and other attractions like the Hicksville Gregory Museum and the <a href="/topics/Long_Island%2C_NY">Long Island</a> Reptile Museum and Expo.
