Nassau football top 10

"You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream," — "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry.

Yup, we're going there this week, high school football bloggers.

Katy Perry may not be welcome alongside Elmo on Sesame Street, but the pop princess will always be a staple of the High School football playlist.  

And let's be honest, isn't it every teenage football player's dream to be having the kind of season Tyler Heuer (pictured) and Oceanside are having? After convincing wins over Syosset and East Meadow, the preseason No. 2 and 5 seeds (Oceanside was No. 4), the Sailors are the talk of the Island.

As for Heuer, the senior QB broke a school record held by Jay Fiedler, who played nine NFL seasons with the Dolphins, Vikings, Eagles and Jets, with six TD passes in a 48-7 demolition of East Meadow on Saturday. He certainly is living a teenage dream so far this season, with 890 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

So for the second straight week we're doing things "Bottom 10" style, courtesy of Miss Perry.

Two of these teams (Farmingdale, at No. 19, and Freeport, at No. 22) were worthy of entrance into MSG Varsity's tri-state football poll. None have garnered acceptance into Gregg Sarra's Big 10. Oceanside is in the "outside looking in" category, and I'm 99.9 percent sure that a win over Farmingdale on Friday night will finally put them over the hump. Although it won't be an easy task against a Dalers squad that should be 4-0.

The Sailors, the top scoring team on Long Island with 172 points (43 per game), are one of seven undefeated teams remaining in Nassau (and the only one in Conference I). A maximum of five will get to 5-0, as Carey visits Wantagh and Lynbrook plays host to Hewlett on Saturday. More on those teams in just a bit.

But without further ado, let's check out this week's Nassau top 10, Katy Perry style...

1. Oceanside (4-0, Conference I): As we said, Tyler Heuer and the Sailors are living a teenage dream. The senior QB led the Sailors to their first 4-0 start since 1977 (the year of their last county title) by completing 13 of 18 passes for 297 yards and a school-record six touchdown passes in a 48-7 win over previously undefeated East Meadow at home on Saturday. Receiver Gene Garay caught five passes for 139 yards and two scores, and Chris Hughes had four receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. 2.  Farmingdale (3-1, Conference I): "Don't ever look back, don't ever look back..."  Ever since the heartbreaking loss to East Meadow it's been all forward thinking for the Dalers. They won their second straight on the road on Friday with a 36-22 decision over Uniondale. Farmingdale trailed 15-14 at the half and was tied at 22 after three quarters, but Kevin Wahl's 59-yard touchdown with 8:02 to play gave the Dalers the lead for good. Wahl finished the day with 159 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, and he also caught three passes for 71 yards and a score.

3. Freeport (3-1, Conference I): "I finally found you, my missing puzzle piece..." Welcome to the party, Maurice Irby. After getting overshadowed by his senior counterpart Dan Olivier the first three weeks, the junior running back had his coming out party in a 41-14 win at Massapequa on Saturday with 143 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Olivier amassed 174 yards on the ground on 14 carries with a touchdown, and had a 31-yard scoring reception.

Up next: At Syosset (2-2) at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

4.  Carey (4-0, Conference II): "I know you get me, so I let my walls come down..." The Seahawks' defense let its walls come down on Saturday, allowing a season-high 27 points at Bellmore JFK. But Carey countered with 45 of its own, including a four-touchdown day from senior quarterback Kyle Zahradka, who was 12-for-21 for 267 yards with one interception. Zahradka also rushed for 93 yards and a score on 11 carries. Juliano Bove caught four passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns. The defense will need to step up this week, as it travels to undefeated Wantagh.

5. Hewlett (4-0, Conference III): "You think I'm pretty without any makeup on..." The Bulldogs are a no frills kind of team. Just line up and play stout defense. On Friday night at Division, they held their fourth opponent to seven points or less in a 46-7 thumping of the Blue Dragons. Hewlett has outscored its opponents 150-21 in seven halves of football (its Week 2 game against Great Neck North was ended at haltime due to inclement weather). Alex Kahn threw for 72 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another 41 and a score, while the defense forced three turnovers.

6. Lynbrook (4-0, Conference III): "We can dance until we die..." Quarterback Paul Magloire and tailback Travis Lock can dance around defenses with the best of them, and that continued on Friday night with a methodical 35-0 drubbing of Manhasset. Lock rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, while Magloire ran 16 times for 156 yards. The QB also was 8-for-10 passing for 79 yards and a score.

7. Seaford (4-0, Conference IV): "You and I, we'll be young forever..." The Vikings sure have a feeling of invincibility in Conference IV. Saturday in Malverne, they earned a 29-0 victory over the Mules to extend their conference winning streak to 36 games (they have won 16 overall). Justin Buckley rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. A matchup with Roosevelt looms on Oct. 22.

8.  Wantagh (4-0, Conference II): "Before you met me things were alright..." The Warriors defense is introducing itself to the rest of the conference, as Saturday's 22-0 win at New Hyde Park was its second straight shutout. Wantagh has allowed just 19 points on the season. Saturday, Mike Scully rushed for 104 yards on 16 carries, while John Reicherter had four catches for 79 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for another 48.

9. Garden City (3-1, Conference II): "You think I'm funny when I tell the punch line wrong..." The Trojans think it's funny when people say they aren't the class of Conference II after a loss to Carey two weeks ago. They bounced back from the setback with a 43-6 win at Long Beach on Saturday in which Stephen Jahelka scored three rushing touchdowns. Things don't get easier with Elmont and Wantagh coming to town the next three weeks.

10. Roosevelt (4-0, Conference IV): "...and built a fort out of sheets..." The Rough Riders nearly lost their undefeated status because they couldn't guard their fort for most of a 28-20 overtime win at Floral Park on Saturday. But when they needed it most, Frank Ilozue came up with a fourth-and-goal sack that ended the game. Erin Parker rushed for the game-winning touchdown and subsequent two-point conversion in overtime to provide the final margin. Donte Colter rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries.
