The walk down an oft-traveled hallway in Malverne High School. The athletic department door that was left open. The administration officials that looked out of place in AD Michael Pelan’s office. 
 Football coach Kito Lockwood isn’t certain whether it was the last week of June or the first week of July, but he remembers almost everything else about the moment good fortune struck and sent a shiver through every small school football program across Long Island. 
 Malverne runs a comprehensive summer program for community youth and Lockwood was in the building because he supervises the physical education portion. Strolling past an office he’d walked by thousands of times, he glimpsed&nbsp;Josiah Brown and his mother, Denise, sitting with the administrators who handle enrollment. 
 “I had to take a few steps backward for a second look,” Lockwood said. “I wanted to make sure what I was seeing was really happening.” 
 Brown is a singular talent, one of the best players on Long Island and entering his final high school season before heading to Penn State where he will be a wide receiver and kick returner. He decided to transfer back to his home school district from Holy Trinity, where he’d helped the Titans win consecutive CHSFL AA titles. And his arrival has made already-formidable Malverne team potentially one for the ages. 
 The Mules last won the Nassau IV crown in 1991 and have never played for a Long Island championship.

 “I’ve known most of them my whole life,” Brown said of his Mules teammates. “I grew up playing with them. I liked the idea of playing one more season with them and helping them get the exposure they deserve. . . . Now the goal is to help them finish strong with an LIC.” 
 Lockwood, now in his 14th season as head coach, first heard the rumor Brown might transfer in a spring phone call from a football parent and he said “For a moment I thought ‘wow – is this really possible?’ but I’ve been around long enough to know rumors are rumors until they are real.” 
 Watching Brown at Malverne’s first practice?&nbsp;Things got real pretty fast. 
 “His speed is a game-changer,” Lockwood said of Brown, who was also the Catholic 100-meter and 200-meter champion. “You can’t teach speed. And he knows how to use it.”

 Brown had nearly 30 Division I scholarship offers. Coach Kirby Smart of national champion Georgia even arrived for an in-person visit at Holy Trinity by helicopter, touching down on the football field. 
 In the end, he opted for the Nittany Lions over finalists Georgia and Rutgers “because it was just the right fit,” he said. 
 Now he joins a Malverne team that already seemed poised for a breakthrough season. In the county’s winter seeding meeting, it was placed No. 2 in Nassau IV behind defending champion North Shore. 
 The Mules have been on a steady&nbsp;ascent since the end of a one-win 2019 season and now boasts the powerful two-way line play of senior Kevin Estime, Tristan Brunson, Hugh Wilkerson, Oliver Durisile and junior Aaron Munoz. Lockwood said of the Mules’ rise “the development of the line has been the biggest thing . . . they now have the size and the strength to everything we need them to do.” 
 Behind them are athletic playmakers like senior senior running back/defensive back Roy Brandon McLaughlin Jr., senior wideout/rover William Hartley and versatile quarterback/defensive back Chad Wesley. 
 And now they add Brown, who caught 21 passes for 425 yards and seven touchdowns in seven games with Holy Trinity. 
 “We were already a strong team and already thinking we could win the championship,” McLaughlin said. “He makes us that much more dangerous. (Defenses) will have to respect him and spread out the field&nbsp;. . . They’ll have to pick their poison – him or me.”

 Asked if one player can truly make a difference on any 11-man unit, Lockwood replied “Football is the ultimate team sport where everyone has to play a role and wants to be the ultimate teammate, but there is always the possibility one player can make a difference. . . . We have a lot of players capable of making a difference. [Brown]&nbsp;is phenomenal. . . . he has every tool a football player could want and adds great experience.” 
 “Malverne is loaded with smart [and]&nbsp;talented players,” Brown said. “I hope to add something to the culture with my experience winning championships.” 
 Being dropped into an already-formed team and gaining a leadership role isn’t simple. Brown is doing it with an actions-before-words approach or, as Lockwood said, “the right way – by earning it.” 
 “Josiah is exciting to watch but&nbsp;gets his place by always being humble and respectful,” Denise Brown said. 
 It didn’t hurt that he’d formed bonds with the Malverne players in youth football and maintained those relationships even when he moved to parochial school. 
 “We’d played with him when we were kids, so he fit in naturally,” Hartley said. “And there’s always been something there. We’d all go to his games. He’d come to ours.” 
 Brown doesn’t exactly call the move to Malverne a homecoming. But he has felt the Mules warm embrace and the way they have reacted to having him at practice. 
 “Playing with them feels like it did when we played coming up,” Brown said. “The vibe, the energy is still there with us. And they welcomed me back . . . [and]&nbsp;made me feel good about being here. 
 “Now we’re all looking [ahead]&nbsp;for a championship season.”

In an era where the spread offense has challenged defenses and created more scoring opportunities down the field,&nbsp;running the ball is becoming a lost art. 
 Still, the effectiveness of the running game can be the main ingredient to winning championships. A talented halfback behind a strong offensive line can help control the tempo of a game, keep the opposing high-scoring offense off the field through clock management and&nbsp;in bad weather conditions become the ultimate backup plan to win. 
 Here are 10 halfbacks on Long Island who can take over a game and dominate on the ground. They can also complement a vibrant passing game and keep the defense off balance. In alphabetical order: 
 DANNY AIELLO 
 Bayport-Blue Point, senior 
 The Phantoms marched to an undefeated record and a Long Island&nbsp;Class IV title led by Hansen Award winning quarterback Brady Clark. The Phantoms could not have done it without the bruising running of Aiello, who rushed for 1,184 yards and 13 scores. 
 AIDAN CALVACCA 
 Seaford, senior 
 The Vikings like to play ball control. They master clock management and always put a solid line in front of a talented runner. That guy&nbsp;last season was Calvacca,&nbsp; with 1,275 yards rushing and 10 scores. 
 MICHAEL GIUGLIANO 
 Miller Place, senior 
 The Panthers used the speedy Giugliano in all phases of the offense — including at quarterback —just to get him in open space as a junior. He had 1,181 all-purpose yards. This season, the offense will roll with him at halfback. &nbsp; 
 JAKE MARTINI 
 Wantagh, senior 
 He’s big, physical and likes to run folks over. The 6-2, 215-pounder is scary in the open field. He scored 15 touchdowns last season. 
 DWAYNE MEADORS 
 Hempstead, senior 
 There were signs that last year he’d have a breakout year as the Tigers continued to climb toward a playoff spot in Nassau Conference I. At 6-3, 215 pounds, he had five 100-yard rushing games, including 176 yards against Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK. 
 KYLE MESSINA 
 Sayville, junior 
 If you want yards after contact,&nbsp;Messina is your guy. He’s very tough to tackle in the open field, and at 6-0, 185 pounds, he squares up defenders and runs them over. The Newsday All-Long Island selection rushed for 2,003 yards and 30 TD’s for the Long island&nbsp;Class III champions. 
 SAL POSILLICO 
 Farmingdale, senior 
 He was an integral part of a Farmingdale offense that rolled to the Long Island&nbsp;Class I title. He averaged an amazing 9.9 yards per carry and totaled 735 yards on 77 rushes with six scores. 
 JAMEER REEDER 
 Holy Trinity, senior 
 You want a workhorse on offense?&nbsp;Reeder is your man. The 5-10, 185-pounder rushed 122 times for 772 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also takes care of the ball – he had no fumbles. 
 WILL TOLLIVER 
 Carey, senior 
 He rushed for more than 1,130 yards and scored 13 TDs as a junior in Nassau Conference II. He moves up in class and the 5-9, 170-pound back will continue to run all over defenses for the Seahawks. 
 TYLER VILLALTA 
 Massapequa, junior 
 Just give him the ball. He had 1,066 all-purpose yards and 16 TDs as a sophomore, and the 5-11, 170-pounder will do more of the same in 2023. He knows how to find the end zone.

1. GARDEN CITY 
 The Trojans are the two-time defending champions in Long Island’s Class II. They are currently enjoying Long Island’s longest winning streak at 30 games and counting. 
 2. FARMINGDALE 
 The Dalers are the defending Long Island Class I champion. They lost 22 seniors to graduation but reload behind halfback Sal Posillico. 
 3. SAYVILLE 
 The Golden Flashes earned the Long Island Class III title with an offense led by junior halfback Kyle Messina and senior quarterback Jake Tripptree. They’re back to add to a 12-game win streak and defend the crown. 
 4. FLOYD 
 The Colonials have won 13 Division I playoff titles since 2001. A stingy defense and powerful running game give them hope for number 14. 
 5. ST. ANTHONY’S 
 The defending CHSFL AAA state champion is loaded again with a massive line led by blue-chip prospect Preston Carey, Billy Dowling and Matt McGregor. Rutgers commit Korey Duff Jr. is one of Long Island’s top offensive threats at wide receiver. 
 6. MASSAPEQUA 
 Massapequa won the LI Class I crown in 2021 and lost in the Nassau Conference I final last year. They expect to play for both titles this year. 
 7. SACHEM NORTH 
 Sachem North has&nbsp;not won a county title since 2013. They have more than enough experience and talent to win it this season. 
 8. WEST ISLIP 
 The Lions are the top seed in Division II and bring back a bevy of talent. Two-year captain Chris Piropato will lead the way. 
 9. SOUTH SIDE 
 The Cyclones are the second seed in Nassau Conference III. They are poised to unseat Plainedge, the 4-time defending Nassau III champion. 
 10. EAST ISLIP 
 They have reached the playoffs for 18 consecutive years, winning four Suffolk titles and an LIC (2007). Sebastian Regis is an outstanding two-way lineman. 
 11. CHAMINADE 
 Talented halfback Jack Tully leads the way for the Flyers in the highly competitive CHSFL’s Class AAA.

 Coach: Buddy Krumenacker, 31st year 
 Five key players: Sal Posillico, RB/LB, Sr.; Daniel Canales, OL/DL, SR.; Adryan Jimenez, RB/LB, Sr.; Gianni Pangallo, OL/DL, Sr; J.J. Collins, WR/DB. Jr. 
 The Dalers: Farmingdale won its first Long Island championship since 2001 last season, claiming the Class I title. The Dalers graduated 22 seniors from that team but return Posillico, who rushed for 735 yards and six touchdowns, averaging 9.9 yards per carry last season . 
 2. Massapequa (8-3) 
 Coach: Kevin Shippos, 13th year 
 Five key players: Jason Kovaluskie, OL/DL, Sr.; Tyler Villalta, ATH/DB, Jr.; Paul Dulanto, QB, Sr.; Robby Nugent, WR/DE, Sr.; Ryan Wieczorek, FB/LB, Sr. 
 Massapequa: Massapequa returns the majority of last season’s starters that reached the Nassau Conference I final. Dulanto begins his second year as the starting quarterback after throwing for 1,432 yards and 19 touchdowns and rushing for 432 yards and three scores last season. He’ll be surrounded by a strong playmaking group, led by Villalta. 
 3. Freeport (4-5) 
 Coach: Russ Cellan, 38th year 
 Five key players: D’Angelo Gordon, QB/S/LB, Sr.; Jonathan Meza, OL/DL, Sr.; Jayden Gordon, WR/DB, Jr.; Christian Greene, OL/DL, Sr.; Juan Ramos, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Red Devils: Gordon is one of the most athletic quarterbacks on Long Island. He begins his third full season as the starting quarterback and fourth year as a starting defensive back. Gordon threw for 1,061 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 910 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, and is helped by an experienced offense line, featuring Meza, Greene, Ramos and Dan Cruz. 
 4. Baldwin (7-3) 
 Coach: Ernie Blount, first year 
 Five key players: Vaughdrea Johnson, QB/DB, Jr.; Roosevelt Espert, WR/DB, Sr.; Jake Davidson, OL/LB, Sr.; Wilter Fils-Aime, OL/LB, Sr.; Anthony Mendoza, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Bruins: Johnson returns for his second season as the starting quarterback after emerging as one of the most dangerous signal callers in the county with his legs last season. He rushed for 141 yards against Syosset and 107 yards in a playoff victory over Freeport last season. 
 5. Syosset (5-5) 
 Coach: Paul Rorke, 30th year 
 Five key players: Mustafa Mozawalla, QB, Sr.; Jake Cohen, OL/LB, Jr.; Nicholas DiBacco, OL/DL, Jr.; Sean Dillon, OL/DL, Jr.; Conrad Zheng, OL/DL, Soph. 
 Syosset: Syosset is led by one of the best quarterbacks on Long Island in Mozawalla, who won the second annual National Football Foundation Quarterback Challenge on July 23. His strong arm separates him from other top signal callers, and the young Syosset offense line hopes to form chemistry early in the season. 
 6. Hempstead (6-3) 
 Coach: Matt Ali, second year 
 Five key players: Dwayne Meadors, RB/LB, Sr.; Chris Lake, RB/LB, Sr.; Adrian Beltre, OL/DL, Sr.; Ziyair Jones, Ath, Sr.; Brandon Davis, Ath., Sr. 
 The Tigers: After a 6-2 regular season, Hempstead was upset in the first round of the playoffs by Syosset last season. Meadors and Lake form a strong duo in the backfield and at linebacker. 
 7. Oceanside (4-5) 
 Coach: Rob Blount, 15th year 
 Five key players: Shane Harmon, QB, Soph.; Brian Kraemer, WR/DB, Sr.; Andrew Dato, RB/DB, Jr.; Dylan Kakareko, OL/DL, Jr.; Brett Moshkovich, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Sailors: They have one of the youngest squads in recent memory, but receive a boost from Nick Paris, who transferred from Hewlett. The 6-1 receiver will be a top option for Harmon, who takes over as the starting quarterback. 
 8. Port Washington (3-6) 
 Coach: Kevin Cloghessy, sixth year 
 Five key players: Harry Behan, QB/DB, Jr.; Bryson Bodner, OL/DL, Sr.; Anthony Iuorio, WR/DB, Sr.; Haiden Nadboy, FB/LB, Jr.; Andrew Neuwirth, FB/LB, Sr. 
 The Vikings: Cloghessy said the team has some of its best depth in recent years and that could be key for a team looking to return to the playoffs. Behan takes over as the full-time quarterback and his 6-3 size plays to his advantage. 
 9. Uniondale (4-4) 
 Coach: Philip Coppola, 10th year 
 Five key players: Luis Lizama, OG/LB, Sr.; Tristan Greenwood, WR/DB, Sr.; Jaden Acosta WR/DB, Sr.; Shawan Bradshaw, RB/LB, Sr.; Micheley Aurelien, RB/LB, Sr. 
 The Knights: Uniondale returns eight starters on a defense that significantly improved as last season went on. The Knights allowed 15 total points in their final two games and won four of their final five games. They hope to carry that success into the 2023 season. 
 10. East Meadow (4-4) 
 Coach: Vinny Mascia, 21st year 
 Five key players: Joseph Arbitello, OG/DE, Sr.; Matt Rodriguez, FB/LB, Sr.; Nick Longardino, TE/LB, Sr.; Kevin Canto, QB/FS/ Sr.; Antonio Montford, OT/DE, Sr. 
 The Jets: Arbitello, a four-year starter, sets the tone at the line of scrimmage for East Meadow. He had 32 tackles, including eight for a loss, last season. 
 11. Valley Stream Central (3-5) 
 Coach: Tom Schiavo, second year 
 Five key players: Kyle McCord, QB/LB, Sr.; Charlie Rivera, OL/DL, Sr.; Ezechiel Moise, OL/DL, Sr.; Ife Ahmed, RB/LB, Sr.; Jordan Jean Joseph, WR/DB, Sr. 
 The Eagles: They will get a huge boost from McCord, who missed last season with an injury. River and Moise started every game on the offensive and defensive lines last season and provide experience and stability. 
 12. Westbury (1-7) 
 Coach: Savalis Charles, 11th year 
 Five key players: Thomas Fletcher, RB/LB, Sr.; Jacques Camille, OL/DL, Sr.; David Monfort, RB/LB, Jr.; Donnell Lauriston, WR/DB, Sr.; Jose Gilbert, RB/DL, Sr. 
 The Green Dragons: Fletcher and Monfort form a strong duo in the backfield and at linebacker for a team hopeful to pull off a few upsets &nbsp;this season. 
 13. Hicksville (1-7) 
 Coach: Ron Modik, third year 
 Five key players: Frank Barravechia, QB/RB/LB, Sr.; Jayden Jagmohan, OL/DL, Sr.; Anthony Valentino, OL/DL, Sr.; Jalen McFarland, RB/LB, Sr.; Aidan Masterson, WR/DB, Sr. 
 The Comets: Barravechia led the team in tackles last season as well as being the focal point on offense. &nbsp;Jagmohan, at 6-4 and&nbsp;315 pounds, and Valentino, at 6-0&nbsp;and 230pounds, are imposing forces on the line. 
 14. Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK (2-6) 
 Coach: Brian Gurney, second year 
 Five key players: Joe Kim, OL/DL, Jr.; Gavin Weisberg, OL/DL, Jr.; Shakoor Khairzada, FB/LB, Sr.. Justin Forman, WR/DB, Jr.; Vir Patel, WR/DB, Soph. 
 The Hawks: They won two of their final three games last season and hope to carry that success into the 2023 campaign. Kim and Weisberg will set the tone at the line of scrimmage for a young team with a lot of sophomores and juniors.&nbsp;

As incredible as last year was for the Farmingdale football team, it was just that:&nbsp;last year. 
 It’s a distant memory for the returning players from last year’s 12-0 Long Island Class I championship team. They are ready for what’s next. 
 “We really forget about what happened last year and we’re moving forward, keeping our heads down and grinding,” said Sal Posillico, a senior running back and linebacker. “We want to move past what happened last year. We’re very happy about what happened last year, but now it’s time for a new year, new team, new guys.” 
 Farmingdale graduated 22 seniors from its first Long Island championship team since 2001, including four of five starting offensive linemen. Daniel Canales is the lone returning starter on the line, but Farmingdale has a history of retooling on a yearly basis. 
 “The guys we have coming up have been very successful on the [junior varsity]&nbsp;and they just expect that these things are going to happen,” said Buddy Krumenacker as he begins&nbsp;his 31st year as the Farmingdale head coach. “But it’s something where you come and work and hopefully you get there. It’s an annual expectation.” 
 The path to another county and Long Island championship won’t be easy for Farmingdale in a competitive conference that includes Massapequa and Freeport. Posillico rushed for 735 yards (9.9 yards per carry) and six touchdowns last season, as well as being an impact linebacker with 52 tackles and two interceptions. The Dalers will rely on his leadership, which he’s experienced early in camp. 
 “I’m trying to lead the team by example and with my voice,” Posillico said. “People just follow me and use me as an example. We take a lot of pride in what we do at Farmingdale.” 
 The Dalers hope that translates to their fourth Nassau championship since 2012 and the chance to win their first back-to-back Long Island championships in program history. 
 “It would mean a lot to do it back-to-back,” Posillico said, “and to show that our new group of guys is just as talented as last year’s group of guys.”&nbsp;

Can Farmingdale repeat in Nassau Conference I?

MUST-SEE GAMES 
 Oct. 6, Freeport at Massapequa, Berner Middle School, 6 p.m.: This is one of the most anticipated games and this year is no exception. It will have one of the best quarterback matchups with D’Angelo Gordon (Freeport) against Paul Dulanto (Massapequa). It’s the perfect matchup to be played under the lights. 
 Oct. 20, Oceanside at&nbsp; Syosset, 6:30 p.m.:&nbsp;This could be a pivotal game for playoff seeding. Mustafa Mozawalla will get to showcase his strong arm against the young but talented, Sailors. 
 Oct. 21, Massapequa at Farmingdale, 2 p.m.:&nbsp;The fact that it’s a rematch of last season’s Nassau I final adds another element to the schools separated by five miles. 
 Oct. 28, Baldwin at Freeport, 2 p.m.:&nbsp;This is one of the longest running high school football rivalries on Long Island, dating back more than 100 years. 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 Dr. Michael Masciello was a standout quarterback at Hicksville before playing tight end at West Point. Masciello played 22 games from 1968-1970 for Army and graduated in 1971. He is now one of the top heart doctors on LI. 
 GOOD VENUE

 4. LONGWOOD (8-3)

 The Lions: Longwood is young and inexperienced but talented. More than half of the starters will be underclassmen. Corbett, Nwanyanwu, Mack, and senior Vinny Rosario (fullback) lead a deep and talented backfield. Junior Ryan Morrissey returns to play both&nbsp;lines. 
 5. LINDENHURST (7-3) 
 Coach: Nick Lombardo, 14th year

Lindenhurst moves back to Division I this season after playing in Division II in four of the last five years. 
 6. WHITMAN (5-4)

 The Wildcats: Whitman has qualified for the playoffs for three consecutive seasons for the first time in history. Sophomore Aiden Jorgenson (tight end/linebacker) and junior Jack David (wide receiver/defensive back) give Whitman&nbsp;a strong receiving corps. Ali is a three-year starter who anchors the lines on both sides of the ball. 
 7. CONNETQUOT (5-4) 
 Coach: Mike Konsevitch Jr., third year

 Connetquot: Connetquot returns to Division I after playing the last four seasons in Division II. Connetquot has seven returning on defense. Seniors Jayden Medina (running back/defensive back) and Victor Truglio (linebacker) each had more than 50 tackles last year. Senior Tommy Sollazzo, a center,&nbsp;anchors the offensive line. 
 8. COMMACK (4-5) 
 Coach: Joe Reggio, 10th&nbsp;year

 The Cougars: Commack graduated 25 seniors but have enough talent to make a deep playoff run. Weiss won the National Football Foundation Quarterback Challenge in the spring. He has talented receivers including senior James Roselli. Seniors Rowan DePrizio and Matt Brady will be keys on the lines 
 9. SACHEM EAST (4-5) 
 Coach: Ray Pickersgill, second year

 Sachem East: Sachem East is young and experienced and expects some growing pains. Juniors Gianni Spinelli and Joe Christie will get time in the backfield. Sophomores Ryan Lane and Jack Martinez will start on the offensive line. A playoff berth is possible and expected. 
 10. BRENTWOOD (1-7)

Two perennial playoff contenders make the move from Suffolk Division II into Division I this fall. The football teams at Lindenhurst and Connetquot will have an immediate impact in the division. 
 “We were born and raised in Division I and we know there’s tough competition,” said Connetquot coach Mike Konsevitch. “But I think we’re ready for the move. We had a really good season in 2022 and learned a lot with a very young group.” 
 The schedule maker was not kind to Connetquot. They open on the road at top-seeded Floyd on Saturday.&nbsp; 
 “Floyd is a tough place to win at any point in the season,” Konsevitch said. “The road to the title usually goes through Mastic Beach and that’s a credit to those coaches and the program. I like what we’re doing with our program, and I think we’re talented.” 
 Connetquot (5-4) returned to Division I after four seasons in Division II. The program won the Long Island Class I title in 1992 and 2008. Quarterback Nick Pepitone and seven returnees on defense have&nbsp;the staff optimistic. 
 Lindenhurst played in Division II in four of the last five years. The Bulldogs won the Long Island Class II crown in 2019 beating Garden City, 14-13. It was the last time Garden City lost a game.&nbsp;(The Trojans begin this season on a 30-game win streak.) 
 Lindenhurst was 7-3 last season and return&nbsp;a bevy of starters on both lines. The Bulldogs will play at Connetquot in Week 3. 
 Ward Melville (8-4) is the defending champion, winning its&nbsp;first Suffolk title in 35 years by upsetting Floyd, 14-7, in a semifinal and going on to a 34-19 win over Longwood in the title game. 
 Floyd (9-1), who played in six straight division finals before losing to Ward Melville last season, won a crown in the shortened spring season of 2021, with a&nbsp;28-21 overtime win over Whitman.

 Sept. 13, Ward Melville at Floyd, 4 p.m.: Since 1996, Floyd is 19-2 against Ward Melville. One of the two Patriots wins was in last year’s Division I semifinals over previously unbeaten Floyd. 
 Sept. 29, Ward Melville at Sachem North, 6 p.m.:&nbsp;This game pits the preseason No. 3 seed at the No. 2. seed. Ward Melville has won the last three meetings. 
 Oct. 6, Floyd at Longwood, 6 p.m.:&nbsp;Dubbed the Parkway Bowl because six miles of the William Floyd Parkway separates the two schools, Floyd leads the all-time series, 39-18-2. 
 Oct. 14, Sachem North at Floyd, 12 p.m.:&nbsp;These are the preseason top two seeds in the division. Floyd has won the last six meetings. 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 Isaiah White played at Longwood from 2012-14. He won Newsday’s Hansen Award as the most outstanding player in Suffolk in 2014. That season White rushed for 1,949 yards and scored 28 touchdowns. As a linebacker he had 66 tackles, four interceptions, and two sacks. White played college football at Stony Brook. White is now a teacher assistant at Longwood Middle School and is in his third year as the junior varsity coach at Shoreham-Wading River. 
 GOOD VENUE 
 Mike McKillop Field at Riverhead has been the home of the Blue Waves for over 120 years. The venue was once the grounds where the Suffolk County Fair was held. A horse track used to surround the playing field. . Baseball legends Babe Ruth (1923) and Satchel Paige (1950) played exhibition baseball games there. 
 THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT 
 The Commack High School Marching Band and Cougarette Kickline have been performing for more than a half-century. They delight the crowds at the home football game, festivals, and parades.&nbsp; 
 WHAT A CHARACTER 
 Lindenhurst has a bulldog as its mascot. He walks the sidelines and exhorts the home crowd to cheer loudly for their Dawgs. The bulldog’s enthusiasm and demeanor revs up the home stands at Lindy’s games. 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Robin Rosa has coached football for 36 seasons, the last 14 at Whitman. He led the 2021 team to the school’s first county title since 1984. A 1978 graduate of Centereach, he was an All-Suffolk selection as a HB.&nbsp;

Carey rejoins Nassau Conference II with some big expectations. 
 The Seahawks are the second seed after spending 2022 in Conference III and losing in the semifinals to Plainedge. They believe that loss isn’t a reflection of their talent. 
 “We had to have some backups step up at the last minute due to injury and they just weren’t prepared to fill such a big gap,” Will Tolliver said. “Everyone’s really stepping up this year and we feel we have multiple guys that can come in and perform just as well if a starter goes down.” 
 Tolliver will be a key part of Carey’s attempt at success this year. The running back had 13 touchdowns last season, including a four-score, 161-yard effort against Division. 
 “Will is the most dynamic and explosive back we’ve ever had at Carey,” coach Mike Stanley said. “He’s fast and runs very strong; now this year he’s gotten even stronger.” 
 The run game is certainly a focal point of Carey’s attack. In that same game against Division, TJ Wakely rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on five carries. Wakely caught three touchdowns last season and had 236 yards receiving, showcasing his ability in both roles. 
 Ben Rose is another weapon for Carey. He rushed for 322 yards and three touchdowns last season. 
 “TJ is just as good of a runner as a receiver. He’s a big weapon for us,” Stanley said. “Ben has gotten better in the weight room, he’s a strong runner and an excellent linebacker. We’re relying on him to do big things.” 
 Not much has changed in Carey’s year away from Nassau II. Garden City was undefeated in 2021 and again was undefeated in 2022 (it also was unbeaten in the shortened 2020 season). Carey knows that to accomplish its goals, it will have to do something no team has been able to do the past three seasons. 
 “Obviously you want to take things one week at a time, but we’ll all be ready for that challenge,” Tolliver said. “Everyone in the conference knows that it runs through Garden City, but we’re confident and excited to test ourselves.”

 Sept. 23, Manhasset at Elmont, 2 p.m.: Manhasset comes into Conference II as the fifth seed&nbsp;and this matchup against No. 4 &nbsp;Elmont could have big implications on hosting a first-round playoff game. &nbsp; 
 Sept. 30, Carey at Garden City, 2 p.m.: Carey heads back up to Nassau II with some big goals as the second seed. Garden City has won 30 consecutive games and is looking for an eighth straight county title. 
 Oct. 28, Garden City at Mepham, 2 p.m.: A rematch of the conference final, which Garden City won, 38-7. Mepham has made great strides over the past two seasons. Could this be the year they make it over the hump? 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 <a href="https://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/greg-senat-elmont-xf7h8ffv">Greg Senat</a> was a basketball player for Elmont and played tight end on the JV football team. He attended Wagner College for four years where he continued to play basketball and played football for his final two years. He was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round in 2018. He most recently appeared on the Jets preseason roster&nbsp;before being cut on August 28. 
 GOOD VENUE 
 It would be hard to find a better backdrop in Nassau County for a football game than at Long Beach. The Marines play at Long Beach Middle School with a picturesque view of the ocean just beyond the field. &nbsp; 
 GREAT MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT 
 At MacArthur, you may have the pleasure of seeing the traditional cheer team, which earned a state championship in 2022. The JV and game day squads could also make appearances, each of which competed in the National High School Cheerleading Championship in 2023. &nbsp; 
 WHAT A CHARACTER 
 Calhoun and its crowd have gotten an extra boost from Charlie the Colt as the team made the made playoffs for the first time since 2018. With Charlie horsing around on the field, a Calhoun game becomes an even better experience. &nbsp; 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Mike Stanley led the Seahawks to back-to-back Long Island Class II championships in 2013 and 2014. He graduated from Baldwin in 1995, where he wrestled and played football. He was a wide receiver at Stony Brook University.

 The Thunderbirds: They have had outstanding talent for several years. Is this this the year the T-Birds make their first appearance in a Suffolk final? Senior Elias Floroppoulos is one of a talented group of receivers that Heyman will&nbsp;throw to. Futter is an outstanding kicker. 
 3. NORTH BABYLON (5-4) 
 Coach: John Rowland, third year 
 Five key players: Joel Lomax, FB/LB, Sr.; Jake Miele, OL/DL, Sr.; Benju Registre, OL/DL, Sr.; Alex Seger, OL/DL, Sr.; Chris Stumpf, QB/LB, Sr. 
 The Bulldogs: They have a massive line, including junior Daniel Martinez. Junior Jawara Keahey will be a featured running back in the Dogs’ great tradition of ground and pound with the Wing-T offense. 
 4. BELLPORT (10-2) 
 Coach: Jamie Fabian, sixth year 
 Five key players: Caleb White, QB/LB, Sr.; Tatum Cipp, C/DL, Sr.; Trey’von Holland, OL/LB,Sr.; Jahaden Oldums, RB/LB, Sr.; Marcine Allen-Boutwell, TE/LB, Sr. 
 The Clippers: They are the two-time defending Division II champions and expect to make another run at the title. Bellport has a mix of veterans in senior WR Michael Frankie and newcomers in sophomores Braydon Cipp (QB/FS) and Nazir Turner (OL/DL). 
 5. NORTHPORT (8-3) 
 Coach: Pat Campbell, sixth year 
 Five key players: Mike Campoli, RB/DB, Sr.; Matt Lugo, TE/LB, Sr.; Calvin Blisset, WR/DE, Sr.; Giancarlo Valente, RB/LB, Sr.; Connor Hennigman, OL/DL, Jr. 
 The Tigers: They are inexperienced but talented. The lines will have to develop in a hurry in order for Northport to reach the playoffs. Junior Enrique Hernandez (quarterback), Christian Campoli (running back), and Tommy O’Brien (running back) will have significant roles in the offense. 
 6. CENTEREACH (2-6) 
 Coach: Adam Barrett, 10th year 
 Five key players: LaRawn Robinson, RB/LB, Sr.; Jason Zaita, RB/MLB, Sr.; Joseph Prokop, OT/DE, Sr.; Emanuel Martinez, RB/OLB, Sr.; Anthony Prince, RB/OLB, Sr. 
 The Cougars: They will rely heavily on Robinson to make plays on offense and defense. Junior OT/MLB Noah Preciado steps in as a two-way starter. The running game should be much improved. 
 7. HUNTINGTON (2-6) 
 Coach: Ron Wilson, first year 
 Five key players: Christian St. John, RB/LB, Sr.; David Dorilus, RB/DB, Sr.; Timmy McDonald, QB/LB, Jr.; John Genova, OL/DL, Sr.; Carmine Carusone, OT/DT, Sr. 
 The Blue Devils: They have a new coach, new outlook, and twice the amount of players from last season. Junior quarterback Timmy McDonald leads the spread offense. St. John and Dorilus will share the ball carrying duties along with junior Thomas Smith and sophomore Ethan Lawless. 
 8. NEWFIELD (3-5) 
 Coach: Nick Adler, fifth year 
 Five key players: Kenny Petit-Frere, WR/FS, Sr.; Mike Kierzkowski, OT/DT, Sr.; Chris Mastres, FB/TE/LB, Jr.; David Spooner, WR/RB/LB, Jr.; Luis Fernandez, RB/LB, Jr. 
 The Wolverines: They will rely heavily on Petit-Frere, who had over 1,000 all-purpose yards and scored eight touchdowns last season. Newfield has qualified for the playoffs in the odd years every season since 2011. 
 9. WEST BABYLON (3-5) 
 Coach: Kevin Delaney, fifth year 
 Five key players: Anthony Borawski, OL/DL, Sr.; Elijah Outlaw, QB/DB, Jr.; Nick Serrano, RB/LB, Sr.; Carmine Apuzzo, TE/LB, Sr.; Kendrick Mohan, RB/LB, Jr. 
 The Eagles: They were one away from qualifying for the playoffs last season. Veterans Borawski and Outlaw lead a powerful offense. Senior Matthew Cella (three-year starter) and four-year starter Borawski lead an experienced line. Outlaw passed for 1,186 yards and 13 scores a year ago. 
 10. DEER PARK (4-5) 
 Coach: Dan Bowker, fifth year 
 Five key players: Hayden Lovinsky, WR/CB, Sr.; Hunter Lovinsky, RB/S, Sr.; Roony Elmon, WR/LB, Sr.; Nadal Charles, OL/DL, Sr,; Chris Pittas, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Falcons: They return to Division II after three years in Division III. A third straight trip to the playoffs is in reach if the line develops and the team stays healthy. The Lovinsky brothers accounted for 21 touchdowns last season, 15 by Hayden and six by Hunter. 
 11. SMITHTOWN EAST (2-6) 
 Coach: David Bennardo, first year 
 Five key players: Jake Fields, QB, Sr.; Cormac Ryan, DE, Sr.; Charlie Tomasino, DT, Sr.; Aiden Igoglia, C, Sr.; James Tedeschi, WR/DB, Sr. 
 The Bulls: They will throw often with Fields. He has many options in Tedeschi and senior Charlie Higgins (five receiving scores last season). Ryan had 62 tackles and will lead the defense. Sophomores Cillian Ryan and Logan Arbeeny will start on both lines. 
 12. COPIAGUE (0-8) 
 Coach: Ken Rittenhouse, 15th year 
 Five key players: Jemuel Alexander, OL/DL, Sr.; Michael Mais III, WR/DB, Sr.; Santanah Singleton, OL/DL, Sr.; Fabrice Cormier, RB/LB, Jr.; Cody Tiringer, QB/DB. Jr. 
 The Eagles: They are on a 28-game losing streak but there is optimism for them to win a few games this season. Tiringer and Cormier are talented juniors in the backfield. Alexander and Cormier lead an experienced line. Sophomore Yasir Jones will have a starting&nbsp;role as a running back.

Three teams exited Suffolk Division II, arguably the most competitive division in high school football last season. 
 Lindenhurst and Connetquot moved up into Division I and Smithtown West moved down into Division III. The loss of three playoff contenders still leaves a fairly balanced division with traditionally strong programs in top-seeded West Islip, North Babylon and Bellport, the two-time defending champions. 
 &quot;We still have our core teams from the old black and blue days of Division II,” said West Islip coach Steve Mileti. “We need to be ready to rock and roll from opening day against Huntington. Five days after that opener we travel to Bellport – so it doesn’t get easier.” 
 West Islip has been in 22 Suffolk finals since 1972, winning five titles. The last crown came in the shortened season in the spring of 2021.&nbsp;The Lions won the school’s only Long Island Class II crown in 1994. 
 The Lions will be led by linebacker and two-year captain Chris Piropato and Anthony DeCristofaro, a four-year starter on the offensive line. 
 &quot;Their efforts, attitude and toughness week by week will help determine the positive expectations we expect here in West Islip,” Mileti said. “I believe the key to this team is that there are names that are not on the lists of top players that I know will have a major impact on our team.&quot; 
 Bellport defeated Northport in last year's divisional final, 35-14,&nbsp;and opens&nbsp;this season as the No. 4 seed. The Clippers have won 13 titles since 1982. The Clippers have played in 17 Suffolk finals, and won six Long Island titles in 10 appearances. 
 &quot;West Islip was young and very tough last year and earned that top seed,” said Bellport coach Jamie Fabian. “Our team is committed and ready for the challenge that Division II delivers week in and week out. The outlook is positive here as we lean on and believe in our winning tradition.” 
 Half Hollow Hills East has never reached a Suffolk final, but the program has taken major steps toward&nbsp;that end. Northport reached the final last year but hasn't won a Suffolk title since 1991.

MUST-SEE GAMES 
 Sept. 14, West Islip at Bellport, 3:30 p.m.:&nbsp;These teams have developed a not-so-friendly rivalry over the last 34 years. West Islip had won seven straight in the series before Bellport won last year, 28-10. Bellport leads the all-time series 16-15-1. 
 Sept. 29, North Babylon at West Islip, 6 p.m.:&nbsp;These neighbors first met in 1960. The Lions have dominated the series (33-17-4), including winning six of the last seven meetings. But can West Islip stop the Bulldogs’ vaunted running game? 
 Sept. 30, Bellport at Half Hollow Hills East, 1:30 p.m.:&nbsp;The road to the Division II title goes through Bellport. The Clippers are the two-time defending champs and have won all 11 games between these teams. 
 Oct. 13, Half Hollow Hills East at West Islip, 6 p.m.:&nbsp;These are the preseason top two seeds in the division. The winner could earn the top seed for the playoffs. The teams split their two games last season with Hills East winning the playoff semifinal, 9-7. 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 Elijah Riley played at Newfield from 2013-15. Riley won Newsday’s Hansen Award, given to Suffolk’s most outstanding player. In 2015, he rushed 89 times for 1,012 yards and 19 touchdowns. Riley also caught 26 passes for 715 yards and 12 touchdowns. Riley was superb on defense as a lockdown cornerback and had 66 tackles and three interceptions. After a stellar career at Army, Riley has spent the last five years in the NFL with three teams, including the Eagles, Jets&nbsp;and Steelers. 
 GOOD VENUE 
 Joe Cipp Field at Bellport is a good place to watch a game because the field sits up on a hill. The Clippers get big crowds and are very loud and proud. 
 GREAT ENTERTAINMENT 
 The Huntington marching band has won numerous awards and is considered one of the most prestigious bands in the state. The Blue Devils band has marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. They put on a terrific halftime show! 
 WHAT A CHARACTER 
 West Islip has a lion as its mascot patrolling the sideline and leading the cheers for home games. The Lion has been a staple at West Islip games for over 60 years. 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Kevin Delaney, West Babylon&nbsp;is in his fifth year as the head coach of the Eagles. Delaney, 47, is a 1994 West Babylon graduate, where he was an All-Suffolk quarterback and an All-League baseball player. Delaney has coached football for 22 seasons at various levels in three school districts, including Babylon and Deer Park. His favorite part of coaching is building relationships with his student-athletes.

 The Big Red: The entire offensive line returns this fall to protect Johnson, who compiled over 950 yards and nine total touchdowns last season.

 The Spartans: This young Spartans team looks to bounce back with a revamped 4-2-5 defensive scheme and the addition of Smith and Casoria. Naumov compiled 1,261 yards and 12 total touchdowns last fall. 
 13. BELLMORE JFK (2-6) 
 Coach: Johnny McGuire, sixth year 
 Five key players: Ray Torchia, ATH, Sr.; Brandon Goldstein, OL/DL, Sr.; Devin Pryor, RB, Sr.; Ian Estimable, OL/LB, Sr.; Charlie Gampero, RB, Sr. 
 The Cougars: The Cougars averaged 20 points per game last season in their first year running the flex-bone offense. They’ll look to build on that momentum behind Goldstein and Torchia, who amassed 1,039 all-purpose yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions last fall. 
 14. DIVISION (1-7) 
 Coach: Vincent Inciarrano, first year 
 Five key players: Cody Brush, QB, Sr.; Jason Dooley, RB/OLB, Jr.; Louis Mejias, WR/DB, Jr.; Anthony Stanco, RB/LB, Jr.; Joseph Macaluso, WR/DB, Sr. 
 The Blue Dragons: Brush has been in the Blue Dragons' system for three years and scored five touchdowns last fall. He’ll turn to a handful of young skill players to put up numbers in a spread offense this season.

Someone always seems to be open when Owen West stands in the pocket. 
 South Side’s offense is experienced, healthy and reloaded for this fall. The Cyclones bring back nine three-year starters in their return to Nassau Conference III. 
 “This is the best start to a season we’ve had,” coach Phil Onesto said. “We pretty much had the entire offense installed before the first day, and it also helps that we have nine guys who have started since their sophomore year.” 
 Among those returning starters are West, the quarterback, running back Jack Lozito and wide receiver Michael Melkonian. West said there are over 20 seniors on the team, most of whom have played together since they were in fourth grade. 
 “I feel comfortable running, I feel comfortable passing and I feel the biggest part of my growth has been my confidence in my other players,” West said. “Whether it’s four routes or two routes, it seems like someone’s always open. We have so much depth this year.” 
 That depth proved itself last season when Lozito suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 5, and Melkonian suffered a season-ending quad injury in a Week 8 loss to Elmont. 
 The Cyclones later beat Elmont in the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual Conference II champion Garden City. But bouncing back and beating Elmont in the playoffs inspired a new confidence for South Side. 
 “When I was injured last year, I was devastated. This year, there’s just a different mentality between everyone, that we’re here, it’s our last year and we all want to win,” Melkonian said. “I think we’re the best team in this conference, and I think we should win every game.” 
 West, Lozito and Melkonian combined for over 3,000 yards from scrimmage last season. They’ll be protected by three-year starting linemen Bobby Galindo, James Beatty and Billy Gryboski, among others, this fall.

Bethpage’s John Pelcher and Wantagh’s Jake Martini, two running backs <a href="https://www.newsday.com/sports/high-school/football/top-100-football-players-long-island-2023-gn8lcjsv">in Newsday's Top 100</a>, will look to establish the run game. 
 Sept. 23, Plainedge at Wantagh, 2.p.m.: Wantagh gets a chance to prove it’s a team to beat this season against the Red Devils, who handed Wantagh its only two losses last year. 
 Oct. 20, South Side at Plainedge, 6:30 p.m.: Playoff seeding figures to&nbsp; be on the line when Nassau Conference III’s perennial powerhouse hosts a confident and experienced South Side team late in the season. 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 Jerone Pettus, who graduated from Roosevelt High School in 2000 and won the Thorp Award his senior year, devotes his time to the kids. Pettus set a <a href="https://projects.newsday.com/databases/high-school/high-school-football-record-book/?where=county=Nassau&amp;offset=0">Long Island rushing record</a> at Roosevelt before playing three seasons at Wisconsin (310 yards, two TDs). After college, he coached Roosevelt’s junior varsity football team for nearly 10 years. He now teaches physical education at Alden Terrace School in the Elmont school district. 
 GOOD VENUE 
 Fans at Mineola’s red and black turf facility watched the Mustangs claim three of their seven wins at home last season. A mural of mustangs behind the visiting sideline provides fans with a warm reminder of the school’s graceful mascot. 
 SOUND OF MUSIC 
 The Division marching band won first at the New York State Field Band Conference Championships among schools in the Small School III division. The school’s cheerleading team also is one of the best on Long Island and finished second in Nassau last season among Small Varsity Division II schools. 
 WHAT A CHARACTER 
 The Floral Park’s Knight mascot is a staple for the team’s home games, which this year include&nbsp; Glen Cove, Clarke, Roosevelt and South Side. 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Rob Shaver has built the standard for Nassau Conference III football over the last 27 years. Shaver’s Red Devils teams have won the last four Nassau championships, two of the last three Long Island Championships and gone 54-4 over the last five years. 
 Shaver&nbsp;graduated from Island Trees in 1987 and started his coaching career there&nbsp; in 1992. In high school, he wrestled and&nbsp; finished second in the county at 167 pounds. He was also an All-Conference tight end.

 The Golden Flashes: The reigning Long Island Class III champs return several key players. Messina and Tripptree headline a high-scoring offensive attack that scored 33 points against Plainedge, one of the toughest defenses on the island, in the Long Island&nbsp;title game last season. They have a legitimate shot at a second straight undefeated season. 
 2. WESTHAMPTON (8-3) 
 Coach: Bryan Schaumloffel, sixth year 
 Five key players: William Gambino, QB, Sr.; Kevin Smith, WR/CB, Sr.; Jordyn Brown, DE/TE, Sr.; Andrew Mensch, OG/DT, Sr.; Brody Schaffer, RB/LB/K, Jr. 
 The Hurricanes: After graduating just four players, Westhampton will look to get back to the county title game, where it fell to Sayville last season. Gambino enters his fourth year as a starting quarterback and will be protected by an offensive line with an average weight of 260 pounds. 
 3. EAST ISLIP (5-4)

 East Islip: Regis is one of the best linemen on Long Island and will have a huge impact on both sides of the ball. Last year was a bit of a rebuilding season for the 2021 Suffolk III champs, but they will be back in the mix for another title. 
 4. SMITHTOWN WEST (5-4) 
 Coach: Craig Perrino, second year 
 Five key players: Brayden Stahl, QB, Sr.; Jack Melore, WR/FS, Sr.; Martin Schook, OL/DL, Sr.; Brian Hope, RB/LB, Sr.; Nick Zins, RB/LB, Soph. 
 The Bulls: Moving from Suffolk II, the Bulls are immediately one of the top teams in Suffolk III. Led by Stahl and Melore, the Bulls have a prolific passing attack that averaged almost 300 passing yards per game last season. 
 5. HALF HOLLOW HILLS WEST (8-2) 
 Coach: Gerald Filardi, fifth year 
 Five key players: Joseph Filardi, QB/DB, Jr.; Jesse Brooks, WR/DB, Jr.; Anthony Raio, WR/DB, Jr.; Elijah Kongolo, OL/DE, Sr.; Michael Redd, WR/DB, Sr. &nbsp; 
 The Colts: Joseph Filardi had a breakout year as a sophomore and will continue to lead a high-scoring offense. They will have to fill a handful of holes left by key players who graduated last season, but the Colts should build off of last year’s success. 
 6. HARBORFIELDS (8-2) 
 Coach: Rocco Colucci, eighth year 
 Five key players: Ethan Appolon, OL/DL, Sr.; Vinny Bolognino, RB/CB, Sr.; Michael Ferranti, RB/S, Sr.; Jack Poller, WR/CB, Sr.; Andrew White, RB/LB, Sr. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; 
 The Tornadoes: Bolognino is a great playmaker and Appolon is a force on both sides of the ball. They earned their first home playoff win since 2001 last season, but junior quarterback Jack Weiss has big shoes to fill in his first year as the starter. 
 7. KINGS PARK (7-2) 
 Coach: Mark O’Brien, 29th year 
 Five key players: Kyle Weeks, QB/FS, Sr.; John Flynn, RB/WR/CB, Sr.; Brandon Hauk, TE/ILB, Sr.; Declan O’Melia, WR/FS, Sr.; Ryan Bubeck, OT/DT, Sr. 
 The Kingsmen: They make the transition to Division III after reaching the Suffolk IV semifinals last season. Weeks and Flynn are effective runners and make for an explosive backfield. They may struggle to find gaps early on, as Bubeck is the only returning offensive lineman with experience. 
 8. COMSEWOGUE (1-7) 
 Coach: Sean Tremblay, 12th year 
 Five key players: Kaeden West, QB, Sr.; Matt Nowlan, DE/OT, Sr.; Kevin Schupp, WR/DB, Sr.; Shane Grant, RB/LB, Jr.; Lucas Shannon, TE/LB, Jr. 
 Comsewogue: Injuries plagued Comsewogue last season. West and Grant make up a rushing attack that will give defenses trouble. Comsewogue has a ton of speed on both sides of the ball. 
 9. EASPORT SOUTH-MANOR (2-6) 
 Coach: Chris Prokesch, first year 
 Five key players: Matt Pompei, OL/DL, Sr.; John Izzo, TE/LB, Sr.; Daniel O’Dell, RB/CB, Sr.; Aiden Murfit, WR/CB, Sr.; Alex Ruiz, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Sharks: Under a new head coach, they will shift from a &nbsp;triple option scheme to a spread offense. Pompei and Ruiz anchor the offensive and defensive lines for the Sharks, who have 20 seniors this season. 
 10. HAUPPAUGE (4-5) 
 Coach: Chris Diesso, first year 
 Five key players: Christian Russo, RB/WR/S, Sr.; Cole Wood, WR/CB, Jr.; Andrew Sharrer, OL/DL, Sr.; Owen Dixon, TE/LB, Sr.; Alex Posillico, C/LB, Jr. 
 The Eagles: A strong senior class graduated in the spring, leaving Hauppauge with several new faces, including the head coach. They have solid playmakers in Russo, Wood and Dixon, but inexperience is a concern. 
 11. AMITYVILLE (3-5) 
 Coach: Jason Epps, third year 
 Five key players: DaJon Clinton, RB/DT, Jr.; Amari Alcindor, RB’DB, Jr.; Christian Jean Bart, OG/DE, Sr.; Jerimiah Luciano, C/MLB, Jr.; Jacob Billinger, WR/LB, Soph. 
 Amityville: After missing the playoffs by one game last season, Amityville returns nine starters as it attempts to make the postseason. Clinton is a big, physical back who will wear defenses down. Speed is the name of the game on both sides of the ball. 
 12. ROCKY POINT (4-4) 
 Coach: Anthony DiLorenzo, 13th year 
 Five key players: AJ Aschettino, QB/RB/DB, Sr.; Ryan Meyers, RB/LB, Sr.; Jeremy Graham, QB/DB, Sr.; Dylan Colon, OL/DL, Jr.; Brennan Protosow, TE/DL, Soph. 
 The Eagles: Meyers, who had 70 tackles last season,&nbsp;leads the defense.&nbsp;Aschettino and Graham will shoulder the load in a run-heavy offense. A lack of depth and experience could hold the Eagles back. 
 13. EAST HAMPTON (2-6) 
 Coach: Joe McKee, ninth year 
 Five key players: Charlie Corwin, QB/LB, Sr.; Eddie Cobb, RB/LB, Sr.; Nick Ward, OL/DL, Sr.; Jason Lester, WR/DB, Sr.; Will McGuire, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Bonackers: Corwin can make plays with his arm and legs and will be the focal point of the offense. They lost several key players, but they sport an improved offensive line, which has been a weakness in recent years.

Smithtown West’s Air Raid offense landed in Suffolk Division III this season, where it will fit right in among some of the top scoring offenses on Long Island. 
 Led by the senior duo of quarterback Brayden Stahl and receiver Jack Melore, the Bulls are looking to improve on last season&nbsp;when they went 5-4 and averaged 29.9 points per game in Division II. Stahl threw for 2,663 yards and 29 touchdowns, and Melore caught 69 passes for 1,230 yards and 12 scores. 
 “Those stats are great, but we can make them better if we’re playing 12 games and making it to the LIC,” Stahl said. “Especially in my senior season, I’d like to give myself the opportunity to play as much high school football as I can.” 
 The Bulls&nbsp; allowed 43.3 points in their four losses last season. A lack of size up front was a problem then, but Martin Schook, a 6-foot, 250-pound lineman, figures to make the Bulls better equipped in the trenches this season. 
 “We’re a lot bigger and stronger this year,” head coach Craig Perrino said. “If we’re going to be successful defensively, we’re going to have to stop the run. Hopefully, the time these guys have spent in the weight room is going to help in that aspect.” 
 Throughout the summer, Smithtown West has kept its&nbsp; focus on a Week 1 matchup at Comsewogue, but it’s hard not to think about what will happen when the Bulls’ high-powered offense meets with the likes of Sayville, Westhampton and Half Hollow Hills West later in the season. 
 “When the schedule first came out, those were the games that jumped out the most,” Stahl said. “It’ll be cool to go toe-to-toe with some of the best quarterbacks and best offenses on Long Island and give everyone a show.”

MUST-SEE GAMES 
 Sept. 8, East Islip at Half Hollow Hills West, 3 p.m.: Hills West opened last season with a shocking 47-31 upset over the 2021 Suffolk III champs. East Islip has a more experienced team this year and will have revenge on its mind in Week 2. 
 Sept. 13, Sayville at Smithtown West, 6 p.m.: If you like high-scoring games, this matchup is perfect for you. Brayden Stahl and Jake Tripptree each threw for more than 2,000 yards last year in offenses that regularly put up 30 points with ease. Stahl and Smithtown West have the firepower to keep up with Sayville, but can they slow Tripptree and Kyle Messina down? 
 Oct. 14, Westhampton at Sayville, 2 p.m.: The rematch of last year’s division&nbsp;title game should be much more competitive than Sayville’s 28-3 win at Stony Brook University. The Hurricanes have a strong senior class and one of the deepest rosters in the division. 
 Oct. 27, Half Hollow Hills West at Westhampton, 6 p.m.: When these teams met last October, Joseph Filardi threw six touchdown passes in a 45-33 Hills West win. Another matchup between these two heavyweights under the Friday night lights, what’s not to like? 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 Dylan Laube was a three-time Newsday All-Long Island selection at running back for Westhampton between 2015-17. He was a co-winner of the Hansen Award in 2017&nbsp;when he rushed for 2,680 yards and a Long Island-record 47 touchdowns. Laube is entering his senior season at New Hampshire, where he majors in kinesiology. He rushed for 1,205 yards and 15 touchdowns last year. 
 GOOD VENUE 
 Sayville plays some Friday night games at Depot Street Field, the school’s original field from the 1920s. Sayville has used Depot Street Field since lights and a new turf field were installed several years ago. 
 GREAT ENTERTAINMENT 
 Westhampton has a DJ that plays all kinds of music to pump up the crowd throughout the game. The students come up with a theme for every game and pack the stands in colors or costumes that fit the theme. 
 WHAT A CHARACTER 
 The Eagle patrols Rocky Point’s sidelines, hyping the crowd up throughout the game. 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Bryan Schaumloffel has been coaching football for 29 years and is entering his sixth year as head coach at Westhampton. He graduated from Wantagh in 1991 and was an All-Nassau selection as a&nbsp;senior. This summer, some of his players <a href="https://www.newsday.com/sports/columnists/tom-rock/daniel-jones-eli-manning-long-island-hamptons-vkc3i7v9">caught passes from Eli Manning and Daniel Jones</a>, and he helped organize a Media Day for Suffolk III at Hauppauge in August.

 Coach: Daniel Agovino, 22nd year 
 Five key players: Athanasios Alafogiannis, RB/DE/LB, Sr.; Isaac Bratter, OL/DL, Sr.; Garret Gates, QB/OLB, Sr.; Justin Rosen, OL/DL, Sr.; James Toner, WR/CB, Sr. 
 The Vikings: After winning their first county championship since 1975 in 2021, the Vikings won 11&nbsp;straight games en route to securing back-to-back county titles last season. They suffered their only loss to Bayport-Blue Point in the Long Island Championship. The Vikings now eye their third county title in a row and fourth overall behind dual-threat quarterback Gates, who also had 54 tackles and three sacks on defense last season. 
 2. MALVERNE (6-4) 
 Coach: Kito Lockwood, 14th year 
 Five key players: Josiah Brown, WR/DB, Sr.; Tristian Brunson, OL/DL, Sr.; Kevin Estime, OL/DL, Sr.; Michael McDougal, WR/LB, Sr.; Branden “BJ” McLaughlin, RB/DB, Sr. 
 The Mules: The addition of Brown, a Holy Trinity transfer, will only increase the speed and depth of this powerful offense, led by McDougal and McLaughlin. Brunson also returns after helping anchor an offensive line that rushed for more than 2,000 yards last season. Malverne was just shy of a county finals appearance, losing to North Shore by a field goal as time expired in the semifinals. The offensive and defensive lines are stacked this season. 
 3. SEAFORD (7-3) 
 Coach: Michael Corcoran, third year 
 Five key players: Kyle Britton, R/DB, Jr.; Aiden Calvacca, RB/LB, Sr.; Anthony Janes, OT/DE, Sr.; Devin O’Donnell, TE/LB, Sr.; Jake Quinn, TE/DE, Sr. 
 The Vikings: Seaford went on a six-game winning streak before falling to West Hempstead in the county semifinals last season. O’Donnell, who had 65 tackles and three sacks last season, along with five touchdowns as a wide receiver, will help orchestrate the defensive unit. 
 4. LOCUST VALLEY (4-4) 
 Coach: Michael Gilbert, second year 
 Five key players: Mike DiLorenzo, RB/LB, Sr.; Mike Hancock, WR/DB, Sr.; Owen Hickey, WR/DB, SR.; CJ Kelly, OL/DL, Sr.; Charlie Pisciotta, RB/LB, Sr. 
 The Falcons: Locust Valley will rely on the experience of its senior class, including the backfield duo of DiLorenzo and Pisciotta. Gilbert improved the team’s record in his first season as head coach and has his sights on being a playoff contender this season. 
 5. EAST ROCKAWAY (3-5) 
 Coach: Russell Pajer, 29th year 
 Five key players: Lucas Cortazar, RB/DB, Sr.; Anthony Buzzetta, RB/CB, Jr.; Anthony Grimaldi, RB/MLB, Jr.; Frank Passanisi, QB/LB, Sr.; Nick Ventura, OG/DE, Sr. 
 The Rocks: East Rockaway returns two of its top three running backs and welcomes a handful of former junior varsity players such as Buzzetta. Grimaldi returns to head the defense. Pajer says he’s “excited for an athletic junior class” and that the Rocks “should be very competitive on both sides of the ball.” 
 6. COLD SPRING HARBOR (2-7) 
 Coach: Jon Mendreski, eighth year 
 Five key players: Alex Bauer, RB/LB, Jr.; Sam Bruno, QB/DB, Jr.; James Howell, TE/DE, Sr.; Ryan McGloin, WR/DB, Sr.; Reagan Reilly, OL/LB, Sr. 
 The Seahawks: Despite being a young team, Cold Spring Harbor will look to improve its record from last season after key injuries hampered the team’s capabilities. Reilly, who had 43 tackles and three sacks last season, returns as the defensive leader. 
 7. ISLAND TREES (5-4) 
 Co-coaches: Richard Carroll Sr. and Ryan Vinberg, second year 
 Five key players: John Echezuria, QB/DB, Sr.; Joseph Filocamo, RB/LB, Sr.; Nicolas Filocamo, RB/LB, Sr.; Kian McCoy, RB/DB, Sr.; Matthew Norberg, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Bulldogs: The strength of &nbsp;team team lies in the offensive line. With McCoy leading the way, he will be complemented on the outside by the Filocamo twins. The Bulldogs got a taste of the playoffs last season and are ready to go on a deeper run this year. 
 8. WEST HEMPSTEAD (9-2) 
 Coach: Dom Carre, 14th year 
 Five key players: Niko Adikimenakis, RB/SS, Sr.; Jayden Bonilla, OL/DL, Jr.; Declan Cole, QB/LB, Sr.; Gavin Lee, RB/LB, Sr.; Joseph Suarez, OL/LB, Soph. 
 The Rams: West Hempstead reached the county final for the first time since 1986 last season . The linebacking corps is led by a physical threat in Bonilla and Cole’s versatility with his arm and feet bode well for a seamless infusion into the Double Wing offense. The Rams will use last season's playoff experience to prepare for this year’s postseason. 
 9. VALLEY STREAM SOUTH (3-5) 
 Coach: Joe Guastafeste, ninth year 
 Five key players: Aiden Chance, RB/DB, Sr.; Michael Hernandez, QB/DB, Sr.; Brandon Ocasio, OL/DL, Sr.; Michael Sukhu, WR/DB, Sr.; Jayshaun Woodard, WR/DB, Sr. 
 The Falcons: After improving every offensive and defensive statistic last season, Valley Stream South aims to capitalize on that growth with a handful of athletic returners. Hernandez, who completed 61 of 83 passes for 804 yards and nine touchdowns last season, will look to lead the team into the playoffs. 
 10. LAWRENCE (1-7) 
 Coach: Melik Mavruk, first year 
 Five key players: Jamar Fuller, QB/LB, Sr.; Nick Gause, OL/DL, Sr.; Bryan Guevar, RB/LB, Sr.; Bobby Hicks, OL/DL, Sr.; Josh Shivers, OT/DT, Sr. 
 The Golden Tornadoes: Mavruk is looking to “reinstall old Lawrence football traditions” with the physicality and experience of this senior heavy team. While Fuller stepped in as wide receiver last year due to team injuries, he will return as the dual-threat quarterback. Guevar, who had 78 tackles last season, the 6-3, 310-pound Hicks will make this defense a serious threat. 
 11. OYSTER BAY (1-7) 
 Coach: Andrew Caramico, second year 
 Five key players: Austin Auschentino, WB/DB, Jr.; John Barbara, QG/DE, Sr.; Joseph Gotti, FB/DE, Sr.; Joseph Henry, QB, So.; Tucker Johnson, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Baymen: Oyster Bay brings back nine starters on offense, including its entire offensive line. Caramico implemented “new philosophies” on both sides of the ball in his first season last year and will look to establish a “more balanced approach on offense.” The physicality and experience of the 6-3, 260-pound Gotti, who led the team in rushing yards (585), touchdowns (nine), and tackles (43, 14 for loss) last season, will be a key component in the quest for the playoffs. 
 12. CARLE PLACE/WHEATLEY (1-7) 
 Coach: Joseph Migliano, first year 
 Five key players: Colin Driscoll, QB/S, Jr.; Nicholas Moretta, RB/LB, Jr.; Thomas Schoch, QB/S, So.; Daniel Webber, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Frogs: The team will rely on the backfield duo of Driscoll and Moretta, with an offensive line anchored by veteran leader Webber. Migliano says the team was “extremely young last year and gained some much-needed experience” in order to “re-establish themselves as a program not to be taken lightly in Conference IV.”

Cold Spring Harbor is on a mission to bounce back. 
 After graduating a large senior class that competed for a county title in 2021, injuries within the first three games caused the Seahawks to dip to a 2-7 record last fall. 
 Three senior starters on both sides of the ball were hit with season-ending injuries, which meant the sophomore class had little choice but to see significant time in major roles as well as added pressure. 
 That didn’t discourage the team’s youngest players. Actually, it made them hungrier. 
 “It was like losing six of your best guys. It definitely impacted us,” coach Jon Mendreski said. “The kids’ attitudes and mindsets this season have been great. They’re not afraid of anybody, that’s for sure. I look at last year as a good thing for them. They’ve gained experience that will only help them this season. It’s all trending upward.” 
 Cold Spring Harbor started seven sophomores, one of whom was quarterback Sam Bruno. 
 “He has a high football IQ and is an excellent athlete,” Mendreski said. “He was the right guy to take over the quarterback position from CJ Reilly. With a big junior class, we’re expecting him to take a leadership role on that side of the ball this season.” 
 And the difference-maker in this Seahawks defense? 
 Said Mendreski: “Reagan Reilly is our biggest weapon. He has the ability to take over the game for us when he wants to.” 
 “We have a lot of returners on defense. That’s our strong point,” said Reilly, the center and middle linebacker who made 43 tackles and three sacks last season. “But I think collectively, we’re going to have to work as a team to reach our potential.” 
 As the sixth seed in Conference IV, Cold Spring Harbor will face top-seeded North Shore for its opening game on September 9. 
 Added Reilly: “We’re excited to play North Shore, but right now the focus is on us. We want to put our heads down and keep working and good things will happen.”

 Oct. 7, Malverne at North Shore, 3 p.m.: The most highly anticipated matchup of the Nassau IV regular season between the top two seeds. 
 Oct. 13, North Shore at West Hempstead, 6:30 p.m.: North Shore shut down West Hempstead’s first chance at a county title since 1986 last season and handed the Rams their only loss of the regular season. 
 Oct. 14, East Rockaway at Locust Valley, 3 p.m.:&nbsp;Fifth-seeded East Rockaway will face sixth-seeded Locust Valley in this matchup that features two high-powered offenses. 
 Oct. 20, Seaford at Malverne, 7 p.m.: When these two teams met last October, Malverne lost to Seaford 34-33 in a double-overtime thriller. With both teams bringing the strength on offense this year, you won't want to miss this rematch. 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW 
 Eddie Robinson was an All-Long Island wide receiver at Lawrence who recorded a school-record 51 catches for 1,156 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior before graduating in 2014. He also scored the game-winning touchdown in the 2014 Long Island Class III Championship against Sayville after a 30-yard interception return. Robinson received a scholarship to play football at Colgate and is currently a construction project engineer in the Boston area. 
 GOOD VENUE 
 East Rockaway couldn’t have chosen a more picturesque location to build its new artificial turf field. The field, which made its debut in 2021, features bright orange end zones and is located on the Mill River. 
 GREAT ENTERTAINMENT 
 Seaford’s cheerleading squad has won back-to-back state championships and puts on an exciting show on the sidelines during game days. 
 WHAT A CHARACTER 
 West Hempstead’s Ram is a staple at home games and loved by the roaring student section. 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Kito Lockwood has been coaching football for 24 years, but Malverne football has been in his blood since he was a youth player in the community. Lockwood graduated from Malverne in 1992, where he helped the team to an undefeated season, back-to-back conference titles and a Rutgers Cup. Lockwood is entering his 14th year as head coach of Malverne and is also the co-founder and athletic director of the Malverne Wildcats youth football program. His favorite part of coaching is “giving back to [his] community and helping mentor young men and women.”

 The Phantoms: Bayport-Blue Point is coming off a historic season, winning its first Long Island championship in program history. The squad will look a little different without Hansen Award winner Brady Clark under center. However, the Phantoms bring back a strong group led by Aiello and Spano. 
 2. MILLER PLACE (5-4) 
 Coach: Adam St. Nicholas, fifth year 
 Five key players: Michael Giugliano, RB/DB, Sr.; Logan LaMountain, TE/DE, Sr.; Adam Messaoudi, OL/DL, Sr.; Shane Kiernan, QB, So; DJ Williamson, WR/DB, Jr. 
 The Panthers: They finished last season on a five-game winning streak after starting 0-3. Kiernan will start under center in his first varsity season. 
 3. GLENN (7-3) 
 Coach: David Shanahan, 29th year 
 Five key players: KaRahn King, RB/DB, Jr.; Ben Ross, OL/DL, Sr.; Jack Smith, RB/LB, Sr.; Matt Triolo, WR/DB, Jr.; Dan Elling, OL/DL, Sr. 
 The Knights: They were a game away from claiming the county championship last season and will look to get back to the title game. Glenn boasts strong offensive and defensive units with multiple returning players.

 The Buccaneers: The offensive and defensive lines will lead the Buccaneers this season as they move from Suffolk III. Jack Rao, a sophomore,&nbsp;has moved up to the varsity team as&nbsp;the starting quarterback, along with a pair of sophomore wide receivers in Matt Trovato and Jake DeGennaro. 
 5. SHOREHAM-WADING RIVER (4-4) 
 Coach: Aden Smith, seventh year

 The Panthers: They lost five starters in the first two weeks last season , and they’re returning nine starters to this season’s squad. Winter will lead the offense and defense. 
 7. MOUNT SINAI (2-6) 
 Coach: Vin Ammirato, 26th year 
 Five key players: Zach Molomo, OL/DL, Sr.; James Millen, TE/LB, Sr.; Mark Schreiber, OL/LB, Sr.; Nicholas Carretta, RB/LB, Sr.; Dontae Spadaro, RB/DB, So. 
 The Mustangs: The linebackers are a strong suit with team-leading tackler Millen atop the list. Ammirato said the team is “very inexperienced” and will need to improve. 
 8. CENTER MORICHES (3-5) 
 Coach: Matthew Millheiser, first year 
 Five key players: Xavier Bryant, WR/DB, Sr.; Matt Albino, RB/DB, Sr.; Connor Planz, QB/FS, Sr.; Noah Reed, OL/DL, Sr.; Brayden Hromada, TE/LB, Jr. 
 The Red Devils: Millheiser joins the program after the Red Devils missed the playoffs last season. They boast a strong all-around defense. 
 9. PORT JEFFERSON (2-6) 
 Coach: Josh Shields, second year 
 Five key players: Jaden Katsaros, RB/DB, Sr.; Ryan Filippi, QB/DB, Jr.; Malachi Bourjolly, WR/LB, Sr.; Brandon Verruto, OL/DL, Jr.; Matthew Wengatz, TE/DL/LB, Jr. 
 The Royals: They’ll run a new spread offense and a new 4-4 defense under Shields. He expects the offense to be strong with Filippi under center and Katsaros in the backfield. 
 10. GREENPORT-SOUTHOLD-MATTITUCK (0-8) 
 Coach: Timothy McArdle, third year 
 Five key players: Michael DeNicola, QB/DB, Jr.; Luke Newman, WR/LB, Sr.; Thomas Mastrangelo, OL/DL, Sr.; Brady Woods, OL/DL, Jr.; Dylan Spooner, WR/LB, Sr. 
 The Porters: They were young and inexperienced, and had a new coaching staff last season , which led them to an 0-8 record. McArdle expects a more consistent output throughout this season. 
 11. WYANDANCH (0-8) 
 Coach: Dawhite Hines, first year 
 Five key players: Timothy Jules, TE/LB, Sr.; Jonah Kennerly, TE/LB, Sr.; Derrick Henry, WR/DB, Jr.; Franklin Segovia, OL/DL, Jr.; Jelani Lake, WR/DB, Jr. 
 Wyandanch: Wyandanch is back in Suffolk IV after a season of Suffolk III ball. The duo of Jules and Kennerly lead the charge under Hines. 
 12. SOUTHAMPTON 
 Coach: Franklin Trent, first year 
 Five key players: Nehemiah Mack, FB/DL, Sr.; Liam Squires, RB/LB, So., Nootimus Williams, FB/DL, Sr.; Juan Pichardo Valdespino, WR/DB, So.; Dyson Smith, OL/DL, Jr. 
 The Mariners: Varsity football is back in Southampton after a few years of junior varsity play. They’re planning to run a pro offense and a 4-3 defense.

Bayport-Blue Point is looking to defend its Suffolk Division IV title after sweeping through the competition last season. 
 This year, however, the Phantoms may not go unscathed — or even win it at all. The division has about half a dozen teams that realistically could &nbsp;win the county championship. 
 “There is a lot of parity in the league as far as talent,” Glenn coach Dave Shanahan said. “From the first seed to the sixth or seventh seed there [are] definitely all quality teams. This is one of the deeper leagues we’ve had, especially in the last two years.” 
 Glenn will be one of the top challengers&nbsp;after losing to Bayport-Blue Point in last year's final. 
 “It was never easy losing the big game like that,” Shanahan said. “But I think it provides motivation. The kids see how close they were, especially when you had a lot of underclassmen. They want to return there, and they realize they’re capable of returning there.” 
 Adam St. Nicholas has been on Miller Place’s coaching staff since 2011, helping the Panthers become a top team in Division III. The Panthers then transitioned to Division IV to claim the 2017 county championship. 
 But the team seemed to slow down. 
 “[In]&nbsp;2018-19, we hit a little lull with our program,” St. Nicholas said. “We just didn’t have the players to really compete there. We built it back up, and I think that we’re kind of getting back to that 2013-14-15 era.” 
 The Panthers finished 5-4 last season, falling to Bayport-Blue Point in the semifinals. Shane Kiernan, a sophomore, will start at quarterback in his first varsity season. Between Michael Giugliano, Logan LaMountain and DJ Williamson, Kiernan will have plenty of options to work with. 
 “This is probably the strongest team I’ve had at Miller Place since I’ve been the head coach,” St. Nicholas said. “I’m going into my fifth year. … We’re really big up front, and we also have a young quarterback who’s really good as well. I think our wide receiver group might be the best in the division.”

MUST-SEE GAMES 
 Sept. 8, Islip at Babylon, 6 p.m.:&nbsp;Babylon, a traditional powerhouse, has struggled the past few years, while Islip wants to show it's a team to be reckoned in its new division. This game sets the tone for their seasons. 
 Sept. 29, Glenn at Bayport-Blue Point, 6:30 p.m.:&nbsp;The Phantoms defeated the Knights, 35-6, in the Suffolk Division IV championship to earn its third county title in school history. Bayport-Blue Point’s Danny Aiello and Glenn’s KaRahn King return for their senior and junior seasons, respectively. 
 Oct. 14, Miller Place at Bayport-Blue Point, 1 p.m.:&nbsp;The rematch of last year’s semifinals could be the difference in playoff seeding this year. 
 Oct. 27, Shoreham-Wading River at Miller Place, 6 p.m.:&nbsp;They split their season series with Miller Place taking the second, 35-28. Shoreham-Wading River won the first game 23-20. 
 GOOD VENUE 
 The climb to get to Port Jefferson’s field is well worth the effort. Surrounded by trees, the Royals play on top of a hill in a pretty scene. 
 GREAT ENTERTAINMENT 
 Don’t leave your seats during halftime at Miller Place, you’ll want to see their talented cheerleading squad. 
 WHAT A CHARACTER 
 Be on alert for Babylon’s Panther on the team’s sideline during games. The cat is black to match the team’s uniforms. 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 Randall Exantus of Glenn helped lead the Knights to a berth in the Suffolk IV championship game in 2007. He went on to play football at Albany, becoming a captain in his senior season. He was the safeties and cornerbacks coach at Central Connecticut State University and now coaches youth football at Trail’s End Camp. 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Dave Shanahan has found joy in making a difference&nbsp;in his players’ lives. It’s beyond football as he strives for the kids to push themselves and build character. He’s entering his 29th year coaching at Glenn, holding a 169-91-2 record and Long Island championships in 2010 and 2011.

<h3> CHAMINADE (5-5) </h3> 
 Coach: Kevin Dolan, eighth year 
 Five key players: Tyler Granito, QB, Sr.; Seamus Miller, LB, Sr.; Nick Rinaldi, C, Sr.; Jack Tully, RB, Sr.; Eamonn Welch, DE, Sr. 
 The Flyers: They have some significant experience returning at running back with Tully (1,088 all-purpose yards) and on the line (led by the 6-2, 290-pound Rinaldi). They also have high hopes for Granito and a solid receiving corps, plus a weapon in senior kicker Tim Tomlinson. Chaminade, which fell in the AAA semifinals to St. Anthony’s and is seeded fourth this year, is led defensively by Miller (70 tackles, two INTs) at inside linebacker. 
<h3> HOLY TRINITY (9-1) </h3> 
 Coach: Chris Hardardt, interim 
 Five key players: Justin Costa, OL/DL, Sr.; Hopeton James, DE, Sr; Rocco Rainone, QB, Sr.; Jameer Reeder, RB/LB, Sr.; Jayden Simpson, WR, Jr. 
 The Titans: They were the AA II champs in 2021 and the AA I champs in 2022. Now the Titans have moved up to AAA and have the division’s eighth and final seed along with a <a href="https://www.newsday.com/sports/high-school/football/holy-trinity-kahmal-roy-atimewi5">new interim head coach</a>. They lost receiver/defensive back Josiah Brown, a Penn State commit who transferred to Malverne, but they have an experienced hand running the offense in Rainone (1,224 yards and 16 touchdowns&nbsp;passing), a third-year starter, and a big-play back in Reeder (772 yards and 11 TDs rushing). James was the defensive player of the game when they won the 2022 title. 
<h3> KELLENBERG (6-4) </h3> 
 Coach: Eric Meisse, second year 
 Five key players: Luke Fifield, G, Jr.; Brendan Galla, QB/WR/DB, Jr.; Isaiah Gittens, DL, Jr.; Jack Geoghan, WR/S, Jr.; Andrew Kaiser, G, Sr. 
 The Firebirds: They have a mostly inexperienced team besides the lines, including at quarterback with Devin Page now at Penn. Kellenberg, which started last season 5-0, has Fifield (6-2, 275) and Kaiser (6-0, 285) back on the offensive line and Gittens and senior Noah Foster back to try to wreak havoc on the defensive line. There are also three promising newcomers, two up from the junior varsity&nbsp;in Galla&nbsp;and Geoghan, plus 5-8 junior cornerback/receiver Christian Dacsota, a Baldwin transfer. 
<h3> ST. ANTHONY’S (11-1) </h3> 
 Coach: Joe Minucci, fifth year 
 Five key players: Preston Carey, DT, So.; Sam Cook, LB, Sr.; Billy Dowling, C, Jr., Korey Duff Jr., WR, Sr.; Alex Menghi, TE, Sr. 
 The Friars: They had a memorable 2022 season with their CHSFL AAA and Catholic AAA state titles, but the Friars, who were seeded third in the division for this season, have to replace All-Long Island quarterback&nbsp;Dante Torres. Junior Gary Merrill and sophomore Peyton Robinson were working at the spot in the preseason. There are D-I talents to catch the ball in the 6-5 Duff (committed to Rutgers) and the 6-4 Menghi (committed to Stony Brook) and a strong offensive line led by Dowling (6-2, 275). Carey (6-5, 285) is the marquee name on defense, a player already coveted by many of the country’s top college football programs. 
<h3> ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST (7-3) </h3> 
 Coach: Philip Alba, fifth season 
 Five key players: DJ Lisbon, WR, Sr.; Branden Raines, DE/Edge; Sr.; Luka Skoda, LB, Jr.; Lee Wehbeh, C, Sr.; Michael Wheat, QB/RB/S, Sr. 
 The Cougars: They own the third seed in AA I and have their toughest schedule in many years with AAA opponents Chaminade, Holy Trinity and Farrell, plus independent Long Island Lutheran. St. John the Baptist, a AA I semifinalist last season, has playmakers on offense with Wheat (863 yards passing, 422 rushing) and the 6-5 Lisbon (20.8 yards per catch). But defense is its strongest point with Raines (57 tackles, seven TFLs, five sacks), Skoda (84 tackles, three sacks, two INTs) and sophomore Central Islip transfer Jovan Bonilla at linebacker and a standout secondary featuring senior Chris King and junior Jayden Miller at cornerback and Wheat and junior Joseph Rivera at safety. 
<h3> ST. DOMINIC (2-5) </h3> 
 Coach: Gian Villante, second year 
 Five key players: Jon Bartolomei, RB/LB/S, Sr.; Dean Defalco, WR/DB, Sr.; Adam Jerome, QB/DE, Jr.; Colin Maher, OL/DL, Jr. Mike Rossiter, OL/L, Sr. 
 The Bayhawks: They will hope for improvement this season behind Jerome, their new 6-6, 245-pound quarterback. Villante cited Jerome’s Division I size, strength and ability to move. He wants to see that translate in the games, along with improved tackling from his Bayhawks. 
<h2> INDEPENDENT </h2> 
<h3> LONG ISLAND LUTHERAN (8-2) </h3> 
 Coach: Chris Reno, 20th year 
 Five key players: Jeremy Alexandre, QB, Sr.; T.J. Bacon, TE/S, Sr.; Jacob Butler, WR/S, So.; Rodney Mills, OT/DE, Sr.; &nbsp;Anthony Valdez, RB/DB, Sr. 
 The Crusaders: They have departed from the Metropolitan Independent Football League in order to play an independent schedule and become a regional program. The 6-6 Alexandre is a Christ the King transfer who threw 17 touchdowns last season. Valdez (1,182 yards rushing) and D-I recruits Bacon (40 receptions, 607 yards) and Butler (31 receptions, 642 yards) are returnees, as are four starters on a formidable offensive line. Mills, a Martone Award finalist last season for&nbsp;Baldwin is a name to watch on&nbsp;defense.

MUST-SEE GAMES 
 Sept. 22: Iona Prep at St. Anthony’s, 7 p.m.:&nbsp;This is a rematch of the AAA championship game. The Friars won, 50-18, behind quarterback Dante Torres, who has since graduated. Iona Prep was seeded first in the division for 2023 and St. Anthony’s was third. 
 Sept. 30: St. Anthony’s at Chaminade, 1:30 p.m.:&nbsp;This is a rematch of their AAA semifinal. St. Anthony’s won, 41-15. But Chaminade was seeded right behind the Friars for this season. 
 WHERE ARE THEY NOW? 
 Chris Eanuzel was a star quarterback for St. Anthony’s. Now the 2006 grad is a different kind of quarterback. The 35-year-old Dix Hills resident is the director of operations for Sundae Donuts, with Huntington, Montauk and Citi Field among its five locations. 
 &quot;I owe a lot of my success in life, to be honest, to St. Anthony’s and to my football success,&quot; Eanuzel said. &quot;It really gave me the ability to be a people person and use my social skills to my advantage.” 
 COACHING SPOTLIGHT 
 Philip Alba had a young St. John the Baptist team last season. But he guided it to a 7-3 record and a trip to the AA I semifinals, where the Cougars fell to Moore Catholic, 14-7. 
 EXTRA POINTS 
 Chaminade senior center/co-captain Nick Rinaldi feels the Flyers are improved after going 5-5 and can contend for the AAA title. “One hundred percent,” Rinaldi said. &nbsp;“Obviously, St. Anthony’s is a great team. I’m not going to take that away from them. But we’re also a great team. We’ve got the experience now, and I think we’re going to be great.” … Chaminade coach Kevin Dolan praised the 6-2, 290-pound Rinaldi’s run blocking and said that “this is my 35th year of high school football; he’s the strongest football player I’ve ever coached.”
