Nassau police are deploying surveillance cameras, license plate readers and plainclothes officers near gas stations and convenience stores, but have no suspects or forensic evidence in a spate of armed robberies that included the Sunday evening gunpoint robbery of a Hicksville gas station, police officials said Monday.
Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said Monday that the thief -- who police believe is responsible for 11 armed robberies, mostly in Hicksville, Jericho and Westbury since Dec. 20, and the killing of a Jericho gas station attendant -- "hasn't left any forensic evidence."
"We're still aggressively investigating," Krumpter said Monday. "He's very concerning because he's already exhibited that he can be extremely violent. . . . We've deployed a significant amount of technology since the pattern emerged."
Asked if police have identified any suspects in the pattern, Krumpter said: "It's a fluid investigation. As we eliminate persons of interest, other people rise. You go from a person of interest, to a subject. . . . We don't have a subject at this point in time."
In the latest armed robbery in the pattern -- the first in 26 days -- a man armed with a handgun entered the Applegreen gas station, 118 Newbridge Rd., and demanded cash from a male employee about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
The robbery, which was captured on the store's surveillance cameras, showed the gunman wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, navy blue sweatpants with a white stripe on the legs, gloves and a black bandanna covering his face, police said. He fled on foot with an unspecified amount of cash.
In an attempted robbery of a BP gas station in Jericho on Jan. 28, also believed to be part of the pattern, the suspect shot to death a clerk, Hany Awad, 56, of Levittown, police said.
Frank Sadiqi, manager of the Applegreen, said Monday that the employee who was working at the time was unhurt and the station has reopened.
"The guy gave the robber the money," Sadiqi said. "Thank God he's safe. He wasn't hurt."
The culprit has been described as a 20- to 25-year-old man about 5 feet, 11 inches tall, who usually wears all black, including gloves and a face mask.
"The police, they've been in the area," Sadiqi said. "We were aware to take precautions. They told us in the past to be careful. We basically listened."
Asked if police did enough to protect the station in light of the pattern, Sadiqi said: "We have enough patrols. We have the best police in the state, no? I really do think that. They're very, very good police. We're very well protected."

Nassau police said they are searching for an armed man they believe robbed a Hicksville gas station Sunday night.
The robbery occurred at the Applegreen Gas Station, 118 Newbridge Rd., at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nassau police said. 
Police said a man, armed with a handgun, entered the gas station and demanded money from a male employee. The suspect fled on foot with cash, headed west on West Nicholai Street.
Police said no injuries were reported and said anyone with information could call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.

Nassau police investigate Hicksville gas station robbery

Nassau County offered a reward of up to $35,000 Friday for information leading to the arrest of the man suspected in a string of 10 armed robberies during the past three months at local gas stations, including one in which the clerk was killed.
"Our resolve is intact. It has not diminished. We are going to catch this guy," Chief of Detectives Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police Department said at a news conference. He spoke at the BP Gas Station on Jericho Turnpike in Jericho, where clerk Hany Awad, 56, was fatally shot during a robbery on Jan. 28.
Smith and other officials stood in front of a mobile billboard that asks the public for help. It will be driven through the county in an effort to reach anyone who has not heard about the robberies from newspapers, television and other news sources.
"Hopefully, going up and down the streets, people . . . will see this billboard," Smith said.
The suspect is a man between 20 and 25 years old, 5-foot-11 to 6 feet, with a thin build, wearing all-black clothing -- including Nike sneakers with red laces -- a black mask and black gloves.
Smith said Crime Stoppers paid for the billboard and is offering up to $10,000 for information about the robberies and $25,000 for information in Awad's slaying. The Crime Stoppers hotline is 800-244-8477.
The first of the robberies took place at the Citgo Gas Station in Westbury on Dec. 20. The most recent was Feb. 8 at the Shell Gas Station on Jericho Turnpike in Jericho.
The suspect uses either a black or silver revolver, Smith said.
The wanted poster reads: "Subject entered all locations confronting victims at gunpoint while making verbal demands for money. Victims fearing physical injury complied. Subject takes Newport cigarettes before fleeing on foot."

Nassau County police have identified "persons of interest" in a spate of unsolved armed robberies they say are connected to a holdup in which a Jericho gas station attendant was fatally shot.
The string has prompted the department to increase patrols and review video surveillance in an attempt to crack the case considered a top priority by police brass.
The identities of the persons of interest were cultivated through tips from the public and the department's team of intelligence analysts, who comb through internal databases of prior offenders. Police would not identify how many such people they have zeroed in on, but Chief of Department Steven Skrynecki said at least some had already been eliminated as suspects.
At a department meeting of top commanders at police headquarters in Mineola Thursday, Skrynecki said investigators have received several tips in the case and patrol cops have been directed to focus on the pattern, which he called the department's "highest priority."
"I can't overemphasize the fact that there's about 2,000 cops on this job and 2,000 people better be aware of what's going on with this pattern and be 'Johnny on the spot' with this," Skrynecki said to the assembled command staff. "Nothing is more important right now than getting that individual or individuals."
Wednesday's armed robbery of a Sunoco gas station in East Meadow is believed to be connected to nine other robberies since Dec. 20 as well as the slaying in Jericho last month. The East Meadow robbery indicates a change in strategy by the suspect, who had previously targeted gas stations and convenience stores in Hicksville, Jericho and Westbury, police said. A Citgo station and a Mobil station in Westbury and a 7-Eleven store in Hicksville were each hit twice.
"Now we have to concern ourselves: This could occur anywhere in the county," Skrynecki said. "That is obviously concerning to me and should be concerning to everybody, that this individual is pushing out -- don't know whether he's pushing out a little bit because of our uptick in resource deployment into the areas that he has been in or for some other reason, but it's going to make our mission even more challenging."
On Jan. 28, Jericho gas station attendant Hany Awad was found fatally shot. Investigators believe it was a botched robbery attempt, probably committed by the same person who did the 10 armed robberies, but they won't say whether any money was taken.
Police have described the suspect as a 20- to 25-year-old man, about 5-foot-11 and dressed in all black, including gloves and a face mask. He's brandished either a silver or black revolver -- possibly a "K" frame with a 2 1/2 inch barrel -- and worn black Nike sneakers with red laces in each holdup, police said. In some of the robberies, he's also stolen cigarettes, police said.
Major Case Bureau Insp. Keechant Sewell, who briefed Skrynecki, Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter and the other commanders during yesterday's meeting, said the department has seen a "notable increase in tips" since the announcement of a combined Crime Stoppers reward of $35,000 in the robberies and killing of Awad.
Investigators have conducted in-depth interviews with tipsters and witnesses and reviewed surveillance video, Sewell said.
"Every possible lead and avenue of investigation is being explored," Sewell said. "We are all well aware this problem is a priority of this department."

Nassau police eyeing persons of interest in string of armed gas station robberies

A gas station robbery early Wednesday in East Meadow fits the pattern of a series of armed robberies committed since December, including one in which a clerk was killed, Nassau police said Wednesday.
A police spokesman said the robbery at the Sunoco station at 2475 Hempstead Tpke. at about 1:40 a.m. appears to be similar to about a dozen others, mostly in the communities of Jericho, Hicksville and Westbury.
"It is likely connected to the robbery pattern, and we're investigating," said Nassau police Insp. Kenneth Lack, a department spokesman.
In a news conference this month Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter had called catching the suspect committing the robberies "among the highest priorities of this department at this time." The department has increased patrols near gas stations and convenience stores and is offering a reward for the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
In Wednesday's robbery, the suspect brandished a black handgun and took an unspecified amount of cash before getting away. Two employees were in the station at the time and were not injured.

Last month in Suffolk, a Medford couple was charged in a monthlong string of holdups, including 13 armed robberies of fast-food restaurants, gas stations and other businesses.
Also last month, Suffolk detectives lying in wait arrested two men suspected in another string of robberies since December as one tried to hold up a Blue Point doughnut shop, police said. One of the men had been under surveillance.

Police: East Meadow gas station holdup fits pattern of holdups, including fatal shooting in Jericho

The killing of a gas station attendant in Jericho last month was likely the work of the same man responsible for nine armed robberies of gas stations and convenience stores in Nassau since December, Acting Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said Tuesday. 
The department has "significantly increased" police patrols near the businesses as a result, Krumpter said at a news conference at police headquarters in Mineola. He asked for the public's help in cracking the case. No arrests have been made. 
Krumpter said the linkage between several other robberies and the Jan. 28 killing of gas station attendant Hany Awad -- investigators previously said they were unsure -- "raised the stakes and made it very concerning to this department." 
Catching the suspect "is among the highest priorities of this department at this time. . . . I would like to encourage the public, that if they see anything suspicious . . . that they immediately call 911." 
Since Dec. 9, 14 gas stations and convenience stores in Nassau have been held up, police said. 
Investigators believe nine holdups in Jericho, Hicksville and Westbury and the killing of Awad, 56, during a suspected botched robbery in Jericho, were committed by a 20- to 25-year-old man described as about 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and dressed in all black, including gloves and a face mask. He's brandished either a silver or black revolver and worn black Nike sneakers with red laces in each holdup, police said. 
In some of the linked armed robberies, the man stole cigarettes, police said. 
Two other robberies on Jan. 26, of BP gas stations in New Hyde Park and Thomaston, which occurred about 35 minutes apart, are not connected to the others, but likely the work of one assailant, Krumpter said. 
A Dec. 9 gas station robbery of a Shell in Bellerose Terrace, which was previously linked by investigators to the 10 identified as a pattern, is not connected, Krumpter said. 
The holdup of a Shell gas station Monday night in South Valley Stream by a masked man with a knife is not connected to any of the others, Krumpter said, because the assailant used a knife rather than a gun. 
The robberies have unnerved gas station workers, with one owner of a Mobil in Westbury saying he started locking the station's doors at nightfall, which has resulted in lost sales. 
Nassau County Crime Stoppers is offering $25,000 for the arrest and conviction of the assailant in Awad's murder and $10,000 for the robberies, said Krumpter. The toll free hotline is 800-244-8477. Callers can remain anonymous.

The suspect entered the station at 928 Rosedale Ave. at about 9:21 p.m., went behind the counter -- where the clerk was working -- and took a cash register drawer with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. 
The clerk, who was not injured, left the store and notified police as the suspect was taking the register drawer. 
The suspect fled westbound on Rosedale Road toward the Queens border, police said. 
No customers were in the station at the time of the robbery.

Nassau police are investigating 12 armed robberies of gas stations and a convenience store since December -- including three they suspect were each hit twice by the same assailant, according to documents. 
A separate investigation into the Jan. 28 shooting death of an attendant at a Jericho station is continuing. Police have not definitively concluded it occurred during a robbery, but have said it was a possibility. 
One owner whose Westbury Mobil station was held up twice said police have "stopped in a lot" since the robberies. 
Station owner Danny Persuad said that after the robberies, he increased safety measures, which caused a drop-off in customers. 
"It's hurting me, business-wise," Persuad said of the measures, which include locked station doors at night and only allowing purchases through a window. "People want to come in . . . but at the same time, my guys' safety is most important." 
No arrests have been made in the robberies or the killing of attendant Hany Awad. In each robbery, attendants have told police a single assailant showed a handgun and demanded money. 
Gas stations in Bellerose Terrace, Jericho, New Hyde Park, Thomaston and Westbury have been held up starting Dec. 9 through Sunday, as well as a Hicksville 7-Eleven store, according to authorities. 
One assailant is suspected in at least eight of those robberies, including the two at Persuad's station on Old Country Road, two more at a Westbury Citgo station on Union Avenue, and two at a Hicksville 7-Eleven on West John Street, police said. 
Two more recent gas stations robberies are also part of the investigation -- one Friday night at a Hess station on Jericho Turnpike in Westbury and another Sunday at a Shell station on Jericho Turnpike in Jericho, police have said. 
In a separate investigation, police have linked two Jan. 26 holdups that occurred 35 minutes apart at BP stations to a single assailant who fired a gun in both robberies, according to Crime Stoppers. 
No one was injured. 
The Sunday morning robbery, in which the thief took an "undetermined amount" of cash from the Shell station, mirrors the Friday night Hess station holdup but police have yet to link them. 
Amin Islam, 31, an employee at the Westbury Mobil station owned by Persuad, said he wasn't working during the robberies but said "if they come, I'll just give them whatever they want."

Nassau police are looking for a masked, gun-toting man who robbed a Jericho gas station Sunday morning -- the fifth armed robbery at a Nassau gas station in the last few weeks, police said. 
The latest robbery, in which the thief took an "undetermined amount" of cash from the Shell gas station at 460 Jericho Tpke. about 10:23 a.m., mirrors the armed robbery of a Hess gas station on Jericho Turnpike Friday night, police said. 
In both cases, a masked man of a similar description entered when no customers were in the store, displayed a silver handgun and fled with cash, police said. No one was hurt in either of the holdups. 
No arrests have been made in any of the robberies, including the Jan. 28 killing of a gas station attendant who was found shot behind the counter of a Jericho BP station in what police said was possibly a botched robbery. 
Hany Awad, 56, of Levittown, was shot once in the torso, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 
A police spokesman Sunday said he could not say whether all five of the recent robberies, stretching from Jan. 26 to Sunday, were connected. 
However, police have apparently connected two of the cases, issuing a Crime Stoppers bulletin last week for two armed robberies of BP gas stations just days before Awad's killing. 
On Jan. 26, a masked man fired a single shot into the counter of the BP station in New Hyde Park after demanding money. Thirty-five minutes later, a masked man of a similar description demanded cash and fired a shot into a wall inside the Thomaston BP station. 
A police spokesman said that in both cases the station attendant "delayed or refused" to turn over money. He would not say how much money was taken.

A gas station attendant was found fatally shot behind the counter of a BP station Wednesday night in Jericho -- possibly the result of a botched robbery connected to a pair of similar armed robberies earlier in the week, Nassau County police said Thursday.
Hany Awad, 56, of Levittown, was shot once in the torso, police said. He was discovered by a customer about 9:10 p.m. Wednesday "lying on the floor behind the counter" of the Jericho Turnpike station, said Insp. Kenneth Lack, a police spokesman. A Nassau ambulance medical technician pronounced Awad dead at the scene at 9:30 p.m., police said.
Lack said police are investigating whether the killing was linked to a pair of armed robberies of BP gas stations on Monday night in which a thief fired a gun without injuring anyone.
"It is distinctly possible this is related to the other cases," said Lack during an afternoon news briefing at police headquarters in Mineola, adding that the two Monday robberies "seem to be linked."
Lack said police are checking ballistics evidence from all three incidents, but he hedged on saying Awad's killing was a botched robbery. "It's certainly a possibility, but we can't say it definitively," Lack said.
Awad's family declined to comment. The Jericho gas station was closed Thursday and police were at the scene for most of the day.
In the first Monday robbery, a masked man fired a single shot into the counter of the BP station in New Hyde Park after demanding money.
Thirty-five minutes later, a masked man of a similar description demanded cash and fired a shot into a wall inside the Thomaston station.
Lack said in both cases the station attendant "delayed or refused" to turn over money. He would not say how much money was taken.
"We believe he fired the gun to make the victims go faster for money," Lack said.
Asked whether two men arrested by Suffolk police Thursday for allegedly robbing a gas station in Dix Hills earlier in the day might be connected to the Nassau cases, Lack said investigators were looking into it. Police are asking anyone with information about the homicide to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
Lack said Crime Stoppers' board has "generously increased" the reward from the standard $10,000 for unsolved homicides to $25,000. Awad's killing is Nassau's second homicide in 2015.

Nassau County police are investigating two armed robberies at BP Gas stations in New Hyde Park and Thomaston that occurred within less than an hour of each other on Monday night, as a winter storm raged through the region. 
Around 5:45 p.m., a male suspect with a black handgun entered the gas station at 1301 Jericho Tpke. in New Hyde Park and demanded cash from the male attendant, Third Squad detectives said. 
The man fired one round from the weapon into the counter before fleeing north on foot on Abraham Lane with an undetermined amount of cash, police said. There were no injuries reported, police said in a news release.
The suspect was described as about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 160 pounds, with his head and faced covered, police said. He was wearing dark gloves, a dark jacket and gray pants, they said.
In a separate robbery, a male suspect displayed a black handgun at a gas station located at 655 Northern Blvd. in Thomaston, near Great Neck, around 6:45 p.m. and demanded the male attendant to hand over cash from the register, police said. 
The suspect fired once into the wall, causing no injuries, and fled west on foot on Northern Boulevard with an undetermined amount of cash, police said. 
The man was described as about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 150 pounds, police said. He was wearing dark gloves, a dark jacket and a dark mask over his face, police said. 
Police are still investigating to see whether the two armed robberies are connected, a police spokeswoman said.
